I was away with my son for the last week, at the national fencing competition which, this year, was held in San Jose, California. Since he was competing, we didn't get to see much of San Jose, but we did get to go out on the night of July 4th.We went to a large park near our hotel, where they had a music festival followed by fireworks. It was during the fireworks that I noticed something interes
I took a little time during my vacation to blog surf some smaller blogs that are representative of the GOP base and found that almost all of them had negative things to say about Obama however none of them had anything positive to say about McCain. Admittedly my sample was small but if it is indeed indicative of a larger trend then McCain is in trouble. It would also explain why McCain is still ru
Maybe it's just the fact that I was not raised in this country, but people are just going crazy with all these fireworks. *Please don't take that to mean I am not patriotic by an means*Canada wasn't that different and we celebrated things on July 1st, so I understand the fireworks, parades and such and actually enjoy the independance day celebrations here. What I don't get is every year I see the
Friday morning, on the way into work, I was on the escalator coming out of the Metro station, and I looked down and noticed some girl's sandals. My first thought was "Those are really cute and they look comfortable."The second thought was "Oh, they're Tevas."The third thought was "I am wearing the exact same shoes."
The story that Stanford University has lost a laptop computer has been making the rounds since Monday. I thought I’d give myself a break from these “university loses computer—tens of thousands of people affected!!!” stories; however, there are so many wonderful comments (read: opinions that are mired in the technological Middle Ages) on so many news sites, that I feel like making som

Observation by Independent Evaluators for Children in Special Education - This article will discuss whether independent evaluators are allowed to observe a child in their classroom. Many school personnel state that HIPPA and FERPA prevent the evaluators observations; this is not true. In order for the independent evaluator to complete a full evaluation on your child, a classroom observation is critical. I don't think this makes sense, but 'tis true; when I have a horrible head cold I am very, very hungry but I only want junk food.
I've noticed this before, but since I rarely get truly sick, it's not something I think about often. When I have the flu I don't want to eat or drink anything at all. When I have a cold I am very hungry, but the only things that sound good are... well, crap.

The "Singapore Flyer", the country's newest observation wheel, opened on Tuesday and is set to rival the London Eye.The Singapore Flyer stands at around 165 meters tall, and bills itself as the world's largest giant observation wheel. The London Eye is slightly lower, at around 135 meters. The Singapore Flyer boasts of around 28-capsules each capable of carrying 28 people.Officials say the wheel is completely different from the London Eye which is built on a three-dimensional structure. Passengers can expect pay 22 US dollars for a 30-minute ride on the new wheel.Source: CCTV

I've been working horribly long hours again so the canvasses are on hold :>( - but I'm mulling over ideas on where to go next with them. So, I thought I'd carry on talking about sketchbooks, this time about using them simply to record interesting things, practice hand eye coordination and mark making, trying out new materials and mixes of media - the equivalent of practising scales on the piano and improvising in jazz all jumbled up together :>DThis first one is just doodling but even so is practice at getting soft colour changes.I've shown these before, the sketches were done during teaching - the gourd is in the still life store, the jar we keep the erasers and sharpener in. Not objects of beauty - but they were in front of me on the desk and posed interesting problems with ellipses and r
something happened to me last night that has me wondering - what gives??so, what happened, you ask?there I was going home after a great night hanging out in the loooobby. I boarded this local bus going in the direction of my apartment. and as soon as I did, the bus conductor, this lady screams out loud in thai for everybody to hear quote, "THERE'S A FOREIGNER ON THE BUS!" ..when she announced this, I looked around and realized that she must have been talking about me. since I was the only one who was non-thai on the bus, who else could it be??what is going on, you ask?frankly, I don't know. but for sure, something is up. ..MY GUESS - the thai people are in the middle of some major internal discussions about issues that they don't want non-thais to be aware of.for those of you who may

In college I had to give a persuasive speech to 20 classmates for a communications course. My topic? I had to convince people there was life on other planets.

The electroweak force is a unified force that manifests as an electromagnetic force and a weak force at "standard" conditions in the universe around us. The electromagnetic force is easily measured and observed with high-school lab equipment. The weak force is a force that happens mostly inside an atomic nucleus [1]. This means it cannot be "directly" observed with the same ease one would observe an apple or the magnetic force. However, it manifests in the decay of elementary particles, such as neutrons, but also in mesons and in leptons. The decay of a wide variety of particles can be described in the framework of the weak interaction. This can be seen as evidence of the weak force, and given the vast amount of different interactions and decay times that can be used to verify the theory,
We frequently hear cited the “observer effect” in research discussions. This is the idea that you cannot observe something without changing it. Why is that? .Well, among other reasons, it just takes a discrete amount of time to observe something and turn that observation into usable information. If most folks take about 2/10 of a second to make the simplest of observation-reactions, by the time you have observed it, it has changed. .In the case of a human taking one step at a reasonable average speed of about 3 feet/sec then during the 2/10 sec that it takes just to see them moving and realize you’ve seen it, the moving center of mass has moved greater than 7 inches. If the observer is in motion too, the change could be as much as 14 inches in 2/10 of a second..This has some dramatic
Just came back from the Always On event in NY; over 600 people packed into a couple rooms on the 36th floor of a fancy hotel – I was reminded of the events and conferences during the late 90’s – lot’s of buzz, loads of optimism and discussions of the perfect storm! This time the typhoon (as Tim draper from DFJ calls it) is centered around the digital media and what it is doing with advertising models incumbent distribution channels, production time frames, schedule, etc.Lots of acquisitions, big number valuations, bigger venture investments, and all that Jazz ! just like it use to be in late 90’s. Not that I mind it.Although I do buy the argument that things have changed since the 90’s; including better business models, proven models of monetization, etc. but a typhoon is a typh
The Savage Critics feels that Gail Simone's recent work has taken a turn for the worst, and it may well have, but at the same time, it led me to thinking:

I'd never really thought of that as a way to describe them
92 Queen StreetNiagara-on-the-Lake,OntarioL0S 1J0Canadahttp://www.shawcafe.ca/Where is it?OK from the front entrance head straight to the bar area and then left to follow the bar around. You’ll find a stairwell that spirals down toward the toilets. They are right of where you come off the stairs. What’s it like?Over a year before this trip I’d passed by the Shaw Café one evening when it was closed and thought it looked like a good place to stop and have a light bite to eat. The building looks inviting and has tables by the windows so you can look out at the passers by. There is also a restaurant on the upper floor. In fact you’d have to say the stairwell is the most impressive thing about the place. On the October night a year before I’d not noticed its name or the statue outside. My father had a picture of (George) Bernard Shaw hanging in our house all the time I was a kid so it was instantaneously recognisable. But what would GBS think about being made a tourist attraction?
I was bored today and I went looking for some Pete Prisco stupidity over at CBS, and wouldn't you know it, he came through again. He was asked if the Packers could win a Super Bowl while their rushing game is last in the league and his answer was odd to say the least... Yes. There's an old adage that you have to run in December and January to win. That's not true. You have to be able to throw to score and run to win. By that, I mean throw it early and get a lead and then run it with the lead. Pete Prisco, telling us that you have to be a pass first team to win a Super Bowl. Without really researching this, I already started to disagree with him so I decided to go look at some numbers. I went back and looked at the last 10 Super Bowls and how the participating teams had faired that season in the run game. Now, I know you might think that a sample size of 20 teams and 10 games is a bit small, but I though it would be relevant for the era we're in right now.1997 : Broncos over PackersTh

A lecturer teaching medicine was tutoring a class on 'Observation'.He took out a jar of yellow-coloured liquid. "This", he explained, "is urine. To be a doctor, you have to be observant to colour, smell, sight, and taste." After saying this, he dipped his finger into the jar and put it into his mouth. His class watched on in amazement, most, in disgust. But being the good students that they were, the jar was passed, and one by one, they dipped one finger into the jar and then put it into their mouth. After the last student was done, the lecturer shook his head."If any of you had been observant, you would've noticed that I put my 2nd finger into the jar and my 3rd finger into my mouth."
Not many people are aware of the UN's humanitarian work. The image of the UN is most often that of the general assembly or Security Council unable to make progress or act on various global issues.Even less are aware the UN has set explicit millennium development goals.I've stumbled upon a very interesting tool available on the UN MDG (Millennium development goals) site. It's called Gapminder and it clearly visualizes the MDG over time, geography and income levels for each primary and secondary goals. It is a most important tool to learn of the world we are living in. For Gapminder follow this link. The UN's millennium development goals are:1. Eradicate extreme poverty and hungera. Reduce by half the proportion of people living on less than a dollar a dayb. Reduce by half the proportion of people who suffer from hunger2. Achieve universal primary education - Ensure that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling3. Promote gender equality and empower women - Elimin

OK, this is really funny. As you know, I'm sitting at home by myself watching Playboy TV, since C is out of town. Well actually I'd be doing the same thing if she was here, but I'd be interrupted by her scolding the cats for scratching the new couch. Anyway, I'm watching their usual explicit 11PM movie, which tonight is called "Shoot All Over Me Club." It takes place in the 1950s, so the women are dressed accordingly, and have the appropriate hairdos, etc. Now that part is very sexy, but get this...the women all have pasted on fake pubic hair. I kid you not. When I saw it in one of the scenes, I just dismissed the whole idea, but then later I saw it again. It was just a big patch that was stuck on, and was moving around while they rubbed it. Unbelievable. And even if it didn't move around, you could still see that it was just totally unnatural. I wonder if they figured that guys would be so stupid that they wouldn't notice, or they simply didn't care. Maybe they figure
The other day Andrew from Cape Town visited us for the first time, and dropped off some very kind and constructive comments. In a brief exchange between myself and Andrew, he dropped in this pearl from the Comrades broadcast on Sunday, which I think, more than any other, illustrates exactly the point I was making in my post on the race from Monday 18 June (check it out below)."Thinking of Sipho Ngomane, while watching the race on Sunday, they had an interviewed with him, and a comment of his peaked my interest, “As soon as I’m out of my contract, I’ll focus on marathons.” Listening “between the lines” I could pick up he wasn’t that keen Comrades anymore." Quote from Andrew at the Comrades blogIf this quote from an elite runner doesn't tell you what the problems with SA road running are, then nothing will. Until such time that people like Nick Bester and the drivers of the ultra-marathon machine stop exploiting the athletic talent we have, we will not compete with the

The growth in spending power, along the modernisation of the banking system and the introduction of mortgages, has resulted in massive growth in the real-estate market. However, experts say the main players in the market – property developers, banks and the authorities – are fixing prices at an artificially high level. They warn that as the rise in house prices is accelerating at a much faster rate than wages, this growth is unsustainable and the bubble could burst at any moment.......“In mid-2006, housing became inaccessible for buyers who were not prepared to take on the risk of a ten-year morta

I've been watching Medtronic call options activity (I am long in this name) and more than 13,000 June 52.5 calls have traded today vs open interest of 9,500. It was a beautiful day in Colorado. I was able to mow the lawn, do a little gardening, plant some lovely bulbs. My tulips and grape hyacinths are, as my little neighbor says, “gorgeous beyond words”.
I’ve done so many news articles, I just really wanted to slow down and tell you the REALLY interesting stuff. The Safe Pet Food Blog quite often sees 1,000 different visitors per day. Many of them leave comments or send me an email.
What do people know about the recall?
Well, it ranges from the ridiculous to the sublime.
First, at a veterinary clinic… All that is posted is the Menu Foods list. They were aware of Royal Canin, Natural Balance, and Blue Buffalo but had not updated their list and did not know of the various pet treats that had recalls unrelated to melamine. They are very traditional and do not discuss or recommend “natural” or “holistic” foods with pet parents. After all, pets have lived up to 20 years on the food

Apparently 90% of the country believes in God, according to Newsweek. That's probably the same as how many people think the sky is blue or the world is round. God-belief is widely considered an obvious thing, which is automatically put in everyone's head. It is rarely, if ever questioned, because God-belief is something people feel better just accepting as true. It is acceptable for a person to question or even doubt the existence of God. What one may see as signs of God's existence, such as nature or certain miracles, may be just seen as coincidences to others. However, even today, many who may question or even doubt God's existence may not admit to their skepticisms due to the unpopularity of agnosticism, having said that, I am far from being an agnostic. I cannot imagine what life would be like without a God to believe in, but I'm not a person of organized religion either. I think the theory that Americans believe in God ergo are religious is rather erroneous. While that may be

I hadn't noted this previously, but in Peter Sanderson's latest op-ed on Quick Stop Entertainment, he makes a good point about how Cap "ended" his career in defeat:The end of Civil War, in which Captain America decides he is wrong for fighting for the freedom of his fellow superheroes, and an already infamous Civil War: Frontline sequence in which a woman self-righteously denounces the Captain for knowing nothing about America since he doesn’t waste time on YouTube (Say what? I would think Cap keeps himself rather busy continually saving the lives of this woman and other Americans over the course of his career. This woman’s attitude smacks of ageism. This suggests that 21st century Marvel regards the original Captain as a dated character. “‘He hasn't been living in the modern world and the world does move," says Marvel Editor-in-Chief Joe Quesada.” in the CNN report. And here I think of Captain America as representing American ideals, which have endured for over two hundred

O.K.So it's been a while since my last post. In the intervening time, we took a little vacation to Las Vegas and surrounding areas (Zion and Bryce in Utah, and a quick trip into California to visit my aunt and uncle). Zion and Bryce are spectacular. Vegas is a spectacle. And California was on fire! (We saw lots of smoke from wildfires and were close enough that we actually saw a dump of fire retardant from a helicopter.) Fires notwithstanding, California was inspirational, as we passed by (through) a huge wind farm. How people can say that those windmills are an eyesore is completely beyond my comprehension. I think they're beautiful, partly because of the pure aesthetics and partly because of what they represent. While in Vegas, we renewed our vows on our third wedding anniversary with a giant Elvis as the officiant. (Perhaps I'll post a picture or two sometime.)Since then, we've had our first official house guests in the new house. Chris and Petra came to visit a week ago. They ha
A male fish can size up potential rivals, and even rank them from strongest to weakest, simply by watching how they perform in territorial fights with other males, according to a new study by Stanford University scientists. The researchers say their discovery provides the first direct evidence that fish, like people, can use logical reasoning to figure out their place in the pecking order. The study, published in the January 25 edition of the journal Nature, is based on a unique experiment with cichlids (SIK-lids), small territorial fish from Africa."In their natural habitat, male cichlids are constantly trying to ascend socially by beating each other up," said study co-author Russell D. Fernald, professor of biological sciences at Stanford. "It would be really valuable for them to know in advance who to pick a fight with."The Nature experiment was designed by lead author Logan Grosenick (2005 Recipient of The Firestone Medal for Excellence in Undergraduate Research), a graduate student

This is the third in a line of juice bulletins that I hope will change the world read the others if you haven't yet. I just want to know why don't black people watch the news. I was talking to my friend Keith (black), and my friend Matt (white) Matt mentioned the Mark Foley controversy which has been all over the news on many television networks and Keith did not know what the hell we were talking about. I'm sitting there thinking how does this dumb bitch not know about Mark Foley. If they brought slavery back next week no black person would know about it because they would be too busy watching The Steve Harvey Show.I'm just saying. This has been a Juice observation

The topic of this observation is interracial dating. Now I just want to know this one thing why do black guys pick the ugliest white girls they can find when they catch jungle fever I know us black guys can't get enough of that ass but come on be a little picky when it gets to the face.Because you're going to have her dad want to shoot you with a shotgun anyway so don't risk your life over a girl who looks like a lagoon creature. I'm watching Maury today and I'm thinking Maury is the worst thing to happen to black people since Flavor of Love. Have you seen this nigga filled talk show. There is not one respectable black person to show up on that talk show. If you notice there are niggas shouting in the audience too. It's the worse during the paternity test to see who the baby daddy is.You have two people on stage fighting and cursing acting like they were raised in a zoo.I know us black people can get emotional at times but you to learn how to restrain yourself in order to keep from being seen as ignorent. I know I might push some buttons with this but I am tired of niggas representing the black race in negative way on television because the rest of america think all black people are that way and that's not true at all. There are plenty of well spoken black people who are very intelligent but you don't see these black people nearly enough on television.Black people its not just television's fault its our o
Have any of you seen the show cheaters I think this is the funniest on television. If you don't know what it is it's a show where people who think their lover is cheating on them hire private detectives to follow their boyfriend or girlfriend around to see if their cheating.I think the funniest part of this show is the host.He pretends he cares so much about the person getting cheated on and bugs the person that's doing the cheating he even was stabbed one time because he was so annoying. Here is what I don't like about this why do black people act like they have no home training on this show. I swear it's nigga fest 2006 when black show up on this show.Come on black people have a little self respect when you're in front of a camera. This has been a juice observation
I know this is a day late but I have something to say about holloween. If you are atleast a teenager why the hell are you still trick or treating. Aren't you a little old to be out with little kids dressed as power rangers going to people's doors and asking for candy. After a little while you need to let things go. Imagine a person who would never let things go. It would be disturbing for a 30 year old man to still be sucking his momma's titty or going to daycare playing hide a go seek with little kids or shit in his pants you would look at that guy and say that's a sad man well I think it's just as sad to be trick or treating when you can drive a car a go buy candy. Nobody is stopping you from dressing up and celebrating with friends but don't take the little kid's candy. This has been a juice observation
Hello people and welcome to another juice observation.I want to talk about a problem I have been having lately and its a problem some of you other guys might be having. Why does Chris Shields attract so many ugly woman.I swear I am like Brad Pitt to these ugly woman.
