In fact, she is completely different from the regular Hollywood actors. What caught my attention was the statement she made, "So much gets held in the body; my piece is about letting go of our body trappings. Adjusting PSA Scores For Obese Men Or Cancers May Be Missed
"Obese men have more blood circulating throughout their bodies than normal weight men, and as a result, the concentration of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood -- the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer -- can become diluted," said Stephen Freedland, M.D., a Duke urologist and senior researcher on the study.* "We've known for a while that obese men tend to have lower PSA scores than normal weight men, but our study really proposes a reason why this happens, and points to the need for an adjustment in the way we interpret PSA scores that will take body weight into account. If not, we may be missing a large number of cancers each year." read more

Australia Proposes “Tubby Tax” for Obese Travelers
“Pay extra or leave your fat behind on terra firma.” That could be a new airline rule in the near future if a proposal by Australian health experts passes into law. The proposal intends to charge obese passengers an additional tax for every extra kilo they weigh. According to Dr. John Tickell who’s heading the Australian committee behind the proposal: carrying a whole load of heavy weight cargo costs airlines fuel, and if you’re the one bringing all the additional weight on board it’s only fair that you should pay for it. The sentiment is cynically practical, but you can expect discrimination charges to begin flying around faster than you can say “Jenny Craig.” In actuality, it’s a polite way of telling hefty passengers, “No fatties, please – at least not for free!” Any attempt to set a prescribed weight limit for flying is liable to open up a legal can of worms. It begs the question of how skinnier travelers will respond to such rules if they are imple

He chose to lose weight to get admitted himself. His employer backed skills visa was initially rejected by immigration officials when they discovered his BMI was 42, making him morbidly obese under New Zealand regulations.Mr Trezise, a submarine cable specialist and a former soldier, said: 'My doctor laughed at me. Children Study: Sleep Deprived More Apt To Become Obese

These same sleep patterns may also predict their subsequent weight later in life. The studies involved children ages 9-12 years olds. While the study did not reveal the reason for this trend, they of course offer many theories as to why. Less Sleep Produces Obese Kids
The lesser you sleep the obese you would get. This kind of sounds contradictory but based on researches and studies made, adults and kids who get less sleep are likely to turn to food to make up for the lost sleeping respite they have passed up. Sleep deprived people produce more ghrelin, a hormone that promotes hunger and less leptin, a hormone that singals fullness. (Source: Yahoo News). Now this more than explains why parents should push their kids to sleep early. These are the internal body factors that people do not understand nor see. They operate to make up for lost rest, and the adjustment stage is known to affect the body. Before we do not know for sure what exactly in our bodies are being affected. With this affirmation coming from the University of Michigan, people will perhaps now be more cautious of the altering effects that may effect kids when they least expect it. The Only Thing Worse Would Be An Obese Smoker!!
Well, let’s just roll two of my top topics into one blog and see if we can bring a little common sense to bear on the causes of cancer. If a poll was taken and people were asked to name the leading causes of heart disease and cancer, I suspect (because it would be my guess), that most people would guess smoking. Certainly it would be at the head of the class for cancer. I mean there’s lung cancer which is almost never linked to anything else. I mentioned in a recent post that smoking increases the risk of death from prostate cancer. Smoking substantially increases a person’s risk of developing cancer of the larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. Now a major report comes out and essentially says that obesity is “a cancer risk that approaches and may even surpass smoking”. If you add to that smoking gun the fact that obesity is a major culprit in diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other mortality laced health issues, sudd

What Makes Kids Obese? The Answer is No Surprise
Lifestyles with too little movement, too much TV exposure and way too much junk food are pushing U.S. children toward a life of overweight and obesity, a collection of new studies finds. The studies -- published in a special supplement of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine -- show the myriad challenges youngsters face every day in trying to maintain a healthy weight. Today's kids live in a world where it's often easier to get a fast food meal than fresh fruit, where walking to school is the exception rather than the norm, and where they're bombarded by ads telling them to eat more junk food and sugary beverages. When we think of losing weight, what comes instantly to our mind? Yes. Diet pills are among the first chain of thoughts that come to our minds. Gamuts of diet pills are available in the weight loss market, to choose the right one can be quite complicated. Have you heard about Acomplia? Acomplia is a diet pill which can facilitate an obese to get rid of their extra body fat with efficacy. Acomplia diet pill works upon the principle of an appetite suppressant. The CB- 1 receptors situated in the Endo-cannabinoid system are responsible for the intake of food in the body. Consumption of Acomplia primarily blocks the functioning of the CB-1 receptors. In this way, Acomplia suppresses your normal intake of food and you tend to eat in small portions, and thereby lose weight. Did you know that Acomplia besides weight is also beneficial in smoking cessation and improvement in cardio metabolic risk factors? Yes, that is true. In accordance to the 2years clinical trials these facts have been prov

Purchase Sibutramine Now - Weight loss for obese adults
A new study shows that treatment with a lifestyle modification program of diet, exercise and behavioral therapy when used in combination with the weight loss medication sibutramine (Meridia) resulted in significantly greater weight loss among obese adults than treatment with the medication alone. The study, conducted by researchers from the University of Pennsylvania, appears in the November 17, 2005 issue of The New England Journal of Medicine and was supported by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), one of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). “Lifestyle modification should be the first line of treatment for obesity,” says Susan Yanovski, M.D., director of the Obesity and Eating Disorders Program for NIDDK, and author of an accompanying editorial in the journal. “But for obese adults who can’t lose enough weight to improve their health, medication used as an adjunct can help.” “The take home message is

Sibutramine Combined With Behavior Changes May Help Obese Adolescents Lose Weight
The weight loss medication sibutramine, when combined with behavior therapy, allowed hundreds of very obese adolescents to lose an average of 14 pounds over a year, according to a multicenter study in the July 18 Annals of Internal Medicine. Adolescents in the study who received placebo (a sugar pill) gained four pounds over the year. In addition to reductions in body mass index and weight, the treated adolescents had improvements in disease risk factors related to obesity. They had lower levels of triglycerides and higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which are risk factors for heart disease, and lower levels of insulin, a risk factor for diabetes. The only significant side effect was tachycardia, or rapid heart beat. Although sibutramine, sold under the brand name Meridia, is currently used in adults with obesity, “this is the first large multicenter trial of sibutramine for obese adolescents,” said study leader Robert I. Berkowitz, M.D., chief of Child

Meridia (sibutramine), combined with behavioural therapy, has been shown to be effective in helping obese teenagers lose weight, according to a study carried out by Dr. R Berkowitz and team at Children Hospital of Philadelphia. The researchers found the treatment is effective for obese 12-year-olds as well. The study involved 498 12-16 year old children at 33 weight-loss clinics - all of the children were obese. The children were divided into two groups, one received Meridia combined with behavioural therapy while the other received a placebo and behavioural therapy. The Meridia group lost an average of 14 pounds over a year, while those on a placebo carried on gaining weight. Those on Meridia also managed to achieve better HDL cholesterol levels and triglycerides (HDL is the good cholesterol). The study found Meridia is relatively safe and effective for younger teenagers. Acomplia Rimonabant A New Kind of Appetite Suppressant - Hope for the Obese?
Overweight or obese people who are stout around the waist and abdomen are particularly at high risk for developing type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure. The most effective way to reduce blood pressure and the risk for secondary diseases is to reduce weight. But most patients do not succeed in losing weight and keeping it off. A possible alternative could be an entirely new substance group which simultaneously blocks feelings of hunger and reduces blood lipid levels, thereby reducing the risk for cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. The new drug, called Rimonabant, has been tested in clinical trials for over two years in Europe and the USA. The European Director of the clinical trials, Professor Luc Van Gaal of the University Hospital in Antwerp, Belgium, presented results of this study at the 4th International Symposium on Obesity and Hypertension at the Max Delbrck Center for Molecular Medicine (MDC) Berlin-Buch on Saturday, October 29, 2005. Rimonabant Drug Shows Promise in Helping Obese Patients Lose Weight
After two years on a drug that affects the pleasure center of the brain, obese patients had reason to feel good: Their bellies shrank, their cholesterol improved and their insulin levels moved toward normal, according to research presented Tuesday in New Orleans. In the trial, more than 3,000 patients lost an average of 19 pounds, including an important reduction of 3.1 inches on their waistlines, compared with a 5-pound weight loss in the placebo group. Central fat is the kind that is most associated with heart disease risk. Results of the latest trial of the drug rimonabant, which works on certain receptors in brain cells, were presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions. A Milwaukee hospital will be conducting a new clinical trial of the drug beginning next month. “It could be an exciting new player in obesity,” said Robert Eckel, a physician and professor of physiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center who was not as

We’re Getting More and More Obese
There has been a lot of talk lately about healthy eating and its converse – obesity. In a somewhat depressing article released recently on USAToday.com, I learned that obesity is continuing to increase in 31 states and that it is not decreasing in any states at all. That is a rather dim report for the state of America’s health. Mississippi had the highest percentage of all states – 30% of all adults were considered obese. And according to the Trust for America’s Health, West Virginia and Alabama were close behind. The best state in terms of lean adults was my home state of Colorado with its obesity rate projected at 17.6%. For those of you wondering, obesity is calculated using a person’s BMI or Body Mass Index. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) states that “generally, anyone with a body mass index greater than 30 is considered obese. The index is a ratio that takes into account height and weight. The overweight range is 25 to 29.9. Normal is 18.5 to 24.9. People wit

Understanding How Obese Fat Cells Work
In obese individuals, fat cells are bloated and inflamed because they receive too many nutrients, including lipids. In these cells, various components cannot work properly anymore and, instead, they activate new proteins to cope with the situation. One of the most challenged organelles in obese fat cells is a maze-like compartment called the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that makes proteins and lipid droplets and senses the amount of nutrients that enter the cell. Margaret F. Gregor and Gokhan S. Hotamisligil review current knowledge about how the ER works in fat cells and is modified in obesity. They show that when a fat cell receives too many nutrients, the ER is overwhelmed and triggers a process called the unfolded protein response (UPR). This process is one of many cellular responses that activate proteins that increase inflammation and can even result in the death of the cell. UPR also causes insulin resistance, a condition in which the production and function of insulin — a h

Lesbians twice as likely to be obese …
I’m not kidding … this is a real article from The Daily Telegraph: LESBIANS are twice as likely as heterosexual women to be overweight or obese, which puts them at greater risk for obesity-related health problems and death, US researchers said. The report, published in the American Journal of Public Health, is one of the first large studies to look at obesity among lesbians. Ulrike Boehmer of the Boston University School of Public Health and colleagues looked at a 2002 national survey of almost 6000 women, and found that lesbians were 2.69 times more likely to be overweight and 2.47 times more likely to be obese. READ MORE Thankfully I’m quite athletic, so being a lesbian doesn’t necessarily mean I’m going to be obese. Sure, I agree that lesbians are more comfortable with themselves and their body. But we were conditioned to be that way since we had to become comfortable with our own sexuality first. Once that is accomplished, the comfort sort of seeps i

The Sunday Review #18: Parents Of Obese Children Edition
Over the weekend we were shuttling between our town and another big city on some errands. During one of the drives, me and my wife got into an interesting discussion on obese children and their parents’ mentality. The cause of the discussion was a family of 5 (3 obese children with 2 obese parents) who ordered a huge lunch at one of the fast food outlets where we stopped for coffee. I will try to pen a few thoughts that churned out of the discussion. What are parents of already obese, 8~10 year old kids thinking when the kids are gorging on 1/2 pound burgers and massive amounts of Coca Cola? Don’t they worry about the potentially life-threating medical conditions that their kids can develop in future if they continue to pile on fat? It’s not like “oh..I didn’t notice”…especially when you have a 8~10 year old kid weighing 200+ pounds. Kids don’t become obese overnight…it takes years of bad-food-habits. So if you notice your child

Obese Men are most likely to die after car crash
I just found out about an interesting study. It was conducted in Milwakee, USA and it showed that if the person that was involved in a car crash is obese there are more chances that he/she will not make it. A well known fact has been proven some time ago: obesity decreses the body's ability to recover after any kind of injury. Here is what the specialists said:"Obesity imparts anatomical and physiological changes that may either protect or interfere with the body's response to injury. However, it would be a very costly process to have a car modelled on the person's shape to make it as safe as possible - that's really a bespoke car and would take a lot of money and effort to produce. It would be preferable to try to stop people having car accidents in the first place. People who are obese probably have an adverse risk profile and as such are less able to withstand adverse effects on the body and serious injury."
