But research now shows that obese girls are 50 percent less likely to attend college, which may put them in a downward spiral of obesity, health problems and low income. The author of the study, sociologist Robert Crosno, said that, “Obese girls were less likely to enter college after high school than were their non-obese peers, especially when they attended schools in which obesity was relatively uncommon.” The study looked at data for 11,000 adolescents from 128 schools. The goal of the research was to study how obesity predicts maladjustment. The study also found that obese girls had higher class failure and self-rejection.

Of Obese Bodies And Svelte Minds:
This is slightly off topic, but is good food for thought as it highlights why plastic surgery should not be viewed as a means to an end by people. Yesterday’s edition of the Houston Chronicle narrated an inspiring story about the thirty nine year old Jennylin Duany, a large-bodied woman who is an experimental theatre actor. If you check out the link you will see that Jennylin is no ‘perfect-sized’ woman. In fact, she is completely different from the regular Hollywood actors. What caught my attention was the statement she made, "So much gets held in the body; my piece is about letting go of our body trappings. We spend so much time chasing ideals that we forget who we are." Rather powerful when we look at Jennylin’s showbiz compatriots who seem to be in a race against time. But w

Obese No More, So Next P.O.A.? The Tummy Tuck:
Congratulations, you are no longer the ‘obese one’ among the three Americans (statistically speaking) said to suffer from obesity. You are eating right and are physically more active than you have ever been. You have worked hard on your psychological state and have a more positive outlook. But all these improved aspects of your life aside, is your body still retaining a lumpy look? While one of the remnants of obesity is an un-toned body, there are usually ways in which this can be corrected. One of the best ways to take care of excess skin in the abdominal area is a through a combination of a tummy tuck and liposuction plastic surgery procedure. The tummy tuck procedure tightens the muscles in the lower abdomen while the liposuction suctions off any residual fat after weight l

Very obese people who need a kidney transplant are far less likely to get one than normal weight people, and when they do, their wait is an average of a year to 18 months longer, a new study found. The reason seems to be both economic and medical. Very obese people have a greater risk for complications, and the transplant centers often must bear the additional cost of treating those problems. read more

Adjusting PSA Scores For Obese Men Or Cancers May Be Missed
"Obese men have more blood circulating throughout their bodies than normal weight men, and as a result, the concentration of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the blood -- the gold standard for detecting prostate cancer -- can become diluted," said Stephen Freedland, M.D., a Duke urologist and senior researcher on the study.* "We've known for a while that obese men tend to have lower PSA scores than normal weight men, but our study really proposes a reason why this happens, and points to the need for an adjustment in the way we interpret PSA scores that will take body weight into account. If not, we may be missing a large number of cancers each year." read more

Lifeline for the obese in India!
Addicted to junk grabs? Don't worry. Doctors in India are now offering a lifeline to fast food addicts and couch potatoes, whose mass of fatty tissues is touching the obesity meter. It's Bariatric or weight loss surgery which helps a obese to get back in shape by tinkering with the size of the stomachs. A person with a bio mass index of 35.2 is considered obese by doctors. "It is not liposuction. Bariatric surgery is a medical procedure in which the stomach is reduced to limit the intake of food and lose weight in the process," says Dr Sandeep Malhotra of the Obesity Control Team at the Artemis Hospital in Gurgaon. read more

Australia Proposes “Tubby Tax” for Obese Travelers
“Pay extra or leave your fat behind on terra firma.” That could be a new airline rule in the near future if a proposal by Australian health experts passes into law. The proposal intends to charge obese passengers an additional tax for every extra kilo they weigh. According to Dr. John Tickell who’s heading the Australian committee behind the proposal: carrying a whole load of heavy weight cargo costs airlines fuel, and if you’re the one bringing all the additional weight on board it’s only fair that you should pay for it. The sentiment is cynically practical, but you can expect discrimination charges to begin flying around faster than you can say “Jenny Craig.” In actuality, it’s a polite way of telling hefty passengers, “No fatties, please – at least not for free!” Any attempt to set a prescribed weight limit for flying is liable to open up a legal can of worms. It begs the question of how skinnier travelers will respond to such rules if they are imple

      New Zealand Bans the Obese
Doctors in New Zealand recently campaigned to ban fat people from entering the Country. How, I hear you say, can this not be discriminatory. Well it has been successful and has now happened.35 year old Rowan Trezise has been rejected from entering New Zealand when her husband applied for a work visa. He chose to lose weight to get admitted himself. His employer backed skills visa was initially rejected by immigration officials when they discovered his BMI was 42, making him morbidly obese under New Zealand regulations.Mr Trezise, a submarine cable specialist and a former soldier, said: 'My doctor laughed at me. He said he’d never seen anything more ridiculous in his whole life. Not every overweight person is unhealthy or unfit.'But Robyn Toomath, a spokesman for Fight the Obesity Epidemic and an endocrinologist, said the BMI limit was valid in the vast majority of people. She said she was opposed to obese people being stigmatised. 'However, the immigration department’s focus is

The authors explain that recent studies have indicated that America's obese population may have gotten healthier since the 1960s. It seems that the prevalence of high cholesterol and hypertension (high blood pressure) among America's obese people has fallen over the last 40 years. What is not clear, however, is whether this group is enjoying better health outcomes in other areas. read more

Children Study: Sleep Deprived More Apt To Become Obese
Pediatric Researchers at the University of Michigan have revealed that children who consistently get less sleep are more likely to become overweight. These same sleep patterns may also predict their subsequent weight later in life. The studies involved children ages 9-12 years olds. Those who generally got less than nine hours of sleep were more likely to be overweight in Grade 6, regardless of their weight in Grade 3 and other factors such as race, gender, and class.” ~ Children Who Stay Up Late at Risk of Obesity: Study This is pretty startling to say the least, and one more reason to enforce strict bedtime curfew for your children. While the study did not reveal the reason for this trend, they of course offer many theories as to why. The theory that rings the truest with me is their biological explanation as to why this may be happening - which is there may be a direct link between children’s sleep patterns and the hormones that regulate their fat metabolism. Less Sleep Produces Obese Kids
The lesser you sleep the obese you would get. This kind of sounds contradictory but based on researches and studies made, adults and kids who get less sleep are likely to turn to food to make up for the lost sleeping respite they have passed up. Sleep deprived people produce more ghrelin, a hormone that promotes hunger and less leptin, a hormone that singals fullness. (Source: Yahoo News). Now this more than explains why parents should push their kids to sleep early. These are the internal body factors that people do not understand nor see. They operate to make up for lost rest, and the adjustment stage is known to affect the body. Before we do not know for sure what exactly in our bodies are being affected. With this affirmation coming from the University of Michigan, people will perhaps now be more cautious of the altering effects that may effect kids when they least expect it. The Only Thing Worse Would Be An Obese Smoker!!
Well, let’s just roll two of my top topics into one blog and see if we can bring a little common sense to bear on the causes of cancer. If a poll was taken and people were asked to name the leading causes of heart disease and cancer, I suspect (because it would be my guess), that most people would guess smoking. Certainly it would be at the head of the class for cancer. I mean there’s lung cancer which is almost never linked to anything else. I mentioned in a recent post that smoking increases the risk of death from prostate cancer. Smoking substantially increases a person’s risk of developing cancer of the larynx, pharynx, oral cavity, esophagus, bladder, kidney, and pancreas. Now a major report comes out and essentially says that obesity is “a cancer risk that approaches and may even surpass smoking”. If you add to that smoking gun the fact that obesity is a major culprit in diabetes, heart disease, and a host of other mortality laced health issues, sudd

Clarian Health Partners Inc. was among the first companies to take advantage of these new rules. I first read about Clarian’s changes in an article published by MoneyNing. The studies -- published in a special supplement of the American Journal of Preventive Medicine -- show the myriad challenges youngsters face every day in trying to maintain a healthy weight. Today's kids live in a world where it's often easier to get a fast food meal than fresh fruit, where walking to school is the exception rather than the norm, and where they're bombarded by ads telling them to eat more junk food and sugary beverages. The weight loss medication sibutramine, when combined with behavior therapy, allowed hundreds of very obese adolescents to lose an average of 14 pounds over a year, according to a multicenter study in the July 18 Annals of Internal Medicine. Adolescents in the study who received placebo (a sugar pill) gained four pounds over the year. In addition to reductions in body mass index and weight, the treated adolescents had improvements in disease risk factors related to obesity. They had lower levels of triglycerides and higher levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, which are risk factors for heart disease, and lower levels of insulin, a risk factor for diabetes. The only significant side effect was tachycardia, or rapid heart beat.
