From: The Nuclear Option   As far back as 1978, Tom Alexander—an award-winning science writer with a deep knowledge of economics and ecology—urged utilities in the pages of Fortune to resuscitate the already-flagging nuclear industry lest a ramp-up in coal-fired electricity "trigger irreversible changes in the world's climate." The ramp-up happened on schedule; the changes in climate too. Which now makes it very hard to ignore the fact that whatever else nuclear power does to the environment, however many fish it kills or however much waste it leaves in our great-great-great-great-grandchildren's hands, it emits neither soot nor smoke nor mercury, and far less carbon dioxide than the coal that keeps most of our lights on. I also believe this to be true of nuclear power, yet another ill-conceived "solution" to the dual fossil fuel-shortage/climate change conundrum in which we presently find ourselves. In fact, harnessing nuclear energy may qualify as an even stupider idea than harnessing biofuels, only because it represents humans' repeating the exact same mistakes they have made with respect to fossil fuels. While no parts caused any accidents, many have been recalled. What's behind the supply-chain hiccups? Basically, the shrinkage of the domestic nuclear industry after it went walkabout in the late 1970s, the paper says. To fill the gap, foreign or inexperienced firms have started making small but critical components for reactors. Says the WSJ: NRC Chairman Dale Klein has expressed concern about the supply chain, noting that 1,350 American companies were members of the American Nuclear Society, the key professional association for the industry, in 1977.

Karachi, Bombay, and dozens of other South Asian cities catch fire like Hiroshima and Nagasaki did at the end of World War II.Beyond the local human tragedy of such a situation, a new study looking at the atmospheric chemistry of regional nuclear war finds that the hot smoke from burning cities would tear holes in the ozone layer of the Earth. The increased UV radiation resulting from the ozone loss could more than double DNA damage, and increase cancer rat

The Candidates Positions Re Iran's Nuclear Ambitions: Time for Some Clarification
Iran’s leaders are once again displaying their usual intransigence concerning Iran’s nuclear and uranium enrichment programs. They have refused Security Council and European attempts to engage them in a new round of negotiations despite the new round of sanctions and offers of sweetened incentives. And they continue to play the IAEA card without providing any real insights into their accelerating nuclear programs. This refusal to engage in any meaningful dialogue on their nuclear program,...(read more)

      Nuclear move reported in Iran
From an AP report : Iran has assembled hundreds of advanced machines reflecting a possible intention to speed up uranium enrichment, diplomats told The Associated Press. One diplomat said more than 300 of the centrifuges have been linked up in two separate units in Iran's underground enrichment plant and a third was being assembled. He said the machines apparently are more advanced than the thousands already running underground, suggesting they could be the sophisticated IR-2 centrifuge that Tehran recently acknowledged testing. But a senior diplomat said that while the new work appeared to include advanced centrifuges, they were not IR-2s. He added that it was unclear whether the machines were above or below ground. The location is significant, because the aboveground site at Na

      Nuclear Power Is Not Clean
I used to think it was, but it isn't.Some people still try to argue it is.Here's why I don't think nuclear power is clean: it produces toxic waste.There. Simple, right? Sure, we store it away, hide it, save it for a rainy day, but that toxic sludge builds up and builds up. Just like greenhouse gas emissions build up.Hydrogen fuel cell technology will produce water vapor. That's it. That's truly clean.

FARC Uranium May Be Depleted, But It's Still Nuclear Material
Let's assume that the 33 kilos of nuclear material discovered last week by Colombian officials allegedly cached by FARC was almost worthless, and represented no real security threat, as suggested by Aaron Mannes in his article "DU Dud." Does that mean we should conclude, as he does, that it represented desperation, ignorance, failure of judgment, or incompetence by the FARC, making FARC either (a) the victim of the scam, no longer feared by the person scamming FARC, or (b) the scammer who would hurt...(read more)

"Bush reassured Hu Jintao US shipment of nuclear missile components to Taiwan in 2006 was 'mistake' "
Stephen Hadley, the White House national security adviser, said Mr Bush made the comments to Mr Hu in a phone call on Wednesday morning. The Pentagon on Tuesday said the US had mistakenly sent electrical fuses for intercontinental ballistic missiles, instead of a consignment of helicopter batteries. Taiwan on Wednesday disputed initial Pentagon claims that it had only informed the US about the mistaken shipment this January. Lisa Chi, a Taiwanese military spokeswoman, said Taipei informed the Pentagon immediately after receiving the shipment in August 2006. "We put the shipment in classified storage and notified our US counterparts immediately," said Ms Chi. A senior Bush administration official on Wednesday confirmed the Taiwanese account, blaming the original discrepancy on "log

      Nuclear Oops
China upset over errant U.S. missile part shipment - CNN.com Four nose cone fuses for intercontinental ballistic missiles were shipped to Taiwan instead of the the helicopter batteries it had ordered, Wynne said. He said the fuses, intended for a Minuteman strategic nuclear missile, were returned to the United States after the mistake was discovered.Oops. We're terribly sorry we sent nuclear missile components to Taiwan. This sort of thing scares the hell out of me. It's the same kind of problem that has terrorists in Afghanistan and Iraq fighting with our guns. How the hell do these kinds of mistakes happen? Exactly how do we accidentally ship nuclear missile components to Taiwan?I don't care how big the DOD is, or how complex it is to keep track of deadly weapons, I'm certain this

Fuses for Nuclear Warheads Instead of Helicopter Batteries–Hey, Anyone Could Make That Mistake
The New York Times reports that the U.S. shipped four fuses for nuclear missile warheads to Taiwan instead of helicopter batteries (the shipment itself did not contain nuclear material, and the U.S. says this was not an intentional shipment). China, of course, can get kind of touchy about issues involving Taiwan. This is a weird story–the Times says the shipment was made more than a year ago, but the mistake was only noticed last week. This isn't the first time there's been a mistake made in this area–last year, six nuclear warheads were mistakenly flown from North Dakota to Louisiana. After last year's screw-up, the Air Force supposedly investigated. Might be worth it for Congress to hold hearings on this matter to find out why these two incidents occurred, and whether any

Keeping Up With The (Nuclear) Joneses
In the last two years, more than a dozen Arab states have announced plans to pursue nuclear power programs. This has raised concerns that such countries are interested in developing nuclear weapons. All state parties to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) have the legal right to develop nuclear energy programs. Yet civilian nuclear power programs can provide the technology and expertise

      LA Times Anything But Nuclear
Anything but a return to nuclear power, says an L.A. Times editorial, slamming Gov. Schwarzenegger's recent bullish nuclear comments. Renewables might be the answer to the global resource crunch, suggests Energy Outlook, but that will require a top-down rethink of energy policy. One policy prescription: Forget the "safety valve" on cap-and-trade schemes, argues Earth2Tech. An ejection seat undermines the whole point of pricing carbon. Pain at the pump is the fault of the oilmen in the White House, says a NYT editorial, and drilling in Alaska won't solve the problem. The Economist offers a graphic look at how little pain there really is, comparing gasoline taxes around the world. Nuclear Batteries
The University of Rochester has issued a press release stating that, using existing technology, they have developed a battery with a 10-year lifespan. Gone will be the days of worrying about your laptop charger on business trips. The theory is the silicon in the battery will capture electrons expelled from a radioactive gas to form a current. What has held these batteries back in the past was the little amount of current they provided. Due to the nature of radioactivity, half the electrons chucked out miss the silicon altogether. It's rather like the sun: It emits a hell of a lot of thermal energy, but only a tiny portion hits our planet. The University of Rochester plans to increase the silicon's surface area in order to catch more electrons. To accomplish this, they have designed little

Twin Threats: Nuclear Proliferation and Global Warming
Today at Take Back America I had the opportunity to hear a provocative presentation on the movement against nuclear proliferation by Joe Cirincione of Ploughshares Fund. Cirincione made the compelling point that nuclear proliferation and global warming rank as the two greatest threats to America’s national security and to the well-being of people in general. He believes that the movements on both of these issues should coordinate to reframe the entire national security debate away from the vague rhetoric of “terrorism” and “evil” to address real, frightening threats. By speaking out strongly on these two issues, in other words, progressives can demonstrate that they and not conservative reactionaries are at the forefront of the national security debate. He con
