Home sales in Massachusetts dropped in November at a double-digit rate for the third straight month, yet house prices fell only modestly in neighborhoods that have so far escaped the subprime mortgage crisis.Sales of single-family houses plunged 15.4 percent last month compared with November of last year, Warren Group, a Boston real estate and publishing firm, reported yesterday. The sales total of 3,538 single-family homes last month was the lowest for November since the recession of 1991. Condo sales plunged 23.2 percent in November.

Prices are up 11.2% from last year but home sales are down 20.5% from this time last year. The market is definitely doing some funny stuff these days, places that aren’t priced right are sitting around and gathering dust, but places that are priced well, staged well and marketed well are still flying off the market with multiple offers over the asking price. Of course, some sellers are unrealistic and want to sell there home for WAY more than it’s worth, and some buyers are unrealistic and want to steal a place from the seller for WAY less than it’s worth. But that’s just human nature for the most part, though some of it is definitely fueled by the doom and gloom that we keep seeing in the media. Today's New Residential Construction Report continues to firmly indicate the intensity of the second leg down in the decline to the nation's housing markets and for new residential construction showing substantial declines on a year-over-year and month-to-month basis to single family permits both nationally and across every region.Single family housing permits, the most leading of indicators, again suggests extensive weakness in future construction activity dropping 33.7% nationally as compared to November 2006.Moreover, every region showed significant double digit declines to permits with the West declining 39.6%, the South declining 36.6%, the Midwest declining 20.6% and the Northeast declining 20.9%.Keep in mind that these declines are coming on the back of last year's record declines.To illustrate the extent to which permits and starts have declined, I have created the following charts (click for larger versions) that show the percentage changes of the current values compared

Forbes is reporting November's NPD numbers for game consoles sold, including black Friday and Cyber Monday, the bottom line; it is good to be Nintendo. On Friday, the NPD Group, a research firm, released its November sales report for game consoles. At the top of the pack was Nintendo with 981,000 Wii consoles sold. Behind Nintendo, was the Microsoft XBox 360, with 770,000 consoles sold, and the Sony Playstation 3, with 460,000 units sold, less-than half of Nintendo’s figure. Source: Forbes Not a bad showing for Nintendo, and not a bad showing for Microsoft either, although Halo 3 sales probably bumped that up a bit. Sony still stuck in last place, even with the price drop and the 40Gig model on the streets. There is little wonder that they did not want to talk about anything until the NPD numbers came out. It will be interesting to see how Sony responds, if they do, as the PS2 sold 496,000 units in November, more than they sold PS3's. December's numbers should be equal

Crofton real estate statistics released by Metropolitan Regional Information Systems, Inc. (MRIS) today had one thing that jumped out and grabbed me:  The number of units sold in November 2007, compared to November 2006, was down 54%.  That may be the most dramatic drop we have seen all year, to the lowest point of 2007.  This is very disappointing after an increase in units sold last month, which suggested there might be a turn-around occurring.
