When you’re Notre Dame, expectations are usually high.  When you’re 0-5, a bowl bid is next to impossible to obtain even if you win out the rest of the season.  The Fighting Irish, fighting through one of their worst seasons ever, won for the first time this season defeating the UCLA Bruins 20-6.  The win was their first in eight games, dating back to last season; the last time Notre Dame lost 8 straight was 1960 when they won their opener then lost 8 consecutive games. Turnovers proved to be key to the Fighting Irish victory; they knocked UCLA starting quarterback Ben Olsen out of the game with a knee injury late in the first quarter, then pressured reserve QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson into multiple miscues the rest of the game.  UCLA QB’s were intercepted 4 times. Notre Dame QB Jimmy Clausen put the Irish ahead 13-6 when he QB-sneaked inot the end zone with 1:53 left in the 3rd quarter.  Irish linebacker Maurice Crum made the score 20-6 when he scooped a Be

      Take Heart Notre Dame Fans
Granted, we who consider the University of Notre Dame du Lac, South Bend, Ind., to be the bastion of education and football are, to put it mildly, heavily depressed at the dismal failure of this season's football team. ND's unprecedented 0-4 season start is anything but encouraging even though the Fighting Irish gridders showed at least a few hints of improvement with their season's first two

Top Story of the Weekend: Michigan vs. Notre Dame
The Wolverines are no longer being laughed at after earning their first win of the 2007 season over Notre Dame.

      What’s happening to Notre Dame?
Notre Dame’s offense got into the end zone — twice, in fact. It wasn’t nearly enough to end the misery for the Fighting Irish. For the first time in 119 seasons of Notre Dame football, the Irish are 0-4. Michigan State, which blew a big lead to Notre Dame a year ago in a loss that sent its season in a tailspin, got a measure of revenge against the floundering Fighting Irish with a 31-14 victory Saturday. Now it’s Notre Dame’s season that’s spinning out of control. The Irish have lost six in a row, the second longest losing streak in school history, and allowed at least 30 points in each game. Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis said he wasn’t focusing on the worst start ever.

Notre Dame is Worse Than We Thought
"We're really not getting good at anything," coach Charlie Weis acknowledged of Notre Dame, which has an offense that rates as the very worst in the country in most meaningful statistical categories. The hapless Irish head to 3-0 Michigan State this week trying to avoid a sixth consecutive loss for the first time since 1960, when they lost eight in a row in the midst of the Joe Kuharich era.

Double D to Notre Dame for College Football Rankings
Charlie Weis should receive an award for creating one of the weirdest strategies for College Football. After all the expectation he was trying to create by hiding the name of Notre Dame’s starting QB against Georgia Tech last Sunday, his team was beaten by 30 points. Something never seen during Weis’ time as head coach. Well, at least he could actually turn that into a surprise, since nobody could’ve seen it coming. And, yes, by this I mean…Demetrius Jones?! What was going through his head? It is known that throwing some TDs is not exactly Jones’ specialty. The guy is more like the running type. Maybe he could have a few good moments, but he’s still not starting Quarterback material. It could have been anything that caused this shocking loss, but a bad choice like the one Weis did definitely had its influence on the College Football scores: it was so painful that they had to have him replaced ASAP. The Yellow Jackets thrashed the team, incluiding Weis and his over-an

Tradition Never Graduates: A Season Inside Notre Dame Football
Charlie Weis is sitting behind the desk in his office at the University of Notre Dame when the subject turns to winning a national championship. "My expectations are a lot higher than other people," he says. "Some people say they're not realistic, but that's too bad. I didn't come here for any other reason. I'm never going to go into a game expecting to lose. If I do, they should fire me." The

Notre Dame and Charlie Weis Look to Prove Plenty
Charlie Weis put his hands on his hips, wrapped them behind his back and rubbed the ridges of his face. He crossed his arms, swayed from side to side and stood up straighter. Despite all the fidgeting, his eyes never budged. They remained locked on the five quarterbacks lined up before him, particularly the three in the middle: Demetrius Jones, Evan Sharpley and Jimmy Clausen. Play-action drills

Notre Dame Football Recruiting Needs for 2008
Defensive End The top four defensive ends on the roster are all seniors, and Notre Dame failed to bring in any freshmen this year to fill this need. Though Kerry Neal out of Bunn, N.C., is an effective pass rusher, he is expected to play outside linebacker in the Irish's 3-4-scheme, and Ian Williams out of Longwood, Fla., is expected to line up at nose guard. The one positive here is Notre Dame

Is Notre Dame Football Going to Join the Big East?
News: "Notre Dame will use Big East [football] officiating crews this season instead of crews from the Big Ten." That's all the little blurb, at the bottom of an SI.com article about the ND QB battle, said. However, you'd think if that 12th slot the Big 10 has left for ND over the years was really going to South Bend, ND wouldn't be switching to officials from the Big East conference. Not to mention the 2005 scheduling deal that ND struck with the Big East. Comments like " . . . the Big East has been a very beneficial relationship for us, and Mike T. encouraged us to do what we could, specifically if we would consider the prospect of making more of a commitment" does make it seem like the thought has crossed a few minds over in South Bend. You have to think that Big East Commissioner Mike Tranghese is sitting a lot prettier now compared to when the ACC gutted him and his league a few years ago. Just don't ask him to give a convincing smile about it.Pre Pro Sports Take: Notre Dame Fo

Notre Dame signs Jackson until 2013 (CSTV U-WIRE)
(CSTV U-WIRE) SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Coming off a record-breaking season in which the Irish finished 32-7-3, Notre Dame attempted to ensure the continued success of the hockey program Tuesday, signing coach Jeff Jackson to a two-year contract extension. Jackson, who built the Irish program into a national contender in two years, will now be behind the bench for Notre Dame until the 2012-13 season. But if things go as planned, he said, he will be sticking along for much longer than more…

      Brady Quinn, QB, Notre Dame
If the Browns decide to choose a QB (and I hope they don't), then my choice would be Brady Quinn. While JaMarcus Russell is a tremendously gifted athlete with a cannon for an arm, Brady Quinn is a more polished passer who is more prepared to step into a pro offense.Sentiment has shifted from Quinn to Russell over the past few months, in part due to LSU's bowl win over Notre Dame, but overall Quinn has a longer track record of quality play with a mediocre supporting cast, than Russell has with a better supporting cast. Russell is raw and probably has more upside, but also more potential downside and therefore is the riskier pick.

Bill Simmons Breaks Down Notre Dame's Chances in the NCAA Tournament
OUSTED IN THE SECOND ROUND25-24. Boston College (7), Notre Dame (6)It's been difficult for me to root against BC this season for two reasons: I thoroughly enjoy watching Jared Dudley and Tyrese Rice, and Al Skinner's decision to kick his best big guy (Sean Williams) off the team for being a bad guy was genuinely admirable. It reminded me of the way Jim Calhoun handled the laptop scandal at UConn

Clausen Brings Spikey Head to Notre Dame Early
News: Jimmy Clausen, the wonder-kid brother of former Tennessee starters Rick and Casey, has become one of the first early-enrollee recruits at Notre Dame. Florida RB Armando Allen also made his way in early. Allen missed his entire senior year to a leg injury.Fantasy College Impact: Now, we wouldn't recommend basing your draft strategy based on a player's hairstyle, but you have to think twice about a kid who wears a blond porcupine on his head at his press conference. Of course, we were told by some youngsters that Clausen's hair was the "in" thing right now . . . we'll have to take their word for it.Honestly, this kid is supposed to be the crap. And under the tutelage of Charlie Weis, you'd think there is a lot of potential from a player that posted 146 PaTd and 10,677 PaYd in high school. However, remember this is Notre Dame and Weis suffers no fools. There is a whole lotta playbook for Clausen to learn and a lot of competition at the QB slot in (Evan Sharpley, Demetrius Jones

Notre Dame confirms commitment to stay and expand
According to an article in today's New Haven Register entitled "Notre Dame to expand, upgrade building", Notre Dame High School is expelling rumors of relocation out of town, and has presented a roughly $8.5-10 million plan to expand and renovate by 2010. In doing so, they chose a West Haven firm, Sapienza & Lessig Architects & Planners, to devise the plan. As Notre Dame is a private school, the cost of these renovations aren't going to be born by taxpayers; 1/2 will be raised through private fundraising, and half will come through nonprofit bonding.A big hurray! to Notre Dame for staying...As posted on LowerWestHavenTaxes.blogspot.com.
