By Stephen RhodesAs has been expected all along and as reported by Josh Peter of Yahoo! Sports, Barry Bonds entered a not guilty plea through his attorney on Friday to charges of obstruction of justice and four counts of perjury that began with his denying in front of a grand jury that he knowingly took steroids; this in essence will force a legal showdown with the federal government. No trial date was set in the hearing; however, one of bonds' attorneys, Michael Rains, said that if the case went to trial, he thinks it will take place either next fall or winter. Bonds' next court appearance is scheduled for February 7, 2008. This all began on Bonds' indictment on the felony charges on November 15, and the arraignment Friday in U.S. District Court was Bonds' first appearance in a courtroom since 2003 when he testified in front of the grand jury that heard testimony and reviewed evidence about the illegal distribution of steroids through the Bay Area Laboratory Co-Operative ,also k

Yesterday, a Cumberland County jury found Charles Triplin not guilty of the crime for which he has spent more than four years behind bars. Until a month before trial, Triplin faced the death penalty for the 2003 murder of Shelly Wooten. The jury reported that they did not believe the testimony of the State’s two main witnesses, both of whom received plea deals in exchange for their testimony, that Triplin was with them on the night of the murder. Said Triplin on his way out of the Cumberland County Jail, “I only came to Fayetteville three times in my life, and I ain’t coming back.”

One of Kentucky’s top high school basketball players plead not guilty to felony drug charges today in District Court. Jonathan “Bud” Mackey, a 6-foot-4 senior guard at Scott County High School, faces two charges: trafficking in a controlled substance — cocaine — and trafficking in a controlled substance within 1,000 yards of a school.
At today’s arraignment, Judge Mary Jane Phelps set Mackey’s preliminary hearing for Nov. 6.
Mackey, who wore a dark suit and white shirt, was silent as he stood beside his attorney, Jerry Wright. Both declined to comment upon leaving the courthouse. Several reporters followed Wright into the parking lot. When one asked how the case could affect Mackey’s basketball career, Wright said nothing and got into his truck to leave.

A construction worker charged with murdering an actress in her Manhattan apartment attacked her because he was worried about immigration officials, say court papers prosecutors filed Wednesday.
"I lost control and kept cursing," the papers quote Diego Pillco, a 19-year-old Ecuadorean, as saying. "She was insulting me. ... I thought she was going to call the police when she went upstairs. I was afraid of immigration."
The papers were filed with a second-degree murder indictment at Pillco's arraignment in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, where he pleaded not guilty in the death of Adrienne Shelly, 40.
The body of Shelly, who appeared in the 2005 movie "Factotum" with Matt Dillon, was found Nov. 1 hanging from a shower rod in the Greenwich Village apartment that she used as an office.
According to the court papers, Pillco said Shelly approached him in the apartment where he was working about trying to make less noise. The two argued, and she threatened to call police, the papers say.
