One summer I was working near a college doing menial work. I was young and it was an exciting location. There were students - who while still far older than me, they were just starting out in this dynamic place of learning. I was glad to be there. One day I found a large stack of hardcover books on top of a dumpster. I made it a point to rescue these fine books and I would end up reading them all from front to back. One of these volumes was Norman Mailer's "The Naked and the Dead." The story took on special important to me. My own grandfather (now since passed) was a WWII veteran in the Pacific Theater. And, judging by this, it's also garbage (which is hardly surprising): "In probing, amusing, and uncommon dialogues conducted over three years but whose topics he has considered for decades, Mailer establishes his own system of belief, one that rejects both organized religion and atheism," according to a statement issued Monday by Random House. "He presents instead an artistic God who often succeeds but can also fail in the face of contrary powers in the universe, with whom war is waged for the souls of humans." This afternoon I went to Bernadette and Norman's wedding at Laguna Hills Senior Center. Bernadette is 75, Norman 78, and they met in my 'Dancing for Senior Fitness' class last year. I saw the sparks flying between them from the very first class and was a witness a few months later, as Norman clumsily asked Bernadette to accompany him to the Senior Cafeteria for meatloaf. Last month he excitedly showed me the ring he bought for her and popped the question! They wasted no time (seeing as they don't have a lot of time to waste!) and the wedding was today. The gals at the Senior Center tried as best as they could to make it look special with white balloons and streamers. They even tied white bows to all the wheel chairs and walkers! Best-known for his 1970 hit "Spirit in the Sky," singer/songwriter Norman Greenbaum was born November 20, 1942, in Malden, MA. He began his musical career while a student at Boston University, playing area coffeehouses before relocating to the West Coast during the mid-'60s and forming a kind of psychedelic jug band dubbed Dr. West's Medicine Show and Junk Band. Sidney & Norman   I love this book.  This is not only my favorite children's book, but maybe my favorite book as well.    Phil Vischer, the creator of VeggieTales and head of Jellyfish, wrote this amazing tale with supercool illustrations by Justin Gerard.   The book is the story of two pigs who live next door to each other.  Norman is a pig who always seems to get everything right and finds it easy to adhere to the rules.  Things come harder for Sidney, who always looks down on himself.  One day, they both get an invitation from God.   This is a book filled with love, love, love, and more self worth than you can shake a stick at.  I highly recommend it and I might even read it to you if we meet.  (well, if you want me to!)

Finally! I get to sit down and write some. Norman Medieval Faire was just awesome and everyone there was great. We've got another show under out belt that we can tell stories about, so here goes.All that work leading up to Norman went well. We were packed and loaded about 1 pm on Thursday afternoon. Since our set up is easy, we figured we could get in anytime and be ready for opeing on Friday morning. But, as per the ol' "April showers bring May flowers" saying goes, Texas on that day had a terrific line of thunderstorms that were just stewing along I-35 from Oklahoma City to Waco. We sat and watched the Weather channel for several hours. We figured as the storms moved eastward, we could leave here and slip up along the back side of the system. Larry choose wrong this time. It seems the storms just stalled right on I-35 and kept moving northward without moving east. Finally, about 4:30 pm we decided it wasn't getting any better so we headed out.
