Obama to Negotiate a Cease-Fire in Nigeria's Oil Wars?
Nigeria's deadly conflicts over oil don't just play a part in driving the price of oil over $120 a barrel. They also leave scores of dead and tear the country apart. Oil-related violence continued this weekend: Militants in Nigeria have blown up an oil flow station belonging to the Shell company in the Niger Delta, causing it to cut some of its production. It is the fifth attack on the oil industry in recent weeks, reducing output and pressuring global prices. [snip] Shell accounts for around half of Nigeria's 2.1 million barrels per day of oil output, and has already been forced to cut production because of a pipeline bombing last month. Oil rises to near $115 on Fed cut, Nigeria strike
Oil futures rose to near $115 a barrel on Thursday, gaining support from an interest rate cut by the US Federal Reserve and the extension of an oil workers' strike in Nigeria. US crude for June was trading up $1.16 at $114.62 a barrel by 0700 GMT, while London Brent Crude rose $1.16 to $112.52. The gains in oil prices came as the Fed on Wednesday cut interest rates by a quarter point to 2 per cent and indicated that it expects inflation to moderate. Traders took the Fed's statement to suggest that more rate cuts are possible. Rate cuts can boost liquidity in financial markets, brighten the outlook for economic activity and energy demand, and weaken the dollar which tends to bolster commodity prices. Additional support came from striking oil workers who have shut down Exxon Mobil's producti

Oil, Violence, and Money in Nigeria
It's not just the war in Iraq that affects the prices you pay at the pump. Via Al Jazeera, we hear that the Nigerian group MEND (Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta) has been cutting deeply into Shell's capacity to export oil from the region: Shell is Nigeria's largest oil operator and accounts for about half of the country's 2.1 million barrels per day output. The reported attacks came as an international energy forum, which brings together oil producers and consumers in Rome, heard that the world was facing a long period of high oil prices. Unrest in Nigeria, along with the weak US dollar and the refusal of oil-producing countries to increase output, has pushed oil to a record $117.81 a barrel in New York. At the same time, London's Brent North Sea crude for June delivery hi

The engine room of cassava business in Nigeria
One of the biggest obstacles to the growth of cassava business in the country is paucity of funds to strengthen the Cassava Empowerment Fund. The fund is constrained by lack of direct sources and marginal take-off grant that is too meager to sustain meaningful development. The nation spent a huge sum of money in research to develop new varieties that improved our yield and that are resistant to the endemic cassava diseases. But no money has been made available for the development of the down stream aspects of the industry which indeed, should drive the entire industry. We now hear of cassava glut because the down stream that should mop up the products are not ready due to lack of adequate funding.Cassava empowerment fundThe fund was initiated by the Flour Millers Association who in a patriot

Tales from the Road: Afghanistan, Thailand, Canada, Nigeria
One of my favorite parts of the Best American Travel Writing anthology each year is series editor Jason Wilson’s foreword. With each new edition he finds a seemingly unrelated anecdote that somehow, unexpectedly, illustrates the point he is trying to make about the value of good travel writing. This year is no exception: he begins with a report about a shark attack in New Jersey, an exceedingly rare event that led to the almost-instantaneous publication of helpful sidebars and advice boxes on How To Survive A Shark Attack in the local papers. This leads Wilson to a discussion of the “If You Go” boxes that accompany most travel content: “Presumably, this information is there in case you want to duplicate the writer’s trip on your own.” But the stories in his anthology - and, I think, the stories I’ve selected here today - come without any practical sidebars, because they can’t be replicated. And in Wilson’s words, “That&r
