Wow. That one was disappointing. While Nexus is rather pretty in color, Mike Baron's future earth (and future melodrama involving decapitated miners mind-powering… something… space ships maybe) is incredibly unimaginative. At the beginning of the first issue is a blurb recapping the previous issues and it freaking gives away one of the surprises.
Basically, all these issues do is introduce earth-bound villains and a sidekick for Nexus. And some very nicely drawn, but narratively impotent fight scenes. Nexus has all this power and he just launched an ongoing series… I'm sure he's going to die in the second issue of it. Heck, maybe he should have.
Baron's take on women borders on misogyny. They're just terrible characters. These issues feature a long cat fight and a female politician who only succeeded through her ability to seduce men. Now, I’ve heard of Nexus, of course. I’d heard of it, I mean. I read a feature in Back Issue about it and, you know, I’d heard of it–especially after Steve Rude told everyone not to buy the Dark Horse released archives because Dark Horse was charging fifty bucks for six issues. But it’s taken me quite a while to get around to reading Nexus. I wanted to start at the beginning, the original three issue black and white, which made things difficult, coupled with the first issue not being very good. Mike Baron’s writing does get good (acceptable might be the better word) until the end of the three issue series, when he finally starts developing characters. Rude’s art changes dramatically from the first chapter to the second, don’t know if those were contained in the same issue at original publication… so, it’s obvious, Nexus just needed a warm-up period.

The event runs for 3 days from 23-25 August and will be the biggest resources event for Churches ever held in Scotland.
