Fannie Mae Shares Slide on News Report
An online article published Thursday afternoon by Fortune magazine questioned Fannie Mae’s accounting for bad loans, sparking a steep sell off in the stock and a quick response from Fannie Mae.
The Fortune article, titled “Fannie Mae’s fuzzy math,” said the government sponsored enterprise has changed the way it accounts for bad loan losses in a way that could “mask that credit losses are rising above levels that the company predicted just three months ago”.
In a Friday morning conference call, Fannie Mae chief financial officer Stephen Swad defended the company’s calculations of its loss ratio and said part of the $670 million credit loss provision reported for the third quarter will be recovered, because some delinquent loans purchased from mortgage securities will cure.
Fannie Mae did not disclose its expected cure rate.
