Good NYT piece today by Samuel G. Freedman, who reports on the spike in enrollment for Florida A&M University's summer band camp, in which some 450 students compete for a spot in the school's famed drumline corps the Marching 100. It's an illuminating look at how stylized marching bands are continuing their work into the digital age, and often enhanced by it. (Students like the Seattle teenager Fr

TreeHugger points to an example of the dawning realization that energy efficiency is the cheapest energy around. "It's gone before you even knew it was there: As energy is unlocked from fuels at power plants, two-thirds of the energy consumed to create electricity is lost. The laws of thermodynamics dictate that conversion efficiency will never be 100 percent, because heat is lost at e

So, even if he didn't do anything, he thought about it and, according to his religion, he may as well have."

In addition to the prescription drug program, George Bush’s Medicare Plan provided for extra payments to private insurance companies to cover Medicare patients. Under these Medicare Advantage plans it now costs about twelve percent more to cover Medicare patients than under the government program, even though the private companies often cherry pick the healthiest patients. The extra payments also provide incentive for fraud. In light of the problems which have been identified with these plan, The New York Times has an editorial today calling for an elimination of the subsidies:
Heavily subsidized private Medicare plans are continuing to prey on elderly Americans despite state, federal and industry efforts to stop them. It is yet another reason to rein in these operations by eliminating their unjustified subsidies.
These plans are a financial drag on Medicare as the government pays them about 12 percent more, on average, than the same services would cost in the traditional Medicar

Excerpt:"In the end, Mr. Obama chose neither to vote for nor against the bill. He voted "present," effectively sidestepping the issue, an option he invoked nearly 130 times as a state senator.Sometimes the "present' votes were in line with instructions from Democratic leaders or because he objected to provisions in bills that he might otherwise support. At other times, Mr. Obama voted present on questions that had overwhelming bipartisan support. In at least a few cases, the issue was politically sensitive. The record has become an issue on the presidential campaign trail, as Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, his chief rival for the Democratic nomination, has seized on the present votes he cast on a series of anti-abortion bills to portray Mr. Obama as a "talker" rather than a "doer""http://www.nytimes.com/2007/12/20/us/politics/20obama.html?ex=1355806800&en=8385d348acbab84e&ei=5088&partner=rssnyt&emc=rss
Mike Huckabee suddenly looks like a real candidate rather than one of those guys who comes to the debates without any chance of winning. Hiring Ed Rollins makes him look more like a real candidate, and he is suddenly getting a tremendous amount of media exposure, including a profile in The New York Times Magazine. While many topics are addressed, the one I’m most interested in is how Huckabee’s religious views would affect his actions if he was elected considering his reputation for governing as a centrist. Early in the article there is one paragraph which is not very encouraging:
Huckabee's affability and populist economic and social views have sometimes been misinterpreted as a moderate brand of evangelical Christianity. In fact, as he wrote in his book ""Character Makes a Difference,'' he considers liberalism to be a cancer on Christianity. Huckabee is an admirer of the late Jerry Falwell (whose son, Jerry Jr., recently endorsed his candidacy) and subscribes wh

Well we knew this was a long time coming but Congress has finally got it's footing on it's first over-ride of a veto by Bush. This is a bill that has a lot to do with the situtation after hurricane Katrina tore up the Gulf. The bill, formally the Water Resources Development Act, would authorize $3.5 billion in work for the hurricane-striken region of Louisiana and nearly $2 billion in the Everglades restoration. It also icludes billions of dollars more for flood control, restoration and other projects favored by individual lawmakers, which was a key to its passage in Congress.House Votes to Override Bush’s Veto of Water Projects - New York Times

Another veto and this one was concerning water resource projects to which most of the ravaged Gulf Coast would benefit. It does seem like a large cost $23 billion and it is a domestic project and does not have anything to do with the war funding machine, so it is likely to be on the chopping block. In a stunning admission of error, the New York Times has admitted that it should not have given moveon.org a substantial price break to run their General Betray Us ad.
In a column entitled, “Betraying Its Own Best Interests,” New York Times Public Editor (ombudsman) Clark Hoyt wrote that the newspaper, in running the MoveOn.org ad for the “standby rate” of $64,575, violated its own written standards.
“I think the ad violated The Times’s own written standards, and the paper now says that the advertiser got a price break it was not entitled to,” Hoyt wrote.
But, after all, this was too good for the NYT to resist. A radical left wing group who echos the Times ideology, it was just too good to pass up. They don’t regret getting moveon.org’s ad out there at a bargain basement price, they only regret that the cat was let out of the bag and they were caught with their ideological pants down.
Now it’s spin control, and moveon
The ombudsman for The New York Times has responded to the controversy over the MoveOn ad. There have been two major issues–whether MoveOn unfairly received a price break for ideological reasons and whether an ad using language such as “General Betray Us” should have been run at all.
The answer to the first question remains murky. Clark Hoyt, the ombudsman for The New York Times writes that “the paper now says that the advertiser got a price break it was not entitled to.” Later in the article the following explanation is provided:
MoveOn.org paid what is known in the newspaper industry as a standby rate of $64,575 that it should not have received under Times policies. The group should have paid $142,083. The Times had maintained for a week that the standby rate was appropriate, but a company spokeswoman told me late Thursday afternoon that an advertising sales representative made a mistake…
Eli Pariser, the executive director of MoveOn.org, told me t
Once again the media, in this case the New York Times, has been caught with its hand in the political cookie jar. For two weeks they have been defending their actions of not only running a despicable ad for the liberal activist group MoveOn.org but also giving them a huge discount on the cost of the ad. Later when Rudy Giuliani was given the same rate to run a counter ad the left pointed to that as proof of what the New York Times has been claiming. Obviously, they had to give Giuliani the same rate after being caught. I think thats too subtle for some on the left to understand though. However, after two weeks of denials it seems like at the very least the Times violated its own rules and at the worst are, once again, willing accomplices to the left in smearing conservatives. What a shocker. Eli Pariser, the executive director of MoveOn.org, told me that his group called The Times on the Friday before Petraeuss appearance on Capitol Hill and asked for a rush ad in Mondays paper.
What changed, The Times said, was that many more readers started coming to the site from search engines and links on other sites instead of coming directly to NYTimes.com. These indirect readers, unable to get access to articles behind the pay wall and less likely to pay subscription fees than the more loyal direct users, were seen as opportunities for more page views and increased advertising revenue."E' ora di prepararsi anche per i nostri Sole 24 Ore, Corriere e Repubblica (includendo anche il Messaggero Veneto che è anche la mia newsletter/blog
So the New York Times gave MoveOn.org over 50% off the standard rate for their full page ad vilifying General Petraeus. Well anyone thats shocked about the long standing bias of the New York Times stand on your head . Now would one of you lefties like to tell me about the conservative bias of the media? This is where the left starts screaming at the top of their lungs about Fox News. But them having ABC, CBS, NBC, NPR, PBS, CNN etc in their back pocket does not count. When a Democrat starts whining about the conservative bias of the media that just means the media in question is not left leaning enough to suit them. ~RJH Yahoo news article link NY Times criticized for ad attacking PetraeusBy Claudia Parsons Thu Sep 13, 4:00 PM ET An ad criticizing the top U.S. general in Iraq raised charges on Thursday that The New York Times slashed its advertising rates for political reasons -- an accusation denied by the paper. The ad by liberal anti-war group moveon.org ran on Monday, the d
On August 22nd Saul Hansell, of the New York Times, wrote a story called “Misgivings Spoil Plans of Start-Up,” which gave irrelevant misstatements about a man named Armand Rousso, who is a very successful business owner and entrepreneur.
Well, to clarify these misstatements Armand Rousso has responded to provide the real story in its entirety. Hansell said that Rousso had legal problems, however, these problems include one guilty plea in 1999 on something that happened a while back, and isn’t even relevant to his business. Just because you have had a criminal record a long time back doesn’t mean that you can’t become a successful member of society later on. In my opinion that just means that he was able to turn his life around and make something good out of it.
The complete story on the Armand Rousso response to NYT story by Saul Hansell gives a more detailed description of the misstatements by the New York Times story, and Rousso hopes that the Times w

Raw milk drinkers may praise its richer flavor or claim it is more nutritious than pasteurized milk. No matter why they drink it, the demand for it is booming. In 2000, the Organic Pastures Dairy Company in the San Joaquin Valley near Fresno became California’s first raw milk dairy with certified organic pasture land. This year its co-founder, Mark McAfee, expects it to gross $6 million -- up from $4.9 last year.

Statement by Deputy Press Secretary Tony Fratto on New York Times Story on FISA Legislation. Today's New York Times story by James Risen makes the unfounded claim that new FISA legislation has "broadly expanded the government's authority to eavesdrop on the international telephone calls and e-mail messages American citizens without warrants." This is highly misleading.Revolutionary changes in technology have occurred since FISA was enacted in 1978, and those changes have resulted in FISA--contrary to the intent of Congress in 1978--often requiring the government to get a court order to collect information on foreign terrorists and other foreign targets located overseas. The new law makes clear that a court order is not required to conduct surveillance of foreign intelligence targets located overseas. But under FISA, court approval is required for the government to target an individual located in the United States, and nothing in the new law changes that.Congress has recognized there d
In an op-ed piece in the New York Times the author is admitting that we can win in Iraq. Image that? America can win? I thought we had already lost. So, what is going on here? Could it be, as I believe, that with the Democrats inability to end the war and secure America’s defeat that they are now trying to provide cover for the Democrats? By this I mean because the Democrats have failed to deliver on their promise to end the war, the New York Times and the left leaning media will now start to steer the Democrats back into the center. By saying that the war can be won it will minimize the failure of the Democrats to end it, thus saving face. Or could it be their naivety? Now that these writers have been to Iraq they have seen some of the progress and have decided to report it. I believe it is the former. (more…)
The New York Times had a good piece last week that had some particularly interesting things to say. So with the Republican presidential field turned upside down, and a wide-open battle for the party’s nomination unfolding over the next six months, could there suddenly be room for a candidate who opposes the administration’s war policy? That’s what Senator Chuck Hagel is trying to conclude. Mr. Hagel, a Nebraska Republican, has long been among the loudest Iraq critics in his party, a position that he said was “very, very lonely over the last four years.” His conservative voting record has been overshadowed, in the eyes of many faithful Republicans, by his forceful criticism of how Mr. Bush has handled the war. These days, Mr. Hagel is no longer feeling so alone. As he walked across the Capitol, one day after the latest chapter of the Senate war debate ended, he said he is receiving fresh encouragement to consider a presidential candidacy. He intends to study the landscape and
An article was published in the New York Times yesterday, giving a basic discussion about the promise, potenital, and delays of Lithium-ion batteries for automotive use.
Lithium titanate was mentioned, but not any specific battery companies by name. Interestingly they commented that the Tesla roadster carries 6,831 individual cells, and will begin deliveries this fall.
The author also noted that next generation Toyota Prius using Lithium ion batteries would have to be delayed for 6 months due to the lack of readiness of the technology, and also mentioned the Volt reporting that “industry experts” say that car’s batteries wont be ready until 2010.
Although promoting the knowledge to the mainstream, the article really did not tell us anything new.
I just searched for English Language in the Language and Languages section of the New York Times and came up with a list of some interesting articles.
So I thought I would share it here.
