I made it…..to New York City! One small step today, in preparation for one giant leap tomorrow. I estimate from the time I leave for JFK airport, to the time I arrive at Chez Nelson on Moorea, I’ll be in transit a good 20-24 hours (if no delays). Growing up in the Syracuse area one of the highlights of the end of summer was the New York State Fair, which opens today. The Fair provided a bridge from summer vacation to the start of school, and was the place that you could go to see everything from the world's largest pig to big name country and rock musical acts. Now you can add craft beer to the line up.The New York State Brewer’s Association has a booth at the New York State Fair. The group wants to showcase the 59 breweries in the state and educate the public on the economic importance of brewing. The booth is in the Fair's Horticulture Building and will explain the brewing process. In addition to information from breweries, the Madison County Hops Alliance will also have an exhibit.The New York State Fair Commercial Brewing Competition winners will be displayed and free 2-ounce samples of beer will be given to adults. Spitzer has granted George Pataki24-hour-a-day State Police protection, a shockingly expensive security detail that’s never been offered to a former New York governor, The Post has learned. Democrat Spitzer reluctantly agreed to Republican Pataki’s last-minute security request, despite misgivings that such an action could violate the same law that led former state Comptroller Alan Hevesi to plead guilty to a felony, a source close to the new governor said. Hevesi had claimed security concerns justified his using state employees to drive his wife around and run personal errands. Spitzer was also uncertain as to what, if any, threat Pataki might face, and has ordered an investigation to find out. The special security for Pataki could cost taxpayers $20,000 or more a week if it is limited to four round-the-clock State Police officers, who can each earn $80,000 or more a year. It could cost a whole lot more if Pataki receives the far larger securit

This past year the New York State Legislature spent $200 million for member item spending with virtually no accoutability.  It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that vast amounts of money with no accountability equals theft and corruption. A New York state senator was charged yesterday with stealing more than $400,000 in state money appropriated for charities in his district and using it for personal expenses and luxuries for himself and his family. The charges against the senator, Efrain González Jr., a Bronx Democrat, were contained in a new indictment announced by the United States attorney in Manhattan and came four months after he was indicted on charges of stealing $37,000 from a nonprofit organization. The Catholic Hospitals are filing a lawsuit challenging the Constitutionality of New York State closing St. Joseph’s Hospital. I will be rooting for them. The State created the mess the hospitals are in and have no right to arbitrarily decide which hospitals should be closed. It is time to demand an end to socialized medicine. The total debt load for New York State will reach $49.7 billion this year.  That is $3515 for every adult in the State.  Here’s Eliot Spitzer’s thoughts on our state debt: Democrat Eliot Spitzer reiterated on Tuesday that he wouldn’t sign a budget that puts pools of money at the disposal of Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, and Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, without “a public vetting of where every dollar goes.” Transparency is great.  It is needed, but that alone is not enough.  Along with transparency we need a large dose of fiscal responsibility.  New York State has added about $4 billion in new debt this past year.  The debt has doubled since 1993. The party last all four major statewide races in landslides in 2006 (even won where the Democrat was sinking in scandal). They lost three House seats and nearly lost three more. They lost three State Assembly seats, where they were already a super minority, and lost a State Senate seat in Westchester. They narrowly kept a Queen State Senate seat where Republican Serphin Maltese, in office since 1986, won by a mere 783 votes (and that with the Democratic party in the area endorsing him.)
