New York Mets-Los Angeles Dodgers: Some Guts, Little Glory for Oliver Perez in 5-1 Loss
Cinco de mayo was not very kind to Mexico native Oliver Perez.Perez gave up five runs, four of them coming on three Los Angeles Dodgers’ homeruns en route to the defeat. To add injury to insult, Perez took a line drive to the mid section early to the game.Oliver was able to stay in the game and looked gutsy at times, only walking two batters and challenging the Dodger hitters, but three of those challenges went beyond the fences at Dodger Stadium, including Rafael Furcal’s lead-off shot on an 0-2 pitch and Blake DeWitt’s first career dinger.Perez gave as much effort as he could to silence teammate Billy Wagner who challenged Oliver to “step up” after his last performance of one and two-thirds innings. In addition to his six innings of work, Perez covered first base well, including

      New York Mets’ Updates 4/12/08
Pedro who?Nelson Figueroa gave up two runs over six innings and struck out six as the Mets’ won their third in a row, defeating the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2 on Friday evening. While Figueroa’s feel-good story of the return to his native New York to pitch in front of family and friends, along with three innings of perfect relief from Joe Smith, Aaron Heilman (yes, Aaron Heilman), and Billy Wagner, and the continued hot hitting of Angel Pagan and Carlos Delgado gave Met fans plenty of highlights, there was one glaring lowlight.Jose Reyes had to be removed from the game with tightness in his left hamstring. Apparently the “bad weather” excuse doesn’t only apply to veterans, but to 24-year olds as well.Reyes will likely be out of the lineup on Saturday, with the good ol’ “day-to-day

New York Mets 7 - Florida Marlins 2
...This comes from Marty Noble @ Mets.com:CLICK HERE FOR A COMPLETE BOXSCOREIn his ongoing effort to de-emphasize the significance of his debut with the Mets and defuse at least some of the stir it had produced, Johan Santana said -- almost vowed -- he would do "nothing crazy" and "nothing special." Nor would he try to be a hero. And he was true to his word as the Mets began their 2008 season. In the end, what Santana did Monday afternoon against the Marlins wasn't particularly special or at all crazy. And heroic didn't apply either. He was merely effective and, more importantly, successful. His first performance in a new league with his new team was efficient and sufficient and, at the same time, fully satisfying for all involved in it. The most expensive pitcher in the game accomplished

New York Mets: 2006 Baseball Betting Season Preview
One word that comes to mind when thinking about the Mets is "bust". I guess a close second would be "loser". If you have ever bet on the Mets, then you would know that they have lost their backers 54 units over the past 4 seasons. Last year year was the first time in the past 4 season for them post an above 500 record. Pedro Martinez had a lot to do with that.In fact, they were overvalued as a favorite. The New York Mets are from a big market and whenever they are favorite, expect the odds to be stacked against you as the bettor. Unlike the Red Sox and Yankees, the Mets do not win their backers money as a big favorite. Whenever you are overvalued as a favorite, this tends to be most true when looking at the information about them on the road. The Mets as a favorite on the road were 15-16 in 2005, losing their backers 7 units. In fact they are a dismal 22-27 on the road as a favorite over the past two seasons. A big market club like the Mets will always likely be too overvalued as a favo

Can the Mets Finally Get to the World Series? New York Mets 2007 Season Preview...
In 2006, Omar Minaya with the blessing of the Wilpon family went out and built a team constructed for the World Series. The Mets were often looked at as the second team in the Big Apple, but due to their impressive season, they stirred up excitement in the city that never sleeps. However, in the NLCS, but lost out to a St. Louis team that won only 83 games. Although, the Mets have youngsters David Wright and Jose Reyes becoming stars, they are a team pretty much built to win now. With the contract extension recently given to Willie Randolph, he's now got the security to lead the Mets corps for the near future. Right now, the pitching situation is one that is of most concern. Ace Pedro Martinez on the shelf until summer, the Mets have two men in middle age in the rotation, and the rest of the pitching staff is unsettled. Although the pitching situation is shaky, the Mets probably have the best offense in the National League and that alone should get the team many wins. The Mets also

Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets: Gettin' Philthy
Philadelphia and New York fans rejoice. You now have some more trash to talk because this off season the Philadelphia Phillies and New York Mets are trying to catch up with the Eagles, Giants and Flyers, Rangers rivalries."We're the team to beat. I can't put it any other way. Look at our team. Look at what we're bringing and look at the improvements we've made. Then look at the rest of the division." -Jimmy Rollins, Phillies shortstop"What did they win last year?" -Carlos Beltran, Mets outfielderAnd now the latest shot..."We can't sell tickets to Mets fans anymore. I don't want them in our place. They're our rivals. I want to beat them more than anybody." -Brett Myers, Phillies starting pitcher"Thank God! I'm so relieved." -Brett Myers wifeOkay, I might have made that last one up. But it's still great to see a new rivalry brewing in the rather blah National League. Now we are one bean ball away from some real heavy duty stuff.Mark your calendar for April 9th for the Mets ho
