A new survey shows that venture capital investment – the stuff that fuels technology innovation – is growing in parts of the country where it has been largely unapparent. The survey from the National Venture Capital Association, based on data provided by Thomson Financial, found that while Silicon Valley remains the hotbed of seed capital, other regions are seeing it grow more quickly. In New Mexico, for instance, venture capitalists put $128 million into 21 companies in 2007, the survey found. Compared to the investments made a decade ago, that’s an increase of 600 percent in the number of companies and of 375 percent in the amount of funding.Or take Pittsburgh, the second fastest-growing region of the country in terms of venture capital investments over the last decade. Gov. Bill Richardson (D) has rejected a pardon request from one Jimmie Rae Gordon Jr., who was sentenced to 30 years in prison for 11 counts of fraud over $2,500 and four counts of being an unlicensed broker who sold unregistered securities and made fraudulent offers to sell securities. The request was denied because of "strong opposition" by victims of the fraud and after "carefully considering Mr. Gordon's conduct while in prison." See story here.
The judge who sentenced a decorated Marine and Iraq veteran to two years in prison and four years of probation says he will not reconsider the sentence, despite a recent request by Governor Bill Richardson (D) that he do so. Elton John Richard pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in January after initially being charged with murder. He fatally shot a would-be burglar after chasing him several blocks. District Judge Albert "Pat" Murdoch says that he expects Richard’s attorney to apply for executive clemency sometime next week. A spokesman for Richardson says the Governor is "prepared to consider executive clemency for Elton John Richard. However, he has not received [a] formal request from the family or Richard’s attorney.” Sen. Pete Domenici (R) has also called for a full pardon
Gov. Bill Richardson is urging a state district judge to re-evaluate the sentence of a decorated Marine and Iraq war veteran, Elton John Richard, who shot and killed a would-be burglar. Richardson's office has described Richard's two-year sentence as harsh. In addition, Judge Pat Murdoch ordered Richard to pay restitution of $500 a month for four years. If the sentence is not reconsidered, Governor Richardson says that he is willing to consider a request for executive clemency. Other details here.

Canadian Army
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yo
I'm sorry I'm a bit delayed in posting about the Blog America Tour but in all honesty much of the travel was through areas that had no wireless reception. Yes, irritating. Obviously the same with cell receiption. So we fell a little behind on keeping-up with our trip. But as I mentioned in the last update of our tour, we drove--and survived--an all-nighter from Dallas, Texas to Albuquerque, New Mexico. I'll be honest in saying none of us were either looking or feeling our best when we finally arrived at our destination at 5am. And to make things worse we had to brush our teeth at a Super Wal-mart. We've been having a great time on our trip but last night was a little rough.
Needless to say we were eager to meet Postie Courtney (http://travelingthoughts.com)...and grab a LARGE cup of coffee. Our venue of choice: Flying Star. It's a great little place with a fun atmosphere and yummy food -- just what we needed. And, o
Airports for space crafts were part of a dreams of fantasy. Well somethings come true and this is one of them. The New Mexico Spaceport Authority recently unveiled designs for the world’s first public launching and landing site for space vehicles, Spaceport America. This is where the Virgin Galactic will take off! Located in the middle of New Mexico desert the spaceport is to include a passenger terminal and a hangar big enough for seven apace crafts. UK architecture firm Foster + Partners and San Francisco-based engineering shop URS have been working on the project and is expected to complete it in 2010 costing a cool $225 million. So pack your bags and get ready for the vacation of a lifetime. Next destination: Mars. I wonder what the prizes are like to travel to space? Check out an artist’s impression of the interiors after the jump.

R. Dean Taylor remains one of the most underrated acts ever to record under the Motown aegis. After first proving his mettle as a chart-topping staff songwriter, his own single "Indiana Wants Me" was a Top Five smash in 1970, becoming one of the label's first major crossover hits performed by a white artist. Born Richard Dean Taylor in Toronto in 1939, he began his singing career at age 12, performing at local country showcases before embracing rock & roll. In 1960, he signed to the Toronto-based Audiomaster label to cut his rockabilly-flavored debut single, "At the High School Dance," supported via appearances on the CBC as well as a brief tour of the northeastern U.S. Taylor relocated to New York City in 1962, signing to the Amy/Mala label to cut a pair of singles, "I'll Remember" and the novelty effort "We Fell in Love as We Tangoed." Neither attracted much notice, and the following year a friend in the Detroit region recommended he audition for Berry Gordy's up-and-coming Motown
If you haven't been living under a rock for the past 12 months, you've probably heard all the doom and gloom predictions about the housing bubble bursting, home value averages slumping and the real estate market taking a big hit. Guess what? They've a bit over-exaggerated. Looking at the real estate market nationally, it is very true that it's definitely over the boom of the past few years, however, most areas are still fairing well. When you're considering buying or selling a home, the national median home value isn't going to do you much good (but if you're curious, it's at about $221,900). Real estate is an investment, so it is important to move somewhere your home value is sure to appreciate. The best way to see where home value prices are going in a given area is to examine past home value and sales trends, the economy, population, job opportunities, unemployment rates and attraction of that area.New Mexico (capital city: Santa Fe) is one area that has seen quite a bit of a
Ladies & Gentlemen, I have the story of the year for this humble little blog and website called HuntingLife.com. Several months ago Ben Nicholson was looking for some information on the Valles Caldera Wildlife Management area in New Mexico and he ran a search on google and up popped my article on how to apply for tags for the opportunity to hunt elk there. About that same time we also had a post about the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation holding a raffle for the New Mexico Governors tag for elk. Ben followed the link to the Valles Caldera and learned that he had missed the deadline and on a whim came back to HuntingLife.com and decided to buy a raffle ticket for the that RMEF raffle for the tag.HE WON!I got a comment on that post just after the raffle was finished and Ben was looking to sell the tag. New Mexico is the only state that allows you to transfer the tag if you have purchased it and/or won the tag. He asked me if he should put it up on ebay and I thought about it for two seconds

The recent story that we wrote about regarding the late James Doohan, famous for playing Star Treks Scotty, in which his ashes was sent up in space briefly and was then lost, has now been found.
The rocket, which had been launched from Spaceport America in southern New Mexico, had shot Doohan’s ashes in space for a 4 minute suborbital flight was supposed to fall back to earth. The problem is the returning rocket had falling back to earth, but as they landed in an Andres Mountains on White Sands Missile Range, they was not very easily accessible which is the reason why it had taken them time to locate the rocket.
James Doohan, was one of 202 people who were sealed in containers and blasted in to space, the containers which contain their ashes, will now be given back to their families with a plaque stated that they have been on a space flight.

The New Mexico House passed a bill by a vote of 35 to 20 over the weekend that sponsors claim will cut drunk driving in the state. The answer: eliminate the sales of single cans and bottles of beer from ice filled bins at stores check out counters.Rep. Miguel P. Garcia proposed the legislation because he says the easy access to cold beer encourages people to drink and drive. Rep. Garcia had originally proposed a ban on all beer sales at convenience stores after a crash in November that killed six people. The proposal now moves to the New Mexico Senate. Some have questioned the ban on single beer sales, saying that if the law is passed someone wanting beer will just buy a six pack instead.
Does anyone else see a huge problem with this? Some of the people who these things are targeting are drunk out of their mind, and we’re going to help them by giving them advice from a talking urinal. Imagine going into one of these bathrooms to find a drunk trying to talk back to the magical urinal. You do not help a drunk by giving him a talking inanimate object. Especially a urinal.
Forget about drunks. If I walk into that bathroom completely sober and I hear the urinal talking to me when I start going, that’s it! It’s a good thing I’m at the urinal, because it would scare the piss out of me.
With love,
Steve. talking urinal, alcohol, New Mexico
In the following press release from Albuquerque on January 16, 2007, New Mexico Attorney General Gary King announced a plea agreement in the state’s fraud case against Angelo Garcia, the Albuquerque businessman charged with defrauding a group of senior citizens out of nearly one-point-four million dollars. According to the agreement, Garcia admitted his guilt in a series of securities fraud counts and one count of racketeering. He now faces up to 33 years imprisonment at sentencing. Restitution to the elderly victims is also ordered under terms of the agreement. Attorney General King says, “We are pleased by this outcome so that Angelo Garcia will pay for his crimes. Those who victimize our state’s elder citizens will be caught and they will be punished.” The senior citizen investors had been falsely led to believe their money, in some cases their life savings, was being invested in various housing projects. Santa Fe, New Mexico - The state has not issued a new license for a payday loan company since a moratorium was imposed in March, and will not issue a new license until the Legislature acts to change the laws regulating that industry, said Edward J. Albuquerque, New Mexico - Gov. Bill Richardson and Attorney General Patricia Madrid today announced new regulations aimed at curbing the predatory loan business in New Mexico. The regulations, which target payday lenders, would go into effect July 16 after a public comment period in June.
I am REALLY impressed with Bill Richardson's announcement that he and Albuquerque Mayor Chavez snagged the Tesla electric car factory and its 400 jobs for Albq.! That's just huge. In a time of declining manufacturing in most places, we're adding factory jobs in New Mexico! And Bill Richardson deserves some of the credit...he has been tireless in working on offering attractive packages for industry to locate or stay here. Eclipse Aviation, maker of the first Very Light Jet, now employs 1,000, with more on the way. In addition, Utilicraft is going to start building their "overnight express freight feeder" aircraft in Albq. next year.I see Richardson as being able to point to all of this during the campaign...how many jobs has Clinton, Obama, or Edwards brought to their states? Hmmmmm- MCDetails on Tesla Motors factory announcement here
