Google introduces new Media Server application
In what appears to be their first attempt at invading people’s living rooms, Google has introduced its latest Windows app: Google Media Server. This tool works alongside Google Desktop to locate media files on your computer and on the web (most notably YouTube), making them available across a standard home network to UPnP compatible devices such as the PlayStation 3. During these weeks I have learned a lot about writing copy, picture cropping and using a content management system.Although I consider myself more than competant with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Adobe Photoshop Elements (used at Sky, I have been taught some nice tricks involving creating borders. There are many picture sizes and it is important to attach the right ones!I have also learned how to write headlines and keep them short. This is a relatively new skill for me, but one I am now confident with. I am able to keep banner headlines to a certain length. Old and New Media Towards Society Change
New media have invaded the internet and have created buzz in the mass media. Blogs and other social media became platforms where ordinary citizens can freely express their thoughts and could be given privilege to deliver news and other pertinent information for the public. In the event such as the Interfaith Rally held in Ayala, Makati City, bloggers and traditional broadcast media joined together for one purpose — to gather Information. Of course, the broadcast media are the most visible on the scene with their huge OB vans, broadcast stage, field reporters and pool of cameramen patrolling the place and covering every activities. So what is this media hyped all about? Its a rally organized that talked about an anomaly involving our topmost politicians and personalities in the government.

Been working out some concepts that have been hitting me and gradually coming together...it is still very rough..I tried a few years ago to map time as intervals and corrolate it directly to a person moving in a space. It was intriguing, but ultimately to the artist and semi-scientist in me it was ultimately a dead end. Why? The measure was ultimately arbitrary as one cannot set something spatially that is a corollate between space, location and time in grid space and real space for the reason that the person will move at different speeds at different times and people move in different cadences and speeds relative to others anyway.So...What if the corrolate is instead a sort of non-euclidain geometry....a spherical topology in a sense of what is experienced in time and space and that can

Newspaper Publishers Debate Outsourcing Journalism and New Media
Apparently a blog by Will Sullivan about how high-tech freelancers are being hired to fill in gaps in media content creation and publishing in the newspaper industry has been causing quite a bit of debate.Sullivan argues that a lack of available talent and a mandate for newspaper publishers and others in the publishing industry to continually pump out new media content has created a need that outsourcing to freelancers fills beautifully. He lists several specific duties a high-tech freelancer can easily and inexpensively fill (ie. flash development, design, and data projects, as well as the many online loci where companies and workers alike can find one another.Whether it's journalism you're in or any other field, the arguments on both sides are compelling and well worth reviewing. New Media Vs. Old Media? Part 2
Adherence to the Status Quo: This is another filter used by the old media that hinders the education of the public. When was the last time that you heard, saw, or read a news report in which a "regular" person was asked to weigh in on the issues of the day? Probably been awhile huh? Recall the old-fashioned "man on the street" interview? Why don't we hear from these people who are, after all, just like us? Do not regular people have something to say? Or is it perhaps that some regular folks might say something that the O.M. doesn't want anyone to hear. This is not a question of paranoia or conspiracy; it is a matter of fact. The very day after 9/11, the Bushists had the gall to tell the American people to go shopping, to go to work, to go right on living life as if nothing terrible had just happened the day before. What did the O.M. do? They carried the message just as though this was the best advice ever.Oh certainly the editorial pages were full of hand-wringing over "why they hate u

New Media Vs. Old Media? Part 1
It has been a couple of years since the old media was forced to look at the impact that the new media was having on the former's bread and butter. Despite my hopes, there are still those who believe that the papers and the t.v. stations have the market cornered for reliability. This is thanks in part to the way that the old media framed the issue; as a debate pitting old on one side, and new on the other. This either-or mentality is a perfect fit for an industry that is experiencing serious competition for the first time. Naturally, it also makes for a bold headline, but is it true? Of course not! The biggest difference between new media and old is the system of filters used to bring the news to us.To clarify for those of you who are not familiar with the process (thanks Journalism 101!); most major networks and newspapers are not primary news sources. They often have deep resources by way of reporters and editors - though many have made significant cut-backs lately - but it is rel

Future Shock (Orson Welles Intro)What is the complex relationship between time, technology and culture? Is something of another era that still resonates a mirror, a portal, a paralellism, an echo of the present (as tenuous and ephemeral as present, now and new are of course in their near ghostflesh in the face of contexts, time and progression)?W&S 030 - Video Moroso - V-V-V-V-V-VCRWhat is appropriation and sampling in relation to archaeology? How are artifacts colored by their time....its semiotics....its cliche's....and how it mutates in the rear view ? Spice Polaroid VictoriaWhat falls away like booster rockets on space flights, flash then dead and away in segmented time from a now? What is the progression and is it in pieces or is it more mote by mote, atom by atom erasure into the "now" skidding along into its ephemerality and end? How does this relate to dissent? To protest? To its images in time? What of today, july 18th is already disassemblin

New Media Nouveaux Conference Exceeds Expectations
The New Media Nouveaux Conference has been a magnificent catalyst for conversation.Geoff Livingston gave an insightful introduction to new media - citing case studies from his upcoming book, Now Is Gone. So yes, this stuff matters. The main focus of Geoff’s talk was how pervasive social media is on our society and how it enforces a culture of transparency and honesty. It is an opportunity to engage your “community” (Geoff doesn’t believe in the w

Joe Anthony Backs Down: Obama 1: New Media 0TechPresident has pretty much held this story in its hands:http://hammer2006.blogspot.com/2007/05/joe-anthony-wont-sue-techpresident-also.htmlWell, at least we know that Joe Anthony is not a bully.I just hope that he's not a little guy getting stepped on.And is this the kind of President we really want for our country? We already have one President, the current one, who many people feel has gone considerably too far.One is enough.Bloggers of the World, Unite! The blogosphere (from what I read) while not unanimous seemed to be strongly behind Joe Anthony. But that doesn't seem to matter.I guess a few moments of personal contact from Obama is all it takes to end this.Yeah, that's worth a couple of years of effort.Years of highly productive effort.Years of effort to get YOU elected president.Well, isn't that nice that you stand behind your staff. And there are so many unanswered questions.http://hammer2006.blogspot.com/2007/05/how-joe-anthony-sc

Call for Papers: Meta-Materiality: Games, New Media, The Digital
Refractory: a Journal of Entertainment Media is a refereed, peer-reviewed, e-journal that explores the diverging and intersecting aspects of current and past entertainment media. The journal is published by the Cinema Studies Program, School of Culture and Communication, University of Melbourne.http://www.refractory.unimelb.edu.au/ISSUE THEME: Meta-Materiality: Games, New Media, The DigitalLaunching as it did in 2002, The Refractory arrived on the scene just in time for its titular metaphor to get complicated, with the arrival of 'metamaterials' – artificial composites with negative refractive indices . When a wave phenomenon such as light travels between media, it changes speed and bends relative to the normal: refraction. But with just the right metamaterial, the positive refraction can be negated. The wave finds its stride – the straw in the glass looks straight – total refraction. This special issue of The Refractory aims to assess its central metaphor in relationship to ga

Politics & New Media: The Long Tail of PoliticsExcerpt:"The first flush of this new participation is being played out in sites built for entertainment, social interaction and hobby sharing. However, the potential is being swiftly explored by business. Google has picked up YouTube and Rupert Murdoch has picked up MySpace. ‘Wikinomics’ is the hottest buzzword in business but there is a pittance of debate about its potential for improving civil governance.Recognising the significance of the Long Tail for politics, in July last year Wikipedia’s Jimmy Wales launched Campaigns Wikia writing in his opening blog, ‘If broadcast media brought us broadcast politics, then participatory media will bring us participatory politics.’"http://www.newmatilda.com/home/articledetailmagazine.asp?ArticleID=2171&HomepageID=189Alex

New Media for Doctors and Healthcare Geeks - The Medical Blog Network
I was very excited to find Healthvoices.com: The Medical Blog Network this morning through Technorati (I couldn't sleep and it was either browse Technorati or play Civ IV for the umpteenth time). As I've alluded to in previous posts, the healthcare field can be a lonely place for a geek because so few people in it understand what it is their IT and IS support are trying to tell them most of the time. (In my situation I am doubly-damned because my primary customers are the Sales and Marketing department and, to a lesser extent, the Planning and Marketing Support group. Although they're my favorite people within my company to work with, well, suffice it to say that from a geek's perspective there's a reason those organizations' initials are S&M and PMS.) At any rate, it's nice to see that there's an on-line community and blog aggregator for members of the medical profession. I'm thrilled that there are doctors, nurses, and other folks who are passionate about the health
