Russia & Iran: Avoiding a New Cold War
Earlier this year, I mentioned that pressure needed to be brought down on Russia's support of Iran's nuclear project so that Iran would not be encouraged to ignore Western political pressure. But there is another reason as well. CNN reported today that a key Israeli government member gave Iran an explicit warning of ceasing their nuke program, or else Israel will attack. If things stay on the sam

McCain and “a New Cold War”
In “Newsweek,” Fareed Zakaria on Sen. McCain’s “radical” foreign policy: On March 26, McCain gave a speech on foreign policy in Los Angeles that was billed as his most comprehensive statement on the subject. It contained within it the most radical idea put forward by a major candidate for the presidency in 25 years. Yet almost [...]

New Cold Boot Device Developed To Steal Passwords From Disk Encryption Protected Computers
The Register reports that IntelGuardians, a penetration‑testing firm, has built up on the Princeton research that showed how to extract encryption keys from computer memory, RAM.  They’ve created a device and named it “DaisyDukes,” and it plugs into a computer via the USB port.  No word on whether the device comes encased in cut‑offs.  It’s still in beta mode, so anything could happen…  Although, truth be told, I’m guessing they’ve christened the device after the TV character because the bombshell was able to wangle her way into pretty much anything.   Based on what I’ve read, it sounds like the new device is very similar to the device the Princeton researchers had showcased last month.  IntelGuardians has a spin on the original device and

There is No Evidence that New Cold Meds Work
According to federal health officials, there is only limited evidence that new formulations of over-the-counter cold medications actually relieve nasal congestion. Studies of phenylephrine, which was recently added to many cold medicines, are all small, poorly designed and decades-old. Half of the few studies of phenylephrine did not even show significant improvement in nasal airflow. According to University of Florida Professor Leslie Hendeles, the new formulations "aren't any better than taking nothing."

News Round-up: World Economy Slums - Do We Need a New Cold War?
Have you noticed too the slowly but steadily escalating posturing between Russia and the US... ?I guess it all started with their stand-off on the war in Iraq. They certainly did not agree on Iran, with the US trying to force Iran out of their nuclear ambitions while Moscow supplied fuel for the Russian-built Bushehr nuclear plant. Then there was an indirect standoff during the Orange revolution in the Ukraine, taking one more nation away from Putin's area of influence. Add their differences about Kosovo's independence, the recent integration of ex-USSR satellite states into the EU (with the alleged Russian-stoked unrest in Estonia), etcetera etcetera, and you have a recipe for problems.Even more worrying is the recent escalation of direct posturing. NATO wants to install new radar installations in countries which used to be direct USSR allies. Russia says: "Ahaaa" and tests a new long range missile and re-activates its long range spy plane flights, which alerted the UK to scramble R

Condi Rice: No new Cold War with Russia
When I joined the USAF in the early ‘70’s the United States and the Soviet Union were both bristling with literally thousands of nuclear warheads on a hair trigger. Life as we knew it was dependent on a concept known as Mutually Assured Destruction, called MAD, which meant that if one side or the other launched a first strike they were assured there would be an equal retaliatory strike. As a kid they would show us films of atomic and nuclear explosions as part of our “duck and cover” drills in school. I never questioned the logic of my desk being able to save me from atomic holocaust. That was just the world we grew up in. My children, all in their 20’s now, never had the duck and cover drills and can hardly understand how we so blithely accepted the premise of it. I for one do not want to go back to the bad old Cold War days. I spent several years as a technician on our countries main line of nuclear deterrence; the Minuteman II missile system. And trust me when I say the thought

Arab Street Yearns for New Cold WarIn this Article from Arab News Network you get the impression the Arab Street is looking forward to a renewed adversarial relationship between USA and Russia. Back to the Cold War? By: Mahmoud Labadi After a long estival sleep, it seems that the Russian bear is waking up in this hibernal season. Russian President Vladimir Putin is getting alert once again. Icy blat from Putin hints at new cold war (By GERARD BAKER) IF THE US ADMINISTRATION didn’t have enough to worry about, given the current state of the world, it spent much of the weekend wondering whether Moscow had declared another Cold War. On Saturday President Putin delivered the most aggressive verbal assault on the US and its European allies that a Russian leader has uttered since the Cold War ended 16 years ago. In a speech to the annual Munich Security Conference that evoked memories of the days when the two superpowers threatened to wipe each other and much of the world off the map, Putin attacked what he called the “illegitimate” US foreign policy of the last few years. In unusually brusque and undiplomatic language, he said the US had “overstepped its boundaries in every sphere”, had fuelled a new nuclear arms race and was aggressively destabilising the Middle East. This was more than just another familiar, if blunt, recitation of the supposed crimes
