Yesterday was the annual Regent Square Neighborhood Yard Sale, and the weather was fine and the competition fierce. I put on my comfiest walking shoes, hooded sweatshirt and jacket to protect against the morning damp and parked in a central location, so carting treasures might be just a bit easier. With this good early start in the morning, you'd think I'd have been alone in my quest. Ah, but a hom

Parents can get so absorbed in the tasks they do everyday that they fail to spend quality time with their kids. They turn to bowling in neighborhood alleys because this environment is low key and far away from the rush that is going on in the world just outside its doors. A bowling alley can be a noisy place but one that is filled with children who have a chance to be competitive with parents. Som

*I know this looks like a paid ad, but it isn't! LOL*About two months ago my husband and I were discussing the cost of groceries in the many different area's of the country where we have lived and/or vacationed. Once I get a wild hair idea I usually run with it so I found myself setting up an excel spreadsheet of 40 'typical' or 'easy to find' items and then painstakingly searching for grocery stores in different parts of the county and then to find their online ads and finally, to jot down and compare prices. I never did find a site that did my work for me, so after I got three different stores in 3 different cities/states I called it 'good enough' and was able to let that crazy thought process go. (Yes I do odd things like this... it's probably not surprising I actually liked school

It's been awhile since I posted about The Residence at Park Avenue, one of my favorite townhouse communities on the West Bank of New Orleans. Boy, has the market changed! Back in January, there were only 3 available units for sale. Since the last sale in this gem of a neighborhood was in 2006, it looked like a great buying opportunity for some lucky somebody. Well, now there are 9 available units, including 3 that are brand new construction. At least one of the available units has been discounted over $30,000 since the initial listing! Priced from the low $300s to the upper $500s, there are more choices available to buyers than since the community was initially developed in 2003. Now is the time to consider living

Watching the recent activity on my previous posts, it seems that lots of folks are interested in the Barkley Estates sales information, so I thought it would be a good time to do a neighborhood update. So my printer is still not...well printing because I did not know that I needed a USB cord to make this work and of course it was not included in the box. So tomorrow I will be heading to the Apple Store to get one and rectify this situation since Best Buy thinks $30 for a cord is "reasonable." But dad did replace the string on the light in my closet, so I no longer have to use a flashlight when digging for clothes. So that is a plus. And even though I did a 4.5 mile walk this morning, I decided to walk back from Best Buy (but with a Bobtail smoothie to make it manageable) and found the below billboard. Actually Ryan and I saw it last night and found it hilarious, but my Baby Buddha needed to get home and in the fridge so I couldn't take a picture of it then. I find it amusing, mostly beca

As mentioned before, I grew up in the country. Our nearest neighbors had an egg farm. They were about 1/4 mile away, so it wasn't noisy, and I can't remember there ever being an odor problem. They were good neighbors, and we always had fresh eggs. I worked for some of those eggs, now and again. This was in the old days of egg farming, so the chickens lived in large, multi-floor barns, with lots of boxes built in for laying. Each large flock had the run of an entire floor of the barn, making that one coop. There was one rooster in each coop, apparently to induce the hens into greater fecunditiy.
Harvesting the eggs was interesting: I would grab a round, plastic-coated wire basket from a stack near the door, then slip into the coop and start walking up and down the aisles, checkin

The Hamptons in Aliso Viejo is a neighborhood of detached condos that was built right around the bottom of the 1990s real estate downturn in Orange County. The original owners paid anywhere from about $145,000 to $175,000 to buy in when these properties were offered new.The upsides of the tract include the fact that many of the houses are visually appealing from the exterior, and they feel like single family homes even though they are officially classified as detached condos.Downsides are the lack of driveways, and the development's narrow streets; typical Aliso Viejo packed-in feel as well in parts. And, the address numbering system is a joke (what is with the 1 Ryley Ct #15 thing?) . We've actually asked real estate agents before about this, and some aren't even sure what the deal is, ot

I just wrote an article for the Middle East Times on recent developments in Syria. You can read the whole piece here . Here is an excerpt: Syria has been regularly popping up in the news. In fact, recent events point to the importance of that country for the future of the Middle East. Syria's political situation may indeed have an important impact on a few countries: first of course Lebanon, second Iraq, third Israel, and finally Iran. First, one should not underestimate Syria's potential for creating...(read more)

The following information was sent from Captain Golding of the CMPD South Division:At approximately 1:30 pm, a burglary occurred on Providence Country Club Drive. The burglars first broke into the resident's SUV which was parked at Providence Country Club. The burglars took the garage door opener and some bills from the vehicle. The suspects were able to get the victim's address from one of the bills and went to the victim's residence and used the victim's garage door opener to gain entry to his house. Meanwhile, the victim had reached the first green when he noticed his dog in the yard. Since the victim had not left his dog outside, he went to check on his house. He saw the burglars’ van parked in his driveway with the engine running and he could see the burglars in his house. The victim

When people call me, typically one of the first requests they make is for a house in a "nice" neighborhood. And this makes sense to want a neighborhood that is safe and enjoyable. But there are some benefits to buying real estate in the rough part of town or on the wrong side of the tracks. This article highlights some of them.- There is less worry of your neighborhood going downhill because it is already downhill. Good neighborhoods can get bad and bad neighborhoods can get better. Since the price usually reflects the current condition, buying in a neighborhood that has room for improvement might be a good idea.- If you are buying a rental, you usually get better cash flow in rough neighborhoods. If you are renting your property, there are more renters and they are more long term. It's di

La Vista is a 280-unit condo neighborhood in Laguna Niguel, located near El Niguel Country Club and Laguna Niguel Racquet Club. The units were built as apartments in 1989 and later converted to condos during the boom.Obviously, the timing was bad, and we're assuming that more than a few investors/speculators bought in considering there are currently 18 properties up for sale (or 6.42% of the entire neighborhood). And, a bunch are also up for rent, though there is certainly some overlap as a few of the same units are probably up for both sale and rent.30902 Clubhouse Drive #27C is one of those seeking renters and is asking $1,695. It has 2 bedrooms and 2 baths, and is about 1,100 square feet. If we were to apply a GRM of 120, the property is worth about $203,400 for a cashflow investor. The

By Gabriel Gache, Science News EditorMarch 25, SoftpediaMore than 42 years ago, Kenneth Greisen from Cornell University, Grorgiy Zatsepin and Vadim Kuzmin from Mascow Lebedev Institute of Physics independently predicted that cosmic rays emitted throughout the universe would never hit the Earth at their full strength due to collision with the Cosmic Microwave Background, remnant of the Big Bang event that led to the birth of the universe. This is called Greisen-Zatsepin-Kuzmin (GZK) suppression of ultrahigh-energy cosmic rays. Now, University of Utah's High-Resolution Fly's Eye cosmic ray observatory studies the GZK limit for energetic particles originating in remote areas of the universe. The basic idea is that cosmic rays pack energy much higher than the GZK limit during emission, however,

As my neighborhood is now overrun with heterosexual women who have been abusing fertility treatments (seriously, how many perimenopausal women are squeezing out twins?), I often miss the various on-street tragedies of the American gayborhood.I did overhear this today on the street...which made me think that camp is back on the rise:"You know that's all well and good for a thirteen-year-old girl, but for Christ's Sake. He's fifty. We need to stage an intervention."If only I had intercepted this snippet sooner.

I was also standing next to a running motorcycles (not a scooter) and it was left unattended the entire five minutes I was waiting. I did think for a moment it would be fun to hop on and take off. Although, I've never been on a motorcycle before but it can't be much harder than a bicycle, right?A little boy, about 10, came up to me while I was waiting and said, "Hi!" I said, "hi" back and then he just stood there so I added, "How are you?" He shrugged his shoulders and walked off saying, "mol-lah-yo." A Korean phrase I know well which translates to "I don't know. If you are stationed at NAS JRB New Orleans in Belle Chasse, your commute time will be approximately 20-30 minutes. Within a short distance of Bent Tree Estates you will find plenty of retail shopping and dining. Or, travel south just 6 short miles to the Jean Lafitte National Park Barataria Preserve for a day in the great outdoors.
A Starbucks was set to open on Central Avenue near UNM until an exhaust-weary neighborhood group stepped forward - New Mexico Business Weekly:: "The Salvation Army and a drive-up window are at the heart of a battle between the city, a developer and a neighborhood association. I wonder how many of us here in northwest Florida, specifically, Tallahassee, have lived in the same neighborhood for many years, or at least long enough to observe the process of growth that occurs in neighborhoods. When you plant a garden, it is a rewarding experience to observe the baby plants shoot up out of the soil, pass [...]
Hey everybody. There's a new kid on the blog-block. Case is a friend of mine, who happens to have a small predatory animal (aka teething son) a little older than my own Liler'E. He recently started blogging, and so far I've enjoyed his humor. Here are some excerpts. On failed attempts at reverse psychology:#7) "Chase, here's the sharpies, there's the dining room wall. Go be Picaso."#4) "Is that the furthest you can pull the tissue paper off the roll?Go for it! Pretend you're in Cirque du Soleil."#1) "Go play hide and seek with Mommy & Daddy's passports."On being ignored by Queen Elizabeth:It was a neat experience to see a famous person so close up, and it really made Kani's day. I enjoyed it too...the only true royalty that I'd ever been close to before was Andy Rooney on 43rd &
Using the link below you can see a 10 minute video demonstration of the functioning of Local Eyes. Using a neighborhood watch scenario, I captured screen shots of the creation of a Gizmo from scratch using pictures for each menu choice the user will be asked to choose from. Then I filmed my phone as I used it to report on a suspicious truck in my neighborhood. Finally I went back to screen shots to show how that report came in within a second or so and showed my location retrieved from my bluetooth-connected pocket GPS device as I made the report, showed the photo I snapped on my phone of the suspicious truck and finally, showed how the coordinator can directly communicate back to the reporter with directives to help keep the mobile community cohesive and informed.Click on the YouTube logo
They say you are over the hill when you turn 50, but I could have sworn my life took a downward turn after my 30th birthday. My husband, Steve, and I had been fighting constantly, our sex life was none existent and to top everything off, my best friend Jessica had just moved away. Jessica and I had been friends since grade school and her and her husband had lived next door to us for 6 years. When they left, I felt depressed, insecure and alone. “Get over it” and “Find a new friend” were the only condolences my husband could offer.Their home was eventually purchased by an older gentleman, Richard, who appeared to be in his late 40s or early 50s. He was a tall handsome fellow with salt and pepper gray hair and deep blue eyes. Steve and I went over and introduced ourselves to him whil
One interesting fact about proxy servers (The computers that hold proxy web sites) is that they just don't exist in some far off country ending in "stan" or in China.Fact is many kids at school are quite savvy enough to turn for instance their laptop into a proxy web server, and then what? Tell other kids and they will then use this to surf where they're not supposed to.

Last month we reported the partial demolition of a the home on the corner of 7th and Bracken in the Radlick Park Subdivision. We grabbed some photos over the weekend of the framing that’s in process.
We’ve talked to the owner, who promises us the finished look will still be in character with the neighborhood.
There’s a few other 2 story homes nearby, so it won’t be the only one around, and the turreted entry should be interesting and fun.
