Okay, so the ninth commandment states that you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. Pretty simple, if she's married, do not make an attempt to brake the sacred bond of marriage. At least that is what I would consider those words to mean in today's society. Apparently that is not so. If I were to look at a married woman with lust in my eye I have already committed adultery. The island of Hawaii not only covers 63 percent of the state's entire land area but is still growing through volcanic activity. I cannot recall any other place where the elemental forces of earth-building are so clear to see. Volcanic fumes leak out from a thousand orifices, and along great sweeps of the coastline one sees immense flows of hardened lava from outbreaks of the last few decades. One flow in 1960 added some 500 acres to the eastern coast. Mauna Loa (13,677 feet above sea level) is the world's most active present-day volcano. This mountain's volcanic activity has been going on over so many eons of time that its land mass of 2,000 square miles above the ocean make it the largest single mountain in the world. Love thy neighbor...
What should we do when someone wears out their welcome? A friend of mine is currently struggling with a space invader. He has a friend who loves to stop by unannounced. This used to be okay, but lately it’s become a daily habit. My friend is threatening to develop a nasty habit himself — rudeness. He’s dropped subtle hints, then not-so-subtle hints. Neither has worked. It’s not like he can hide from this friend — he lives right next door. I told him to be direct — just tell him that you need some time to yourself. This provoked an interesting reaction. I guess some guys have a hard time telling other guys to go away. Next, I suggested that he put a “closed” sign on his door when he doesn’t feel like having company. He thought about this for a moment, but then decided hi

This Protector is kinda big, but the Sentry’s just jetski sized! In another eternal battle, that between good and bad neighboors, a blow has been struck for the forces of good. Rotten Neighbors has launched in Beta and tries to serve as a warning for where the bad neighbors are. A google maps mashup, you type in an address and can read the markers that people have left for where the bad guys are or you can click anywhere on the map to leave your own. It’s a little sparse right now, but could get interesting if enough folks get into it. Lastly there’s Pizdaus - a place where people can post their pics and have them voted up or down, digg style (via). Some are nsfw, but it’s mostly a repository for odd, cool and beautiful pictures. Well worth a look. I mean, where else co

If anyone wants to help promote the blog, let me know. I have a little banner/button for you. Now that the business is out of the way, it appears my loving neighbor has moved out. The last time I saw him was a few weeks ago, carrying things down the hallway, starting straight ahead, making sure not to make eye contact with me (the devil). I thought it was just me he hated since I was the one who tired to talk to him in the elevator, but Michelle said she saw him in the hallway by herself, smiled, and he pretending like she didn’t exist. Now, I know what you’re thinking. This guy hates all people, he doesn’t believe anyone exists. Wrong, I would say. On the bus, he sometimes sat with the same girl, and they would talk (rather loudly) the whole ride. This guy has the weirdest voice ever, by the way. Since then, h

Love Your Neighbor (and Your Children) As Yourself
In Campus Life a young nurse tells of a patient called Eileen. A cerebral aneurysm had left her with no conscious control over her body. The doctors thought she was totally unconscious, unable to feel pain, unaware of anything going on around her. It was the hospital staff’s job to turn her every hour to prevent bedsores, and to feed her twice a day through a stomach tube. “When it’s this bad,” an older nurse told her, “You have to detach yourself emotionally.” As a result Eileen came to be treated as a thing, a vegetable. But the young student nurse decided to treat her differently. She talked to Eileen, sang to her, and even brought her little gifts. One Thanksgiving Day she said to Eileen, “It was supposed to be my day off, but I couldn’t miss seeing you on Thanksgiving. Just then the telephone rang. As the nurse turned to answer it she looked quickly back at the patient: “Eileen was looking at me…crying. Big damp circles

      Neighbor Showdown
Well, it finally had to happen. Our neighbors finally showed themselves to be the rabid feral animals we knew them to be. I'm still shaken, so forgive me if this is disjointed. I needed to get it out somewhere.First off, the bad news is that the neighbors aren't losing their house now. It was to be foreclosed on, but their mortgage company decided at the last minute to work with them. I can only hope they miss more payments and get thrown out. Yeah, it's a little mean to wish that on them, but after tonight, you can understand why I feel that way.Tonight the kids were, once again, completely in our yard, taking over our side yard for their games. While out in the backyard, I caught a kid out of the corner of my eye, in the fenced in yard, and then he ran around the side of the house. I walked around to see two of the boys saying, "Let's get out of here," as they ran away, and the girl saying, "Oh, thanks guys, let me get in trouble." Clearly they know it's wrong to jump our fence.

Historic Oakland Cemetary gets a Green Neighbor
I thought I would ride my bike to the new Oakland Park condos on Memorial Drive since I was going to go learn about the newest and true green condos in Atlanta, but then I got lazy and drove. I did walk a couple of blocks after parking though. I digress. Oakland Park condos are sexy, sleek, and way green, and being green is what makes them so fabulous. As the only condo in Atlanta that is seeking LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification - believe me, LEED is a difficult process for builders and developers, - this building has placed the standard very high for other condos going up in Atlanta. I will be very surprised if anyone else comes close to creating such a green building in the near future. Call me if you do. Close to Cabbagetown, Grant Park, Reynoldstown, and even the Capitol, the condos offer bike racks, low volatile organic compound paints, large windows, bamboo floors, Energy Star appliances, rain barrels on the patios, and my favorite, the dou

      Hate Thy Neighbor
File this blog under idiots I've encountered. It's Chicago in September. The last month with a few days of perfect weather, so it's great to walk around on those nights. Me and Michelle were leaving our place, and caught the elevator, already opened, with our neighbor inside. Now, we've never officially met this neighbor, but he takes the same bus that I do, and works in the same neighborhood I do. We even get on and off at the same stop, but we've never spoken. I found a perfect opportunity to change that. I follow Michelle into the elevator.ME: Hey man, hows it going? NEIGHBOR: ...(He looks right at me. Awkward silence. He looks away and stares at the ceiling. Beat. The elevator doors slowly close. Much more Awkward Silence on the long trip down four short floors. The doors open up. NEIGHBOR gets off first, exits towards the back door, out through parking garage on foot.) WHAT THE FUCK?Now, Keith came over a few weeks ago, and asked if we knew who our neighbor was

      Envy thy neighbor
Here's a fun article from MSN about how the wealth around you can make you feel poor. We get to hear a couple of stories, sounding very typical, of young people entering the workforce and finding themselves surrounded by rich, successful people. So what do they do? They spend themselves deep into debt to keep up.When you hang around people who spend lots of money, you're probably going to do the same (or be miserable that you can't). Odds are also good that it will leave you broke.it is a daily struggle to keep it from skewing her financial perspective. "I find myself looking at something and saying, 'Oh, it's only $200.' Then I look at my accounts, and I have to remind myself, 'You can't afford $200!'"Personal finance has a lot to do with perspective. Especially for younger generations, sometimes its hard to focus on what the true value of a dollar is. We grew up with parents who spent, spent, spent. New cars, bigger houses, leveraging loans. What we didn't realize was that

      Who’s My Neighbor?
There is something I have run across a few times that is not sitting well with me and I’d like to get input on the subject from all of you. It’s this issue of a “Social Gospel.” The idea surrounding that term seems that we are to reach out and love on the world, meet their needs, help them out if we can. Yet, somehow, there are those who are opposed to such efforts, or so it seems, hence coining the connotative phrase “Social Gospel.” Now that’s my understanding of what people are referring to when they use that term. If there are other or better definitions, please do tell. (more…)

World Peace Begins With Your Neighbor
Why does it take a disaster to bring us together? Recent tragedies like 911, Hurricane Katrina, and the Tsunami remind us of who we are deep inside - a spiritually connected part of a large extended family, a web of living beings, sharing a tiny biosphere, on a small planet. As Albert Einstein reminded us, “our separation from each other is an optical illusion of consciousness.” Disasters jolt us out of the sleepwalking that can happen as we focus on the daily business of life and survival with our self focused agendas, even our higher spiritual ones. Disasters also can open our hearts, as spiritual energy comes through us and is released in the form of compassion to others. Collectively, a chain reaction of goodness can come as a flood, but then, after the crisis, a “spiritual dam” may form once again within us and we go back to the sleep of our busy lives. What Keeps Us From Sustaining This Level of Heart Opening Every Day? First, we are immersed in a materialistic culture t

Nintendo sells 28 acres of land to neighbor Microsoft for undisclosed sum of money
Although the console war can be bitter sometimes, that doesn’t always mean that companies can’t play nice with each other and do a little business on the side, particularly if it’s gonna benefit both sides. The two Redmond-based companies have struck a deal that will see 28 vacant acres of Nintendo-owned land acquired by Microsoft for an undisclosed sum of money. The parcel of land is located alongside highway 520 between Microsoft’s existing “RedWest” campus and Nintendo’s existing North American headquarters. The Web site reports that the deal is expected to close in the middle of the month, and Nintendo reps said it had nothing to do with the publisher’s recent decision to move its sales and marketing teams to California and New York. As for what Microsoft will do with the land, a spokesperson said it will be used for parking to ease problems at the RedWest campus, but there are no specific development plans yet. Should I wait to sell my house until I can get the same price my neighbor sold their house for?
Answer: No. It’s always better to trade up in a buyer’s market, like the one we are in now. While the value of your house has fallen, the price of higher-end homes has also dropped. Your home value is now down 10 percent to $270,000. But don’t forget that in today’s buyer’s market, higher priced homes are also dropping in price. But for argument’s sake, let’s say that a $500,000 move-up home has also dropped 10 percent in value and now sells at $450,000. If you sold your home today for $270,000 and purchased the larger house for $450,000, the difference in price would be $180,000. But if you waited to recoup the 10 percent value on your home and sold it at $300,000, chances are that same move-up home would also move up in price to at least $500,000. That’s a $200,000 price difference between the two homes. So by selling today, you would actually save $20,000. And most likely, by jumping into the market today your savings would be even greater because consumers have much

Caution: Your Neighbor's Drugs Could be up in Your Water
Flushing old medications down the toilet, a step long advised by consumer safety groups as a means of keeping dangerous drugs away from children and pets, is no longer recommended by government agencies and private groups. There is a growing concern that drugs in waterways could pose hazards to fish, plants and possibly humans. While there is no proven cause-and-effect relationship between drug residues and health or environmental harm, common sense and troubling indications, such as the appearance of hermaphroditic fish in some rivers, make keeping water drug-free a sensible precaution.Recent guidelines issued in February by the EPA and other government agencies encourage the following steps:Throw most drugs in the trash after crushing them or dissolving them in water, mixing them with kitty litter, coffee grounds or other unappealing materials, and placing the mixture in a sealed plastic bag.Remove and destroy any prescription labels before throwing away the containers. In some states,
