      The Effects of Self Neglect
Image: Rob Lee Due to a combination of physical illness, mild depression and my general apathy I recently went through a phase - a relatively long phase - where I neglected myself far too much. The consequences, sadly, were not good. More often than not I wouldn’t bother to get dressed. By the time my feed was finished being pumped into me it was already past noon and as I knew I’d be

Biological parents in nineteenth-century children's literature are a sorry lot, to say the least. They are constantly succumbing to influenza or typhoid, and when they manage to survive past their offspring's tenth birthday, as Jim Hawkins' mother does in Treasure Island, their behaviour is an almost suicidal mix of foolishness and cowardice. Saudis rush to preserve historic sites after years of neglect
The Prophet Muhammed's residence for 28 yearrs. One of the great mysteries of Saudi Arabia is why the religious establishment and the government treat the Kingdom's historical sites so shabbily. Either through willful destruction or neglect, many of the historic treasures of Madinah, Makkah, Jeddah and in the Empty Quarter are now gone. Ancient mosques, the Prophet's residence in Makkah, old railroads and desert communities have disappeared under frenzied construction of new projects or simple neglect. I often asked Saudis why these historic sites are not protected and I've never received a clear response. Much of it has to do with the religious fundamentalists who insist that historic buildings or places must not be venerated or held as an object of worship. Religious leaders are especi

Shirking the small details makes more of a difference than you'd probably imagine. My fingernails are always black and chipped from some project I'm in the middle of completing and the balls of my feet are always rough and dirty from walking barefoot all day. To the average daily encounter I must look like I don't bathe for weeks. I've *never* had a professional manicure in my life let alone a pedicure. So that's why the theme of our bi-weekly MOPS meeting was right up my alley. They say pedicures and manicures are as much about relaxation as they are about the aesthetics of having nice-looking nails. I just realized how long it has been since I updated.  It was almost as if my post became a lonely sticky, atop the page.  This season has been quite busy, but I have been enjoying it like never before.  There are tasks to be done: tree trimming, Christmas cards, working on the San Diego Track Club website, trying to find time to finish getting the house ready to sell, wrapping presents, FINALLY finishing thank you notes from Allie’s birthday a month ago, and always wanting to put a dent in the laundry that has taken on a life of its own. Allison is growing up so fast.  She is such a happy, wonderful little girl.  We have our occasional two-year old outbursts, but she is such a good little girl. Allie and I went to Knott’s Berry Farm today (sorry, too lazy to put up a link).  It was such a great day.  We met my childhood friend Pam and her beautiful family, my parents, my nephew, and my sister this morning.  We spent most of the day in Camp Snoopy, where the kid&rsq

Should Children Who Neglect Their Elderly Parents Be Criminally Liable?
This was the motion (i.e. the proposition - the thing that is to be debated on) for the octofinals of the National Debate Championship. It’s quite interesting and very relevant regardless of which country you set it. In the United States, the Baby Boomer generation is aging and they will need to be taken cared of some way. We’re all quite aware that not all families in the US observe the same level of family ties that we in the Philippines are accustomed to. I know it’s a gross understatement, but in a society wherein divorce is an everyday fact of life and where it is not uncommon for children to move out to exercise their right to emancipation, the parents are usually left by wayside. If the parents are lucky, their children will probably visit them during Thanksgiving or Christmas, but as far as actual cohabitation and geriatric care is concerned, it’s a vast gray area. The medical care field was fast to anticipate this problem of course. The past decade ha

Why You Can’t Afford To Neglect The Anti-Oxidant Micro-Nutrients
Since its discovery in 1922 Vitamin E has become generally regarded as one of the body’s most powerful, versatile and useful anti-oxidants.  And as such its importance should not be underestimated, because anti-oxidants are the principal defense against the free radicals which are responsible for much of the degeneration and consequent disease which afflicts the human body as it ages. Numerous studies have demonstrated the benefits of vitamin E in protecting against and restricting the progression of cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis. Vitamin E also appears to have anti-coagulant properties similar to the drugs prescribed for this purpose, and may therefore help to protect against the highly dangerous blood clots which can lead to stroke – still one of the main causes of premature death and disability in the western world. Vitamin E is also needed in large quantities by the brain, the proper functioning of which is highly dependent on the efficient tran

Couple Blames Internet for Child Neglect
I’m sure by now most of you have heard about this awful story. Apparently, Michael and Iana Straw of Reno Nevada were so addicted to video games and the Internet that they practically starved their two children (age 22 months and 11 months) to death. They’ve both pleaded “guilty” and face a possible 12-year prison term. Prosecutor Kelli Ann Viloria said that the couple had food in the home, they just chose not to feed their children. The 11 month old girl weighed only 10 pounds, had a mouth infection, and was serverly dehydrated. Authorites also had to shave her hair because it was matted with cat urine. The 22 month old boy was treated for starvation, genital infections, and severe muscle deterioration. You can read the whole story here. Some experts are now claiming that Internet addiction may be based on a psychological disorder. In fact, some are going as far as equating it to a drug addiction. I don’t know if I buy it. Now, I will be the first to a

Disgraceful Book Neglect in East St. Louis
I'm starting to believe that libraries are a dangerous place for the average book. We all expect that library books will suffer the same kind of abuse, and for the same reasons, that we associate with rental cars. If it's not that, we've seen enough stories about large numbers of books ending up in dumpsters to know that strange things can happen to books in the place that one would least expect those things to happen. Well, here's one more story that has to be a huge embarrassment to the library system in East St. Louis. For the 7,000 books sitting in a storage unit on State Street, it's abandonment all over again. The books were among at least 10,000 items including magazines and albums left in a shuttered city library for more than three years. Many of the items became makeshift beds or fire starters for homeless people, who broke into the library for shelter. Good News for Child Abuse/Neglect Victims
Psychological Interventions Can Reduce Child Abuse And Neglect "Although the prevention and eradication of child abuse and neglect is a high-priority societal goal, the fact remains that an overwhelming number of youth will become victims," Skowron said. "Results of the current study indicate that psychological treatments for child abuse and neglect are effective and can assist children and their families to regain their functioning and facilitate the development of healthy, productive lives." These researchers review 21 rigorous studies that included over 1000 children. They found that not only did children who had suffered abuse and neglect improved with treatment, they found that parents who had parent skills training improved their parenting skills. This is good news for victims and for programs who provide these critical services. Families at risk for child maltreatment are difficult to reach. Finding enough licensed providers to work with this population has been difficult at
