Fingers and loops revealed in the Crab Nebula
The Chandra X-ray Observatory has captured the first clear view of the faint boundary of the Crab Nebula’s X-ray emitting pulsar wind nebula. The Crab Nebula is located about 6,000 light years away in the constellation of Taurus and is powered by a rapidly rotating, highly magnetised neutron star, or pulsar (seen as a white dot near the centre of the image), the remnant of the gravitational col

      The Lagoon Nebula.
There are many beautiful things in this universe of ours (if you don’t believe me, you could start by looking at my new picture on the About page… well, maybe not!), but the Lagoon Nebula has to be up there — literally — with the best of them. In the constellation of Sagittarius, this classic deep-sky [...]

      M8- The Lagoon Nebula
Taken from my backyard on 6/7/08, with an Orion XT10 telescope and Canon Rebel XTi DSLR. Located about 4100 light-years away in the constellation Sagittarius, the Lagoon Nebula is one of the brightest star-forming regions in the sky. It is a giant interstellar cloud and H II region, which is currently undergoing vivid star formation, and has already formed a considerable cluster of young stars.

Celestial Depth - Eagle Nebula Study 1
"Eagle Nebula Study 1"Completed: 1.27.08mixed media: acrylics, watercolors, marker, charcoalHere is my first study for my Eagle Nebula painting. I like the colors I started with in the center where the triangle shape is. I used all the colors I saw in the photos first, but I think I might want to select just a few colors to use. I'm leaning towards blues, greens, oranges, and blacks. I then added the bigger stars with silver acrylic paint with a paint brush, then smaller stars with toothbrush bristles. In the process, I shook the acrylic paint bottle to get the paint near the lid. However, I forgot that the lid was not on all the way, and it flew off. I was covered with "stars" and am still doing laundry... :DShannon

Celestial Depth - Eagle Nebula Sketch
"Eagle Nebula Sketch"Completed: 1.24.08ballpoint pen on paper I love pictures of outer space. It is so colorful and dark at the same time. Outer space is a never ending subject to explore, and I loved learning about it in my astronomy (not astrology!) class in college. I have been wanting to create artwork depicting outer space for some time, but rarely have done it. Now, I am starting. This is a ballpoint sketch of different areas of the Eagle Nebula in basic shapes and lines. I have switched the composition of the actual nebula around to create a piece I feel is balanced and interesting to look at. I will be creating a couple of studies in water colors, acrylics, charcoal, and marker. My vision for this series is to create pictures of parts of outer space that show the mystery it holds

      The Crab Nebula
In the year 1054 A.D., Chinese astronomers were startled by the appearance of a new star that was so bright that it was visible in broad daylight for several weeks. Located about 6,500 light-years from Earth, the Crab Nebula is the remnant of a star that began its life with about 10 times the mass of our sun. Its life ended on July 4, 1054 when it exploded as a supernova. High Resolution Image (1.66 MB)Resembling an abstract painting by Jackson Pollack, the image shows ragged shards of gas that are expanding away from the explosion site at over 3 million miles per hour. The core of the star has survived the explosion as a pulsar, a neutron star that spins on its axis 30 times a second. It heats its surroundings, creating the ghostly diffuse bluish-green glowing gas cloud in its vicinity. The colorful network of filaments is the material from the outer layers of the star that was expelled during the explosion. The various colors in the picture arise from different chemical elements in t

Helix Nebula, Gaseous Envelope Expelled By a Dying Star VIDEO
Animation of a 3-D model - created from Hubble Space Telescope and ground-based data of the Helix Nebula High Resolution Image 3.62 MB(6145 x 6623 pixels). Credit: NASA, ESA, C.R. O'Dell (Vanderbilt University), M. Meixner and P. McCullough (STScI)ABOUT THIS IMAGE: This composite image is a view of the colorful Helix Nebula taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys aboard NASA's Hubble Space Telescope and the Mosaic II Camera on the 4-meter telescope at Cerro Tololo Inter-American Observatory in Chile. The object is so large that both telescopes were needed to capture a complete view. The Helix is a planetary nebula, the glowing gaseous envelope expelled by a dying, sun-like star. The Helix resembles a simple doughnut as seen from Earth. But looks can be deceiving. New evidence suggests that the Helix consists of two gaseous disks nearly perpendicular to each other. One possible scenario for the Helix's complex structure is that the dying star has a companion star. One disk may be p

Vehige: My Hugo and Nebula Novel Project
Lest anyone think I don't take my own advice, I'm reading (and rereading) all of the novels that won the Hugo Awards and/or the Nebula Awards. To keep me on track, I've set up a new blog (of sorts) called Vehige's Hugo and Nebula Novel Project, in which I've listed all 80 or so novels that have won these awards.I've read several of them, but I'm going to make it a comprehensive project, starting from scratch -- which is all right, because there was only one I really hated: Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Also, I'm making it a point to read the novels that won both awards first. Why exactly am I doing this? Well, I'll leave it for you to figure out.

      Nebula Card
I decided to call this card 'Nebula', simply because it reminds me of the photos you see of those astronomical phenomena. Different colourway this time too !This is the third spin 'n' splash card I have completed. This time I have used Ranger alcohol inks on a silver mirri card base and then cut this into four pieces. This was then mounted onto a hand made textured background (featured elsewhere on the blog), with metallic brads and applied to two mats one in cream card and one in mauve. The background card is cream pearlescent card cut and scored to fold.

Space the Final Frontier, Cat's Eye Nebula
Three thousand light-years away, the Cat's Eye Nebula, a dying star throws off shells of glowing gas. This image from the Hubble Space Telescope reveals the nebula to be one of the most complex planetary nebulae known. In fact, the features seen in the Cat's Eye are so complex that astronomers suspect the bright central object may actually be a binary star system. The term planetary nebula is misleading; although these objects may appear round and planet-like in small telescopes, high resolution images reveal them to be stars surrounded by cocoons of gas blown off in the late stages of stellar evolution.
