This morning I took my daughter to the bus at 6:30 am when the streets were still dark and the air crisp and cold. Steam rose from the grates in the street next to the curb and my fingers froze around the steering wheel as I waited for the heat to reach my extremities.

This is a sad story. But it's simplistic to blame the abandoned children solely on poor mental health care. While the statistics are stunning about the incidence of mental illness in these children, another problem involved is the insufficient income of the parents, likely an inter-generational history of neglect and abuse, as well as the stigma of asking for help.

This from Education Week (subscription):Doug Christensen, the Nebraska education commissioner, is resigning...Mr. Christensen has fought for years to keep Nebraska’s unique, district-created assessments, saying local teachers are best equipped to judge their students’ achievement. But the legislature is considering whether to make standardized tests the state’s only tool to measure academic success. ("Nebraska Bill Would Boost State Tests' Status," March 26, 2008).Nebraska currently is the only state that does not use statewide standardized tests to meet accountability requirements under the NCLB law. And while the state education department has worked hard to make the home-grown assessments comply with the federal law, that hasn’t happened, said Jim Scheer, a member of the Nebrask

What gives with all this crap? Why are these young teachers running off with students and getting knocked up or whatever? And most importantly, how are they getting into the school system?I just read that the boy she ran off with was a 13 year-old illegal immigrant. That is really going to get the Obama camp in an uproar; and because this kid was an illegal, that means the media and any libs with public status will portray this as a love story with a tragic ending.I can see Michael Moore doing a documentary when this teacher gets out of prison. He will locate the boy when he becomes an adult. Then he will find this teacher. After that he will re-unite them so they can live in love and harmony, and not under such horrendous limitations created by Republican policies. All the while, the kid will have a confused expression on his face when he looks at her again thinking, "This bitch is fruit loops!".
Needless to say, Nebraska football fans are a teeny bit upset with the way their team has performed this season. Which is understandable when the once vaunted Blackshirt defense gives up 76 points. In one game. To the Kansas Jayhawks. And this wasn't a pick-up basketball game between the KU basketball team and Nebraska defensive players. This was on the football field. As you might imagine, the fanbase is growing restless and want to see head coach Bill Callahan and defensive coordinator Kevin Cosgrove gone, and quickly. In the following press release Nebraska Attorney General Jon Bruning and John Munn, Director of the Nebraska Department of Banking and Finance (NDBF), today announced the State is suing Omaha-based Advantage Mortgage Service, Inc., a mortgage brokerage firm, and its principal owners and operators for predatory lending practices. The NDBF is also instituting license revocation proceedings. “Advantage Mortgage preyed on Nebraskans who dreamed of providing better lives for their families,” Bruning said. “Instead, those families face a very real threat of losing their homes. We will not tolerate predatory lending in this state.” Munn stated that this investigation and the ensuing legal action should alert Nebraskans to the importance of dealing with reputable lenders. “Loan applicants must feel comfortable shopping for a loan and seeking assistance so that they know what they are signing and understand the terms of their proposed loan,” Munn said. I know, I know. It's college gameday. But there's baseball game on, too.
So even though we won yesterday and Ramirez scored approximatley ten million runs in the processs, PECOTA now thinks we have LESS of a chance of making the post-season than we did yesterday. So, on behalf of the entire site, PECOTA, you're not our best-friend anymore.
On the other hand, most of us are feeling downright chipper today. Yes, OGDJM! completely ignored my plea to keep the sucakge to minimum, but the bottom line is that this team found a way to win (namely, waiting for Ramirez to hit two near-grand slams) though the game featured such paragons of craptacular baseball as Will Ohman, Matt Murton, Ronny Cedeno, and OGDJM. Lest we've all forgotten, there was a time this season when Will Ohman entering the game was the unequivocal death knell for this team. I still cover my face with a pillow when he comes into a game, but at least I don't get up and head to the mall anymore.

The defendant in a state senator's lawsuit is accused of causing untold death and horror and threatening to cause more still. He can be sued in Douglas County, the legislator claims, because He's everywhere. State Sen. Ernie Chambers sued God last week. Angered by another lawsuit he considers frivolous, Chambers says he's trying to make the point that anybody can file a lawsuit against anybody. Chambers says in his lawsuit that God has made terroristic threats against the senator and his constituents, inspired fear and caused "widespread death, destruction and terrorization of millions upon millions of the Earth's inhabitants." The Omaha senator, who skips morning prayers during the legislative session and often criticizes Christians, also says God has caused "fearsome floods ... horrendous hurricanes, terrifying tornadoes." Meet Ernie ChambersNote: Ernie Chambers is a long-time member of the North Omaha community, a historic civil rights leader in Omaha's black community, and widely-regarded as Nebraska's most prominent and outspoken black leader. He has been regarded by national media as "the Maverick of Omaha," the "angriest black man in Nebraska," and the "defender of the downtrodden."Chambers says senators periodically have offered bills prohibiting the filing of certain types of suits. He says his main objection is the constitution requires that the doors to the courthouse be open to all. Chambers said, "Thus anybody can file a lawsuit against anybody - even God."Chambers lawsuit, which was filed on Friday in Douglas County Court, seeks a permanent injunction ordering God to cease certain harmful activities and the making of terroristic threats. The lawsuit admits God goes by all sorts of alias, names, titles and designations and it also recognizes the fact that the defendant is “Omnipresent.”Th
An initiative is brewing in California to change the way that California's electoral college votes are allocated. If the initiative qualifies for the ballot, and passes with a sufficient margin in the state's June 2008 election, California would award two of its electoral votes to the at-large winner of the state in the general election, and then split 53 of its 55 electoral votes based on how each House district within the state votes. Currently, Nebraska and Maine allocate their electoral votes this way, and they have been largely ignored in general Presidential elections. All of the other states allocate their electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis. California is currently the richest prize in the Electoral College, with 55 votes going to the plurality winner of California's general election -- which, given current and most reasonably foreseeable political circumstances for 2008 (and likely for 2012, at least) are votes that the Democrats can bank on.* In other words, if

The Nebraska Sports Council has a three-month team wellness program called N-Lighten Nebraska, which was started in 2003. The objective of this program is to promote more physical activity and weight loss for its participants.
There’s an entry fee of $15 per person and for those who will be entering this program online will only be paying $13. The criteria for judging of which team will win will depend on the following:
1. Weight Loss
Each member of the team submits an “honor” weight to the team captain. Captains total the team weight, complete the team entry form and submit it by Feb. 1. “Honor” weigh-ins will be repeated in March 15 (midway point) and May (final). Winning teams are those that lose the highest percentage of weight over the three-month program.
2. Accumulated ActivityTeams track miles based on activity performed (see the Activity Tracker in the NLN Handbook). Winning teams are those that log the most miles over the three-month program. Ca
I realize that we've been back home since late Monday night, but I'm just now getting some of my pictures from the Nebraska trip uploaded and I thought I'd share. We had such a wonderful time there, hanging out with my side of the family. Of course, the week flew by all too quickly!Photo #1: Here's a picture of Snuggle Bug walking hand-in-hand with his cousin, Aiden. I was so pleased that he didn't need any "warm-up" time with this side of the family. Despite the fact that we live out of state and haven't seen them since last Thanksgiving, Snuggle Bug seemed to feel comfortable with everyone right away!Photo #2: In this picture, Snuggle Bug is riding on a 3-wheeler driven by his Uncle Cole. Yesterday morning, bright and early at 6:30 a.m., Snuggle Bug and I hopped on a plane to fly to Nebraska. We flew back to attend my 14 year old nephew's confirmation (I'm his Godmother) and we're staying for 6 days. Hooray! For the first time ever, we had to pay for Snuggle Bug to have his own seat. Now that he's two, we can no longer take him on free as a lap child.I'm actually kind of glad that he had his own seat. I had my own space and he had his, which was nice.Snuggle Bug had his nose pressed to the window to watch the planes and luggage carts before take-off. He loved take-off and he did just fine with the landings. He slept for part of the flight too. He's such a good little traveler. The only struggles I had was when it came time to make him sit down and put a seat belt on. He protested but I still got my way. So, this may be a silly picture, but I had to take it. This "rapid charger" contraption fascinated me. I've never seen one before. For $3 you can charge nearly a

Here is a case of a solution trying to find a problem. Nebraska State Sen. Lowen Kruse has introduced a bill to close loopholes in state laws that allow minors to consume alcohol. Wine served as part of holy communion religious ceremonies is one of the targets.Sen. Kruse's bill would make it illegal to allow minors to drink alcohol in their own homes or at churches during services. Catholics and several other Christian churches use wine as part of observances to replicate Christ's words at the Last Supper. The church groups are protesting the measure as a potential violation of religious rights. Sen. Kruse has said that, while the wording of the law would ban all alcohol consumption by minors in churches, he did not believe anyone would be brought up on charges if teens consumed wine as part of the rituals during a mass. Church leaders say they would have trouble knowingly violating Nebraska law during services if the bill passes. The bill would also make it illegal for parents to sha

Yes, most of my side of the family lives in Nebraska and this is where we're currently at for the Thanksgiving holiday!Traveling to get here was time consuming, but thankfully there were no delays, our luggage was waiting for us, and Snuggle Bug was a fantastic little traveler! He played, slept twice on the 2 flights we took, and had a wonderful time watching all the planes take-off during our 3 hour layover.Being home with my family has been fantastic thus far! The weather is mild for this time of the year. Snuggle Bug is right now playing with 5 of his 6 cousins. My older sister's house is a tangled jungle of toys strewn all about the house, but the kids are having a blast! Thankfully, Snuggle Bug has shown no signs of shyness around his aunts, uncles, and cousins thus far. He just gets in there and plays with the best of them. I'm getting some cute pictures which I'll try to post later.Tomorrow our entire family is getting together for a huge Thanksgiving feast. I can't wait! O

Senator Hagel gave a speech on Iran yesterday that is well worth a read. Reading this speech reminded me why I do this blog: we need Chuck Hagel, with his wisdom and insight in foreign policy, in the White House. Here are some excerpts:Forces and events in the Middle East cannot be neatly categorized. The swirl of Middle East history creates layers upon layers of complexity. There is little transparency in the Middle East. That is a reality that is inescapable and cannot be assumed away. To ignore this reality is to risk being trapped by false choices....false choices such as the question, "which is worse - Iran with nuclear weapons or war with Iran?â€...On Afghanistan, the United States and Iran found common interests - defeating the Taliban and Islamic radicals, stabilizing Afghanistan, stopping the opium production and flow of opium coming into Iran.
