Our trip to the Great Smokey Mountain National Park
As we drove into the Smokey Mountains, how they got their name was obvious. It looked like the clouds were ascending from a thousand vents in the mountains as they took their place in the sky. Other days, a haze hung over the mountains as if they were covered in smoke. Some of this haze is caused by clouds. Some is from pollution, both natural and man-made. The Great Smokey Mountain National Park is unique in that it was carved out of private land. Donations were made so that the federal government could purchase large tracts of land from lumber companies as well as from farmers. Many of the old buildings remain, including the remains of stone chimneys and a graveyard outside a church. Because of varying altitudes, soil types, moisture levels and light levels, the Smokes boast an incredible diversity of plant and animal life within a relatively small geographic area, including approximately 200 species of birds. There are also trails throughout the park. Some carry you to

all set to visit Haleakala National Park
In case you don't know, next to Waikiki, the next most popular destination in Hawaii is Maui. In December, we will be part of the 2.5 million travelers to set foot on its sunny shores. From what I read, Maui has lots to offer in every sense - nature, sun, mountains, ocean and the waterfalls. We are planning for a trip to the Haleakala National Park during our two nights there. I heard that watching sunset at the summit is the best experience anyone can have yet I am not sure if we can ever make it with a three year old :P Those who have traveled with little children know that we can't have high expectations when we travel with kids. Be realistic is the best way to make everyone happy. If we can't have the best, we must be prepared for second best.Maui is an ideal destination for families. With the many Maui condos in the area, it's easy to find one that suits your needs and budget. If you need help on accommodation search, the Hawaiian travel blog is a good source of information, ho

As a sailing destination, Mu Koh Lanta National Park makes a fine day’s jaunt. You can snorkel, coastal cruise, trek and bird-watch, with wildlife encounters virtually guaranteed. The National Park is made up of 10 idyllic islands, of which Kho Lanta is the largest. Isolated and quiet, it is perfect for those tired urban attractions. It offers a small selection of quality accommodations. The island of Kho Rok Nai features a red, wind-eroded cliff, dropping down to broad beaches, while Koh Rok Nok offers an inspiring view of Ao Man Sai. Koh, Krabi, Lanta, Mu, National, Park, Thailand

Doi Inthanon is the highest mountain in Thailand, 2,565 m. from sea level. The geography is bountiful with foresst and the atmosphere is cool and fresh all year. The weather is cold with high humidity throughout the year, particularly at the top of the National Park. In winter, the temperature at the National Park is below 0 c and the mountain is covered with fog all day. In summer, despite hot weather in central Chiang Mai and nearby districts, it is still freezing. Gunung Mulu National Park, World Heritage Area
A while back I wrote about my short excursion to Gunung Mulu National Park (that was way back in 1998) and wanted to do some follow-up postings after that but never did. Anyway here goes. My memories of the place never really left me compared to other places I’ve been to and I never really figured out why. Until yesterday, when I saw my son drew a mountain on his colouring book. “Sharp sharp one, daddy”, he said as he tried to emphasise on how high and sharp the peaks of the mountains her drew were. First thing I thought of was, Mulu. Not Kinabalu (well maybe because I’ve never actually been there, only fantasized about it) or Everest (same reason as well). Gunung Mulu (“gunung” is mountain in the Malay language) would captivate any nature lover down to the very depths of your soul. When you enter what I refer to as ‘hallowed natural ground” that is the entrance to the national park area proper, the very first thing you will notice is the pungent smell of its natural su

Engagement photos in Rocky Mountain National Park
I’ve been neglecting my blog lately! Bad bad bad. But today I decided to update things with a short post. I’m in California right now preparing for a week of photo shoots. 14 corporate head shots, 3 magazine assignments and two weddings. Whoah! I flew in the evening of July 4th, so I managed to see fireworks shows from the airplane from Denver all the way to California. The coolest was flying into San Luis Obispo, where I got to see the fireworks exploding above the thick marine layer that had formed over the ocean. It was amazing watching these bursts illuminate the fog below. Aaaanyway, a few days ago I shot Allison and Ben’s engagement session. We cruised in and out of Rocky Mountain National Park, and along the scenic Highway 7 with their two pups. Came away with some cool stuff. Congrats, you two! I look forward to the wedding!

Lake Nakuru National Park; One of the Last Remaining Bird Sanctuaries in the World
The Lake Nakuru National Park is one of the last remaining bird sanctuaries in the world today. Its the second most visited national park in Kenya after the Masai Mara Game Reserve and arguably the most profitable. The Lake is a shallow 3.5m deep soda lake inhabited by thousands of teeming Flamingos synonymous with the lake and is home to more than 400 other bird species, creating a marvel that is fulfilling to behold. This is the reason why many ornithologists flock here throughout the year in search of unique bird species. The Lake Nakuru National Park was gazetted as a national park in 1961, initially only a few square miles in size but today it has grown to 180 square kilometers of euphorbia forest, woodland forest, grasslands, rocky cliffs and acasia forests habouring thousands of flamingos, hundreds of bird species more than you have ever seen in years, countless mammals, carnivorous animals, baboons, Hyraxes and Hippos. The Lake Nakuru National Park is also home to a black and wh

Malaria is Alive and Well in the Kruger National Park South Africa
Very often (particularly after periods of low rainfall) the malaria risk in Kruger is very low. Many people decide not to take prophylactics and rather try to avoid getting bitten. The most vulnerable times are between dusk and dawn. People are advised to stay indoors during these periods, or cover exposed skin with light clothing or insect repellants. The ankles are the most critical area. Burning anti-mosquito coils and ensuring netted screens are kept closed are other preventative measures. Original post by Jennifer Viegas

Ushuaia and the Tierra del Fuego National Park, Argentina
Three days ago we were in Ushuaia, Argentina. It started off a beautiful sunny day, the first for a long time. The wind was fierce but in the shelter of the town the sun was pleasantly warm.Carlos and I decided to catch a bus to Tierra del Fuego National Park. Carlos is from Cozumel, Mexico and has been struggling to cope with the cold temperatures in this region. In Cozumel the temperature rarely drops below 25 degrees celsius. The bus left Ushuaia and made it’s way along a dirt track into the park. It dropped us off close to the Bahia Ensenada. It was a short 1.4km walk to the bay. An easy walk with lots of downhill, which meant lots of uphill on the way back. The blue skies had disappeared and I felt some drops of rain. But it was worth it when we got to the bay. It’s a beautiful setting. The sea was a dark gray and on the opposite sides of the bay were black snow covered mountains. Above the mountains, dark clouds and streaks of falling rain. It was like someone had drawn the sce

Find a national park near you
The National Park Service have done some serious upgrading to the park finder formerly known as clunky. You can search for parks by name, location, activity, and topic. If you mouse over your third column results, you'll get a pop-up with a snippet of info (much like the one you see in the screenshot above). In addition, you can instantly access park hours, fees, and reservation info.
