Profits from Namibia's largest diamond mine drop by half
Net profits from Namibia's largest diamond producer, Namdeb, a subsidiary of DeBeers, dipped almost by half last year despite slight increase in production, the company said on Friday."Net profits for the year 2007 came to 143 million Namibian dollars (18.4 million US dollars) compared to 305 million Namibian dollars (39.3 million US dollars) in 2006," Namdeb, jointly owned by the Namibian government and the DeBeers, said in a newspaper advertisement.Diamond production in 2007 was 2,176 carats, four percent up from 2,085 carats the previous year, with half of the diamonds found on land and from marine mining in the Atlantic Ocean.

      Namibia: Commissioner Slams 'Diamond Cowboy'
DIAMOND Commissioner Kennedy Hamutenya has slammed alleged attempts by Malaysian businessman Subrmanian Ragubahti to discredit the Ministry of Mines and Energy, warning that the fight for control of the Skeleton Coast diamonds amounted to playing Russian roulette with Namibia's international reputation for clean diamonds. In a strongly worded press release issued late last week, Hamutenya called on the Government to bring an end to the fight for control of the so-called Toscanini claim "...before it is too late because Toscanini has become a liability for our industry's reputation".

      Namibia eager to prove themselves
Namibia take on Morocco in Accra today anxious to prove that having shocked the continent by qualifying they fully deserve their place at the Africa Nations Cup high table. This is only the second time that Namibia have made it to the finals, the first in 1998 proved a chastening experience — the Brave Warriors going home after the first round with just one point. But they lived up to their nickname when fighting back from 3-0 down to lose a seven-goal feast against Ivory Coast. Their build up to this tough opening Group A game has been marred by tragedy with coach Ben Bamfuchile having to resign because of an ultimately fatal illness leaving Dutchman Arie Schans to take over the Warriors’ reins.Namibia owe their presence in Accra to upstaging habitual cup finalists DR Congo and Libya,

Safaris and endless sands in Namibia
We visited in late September, the end of the six-month dry season when the landscape takes on almost ghostly qualities as dust and sand envelops the scrub and vegetation. It's the best time for instant, quick-fix game viewing -- in contrast to the hours sometimes spent in Kruger. Although visits are possible all year round, it can get uncomfortably hot between November and February.Etosha is deservedly the highlight of a visit to Namibia, a country dominated by the Namib and Kalahari deserts and roughly the size of France and Germany combined, which is attracting growing numbers of tourists -- especially from Europe -- lured by safaris and sand. Endless, endless sand.

The Voice of Reason from Namibia
By: Morne What can I do to change the face of rugby or the way it is played in South Africa? I was recently asked this very question and it took me months to figure it out - after all, I am just a normal Joe Soap who is a passionate supporter of the game of rugby as millions of South Africans are.The strange thing for me though is the fact that I am never short of an opinion on the on-goings in South African rugby, but like a wise man once said, an opinion is like buttocks, everyone has one. So just how can the average Joe change the rugby in South Africa? Well, it took me a while to figure it out, but I think I may have found the answer. But I wanted to write something that is not only ideas and opinions. I wanted to write something that brings a message across. A message to the guys that started this concept, a message to people who have registered and read this website, and a message to people still deciding whether to join or not. SARSU is mostly about giving the guy on the street

RWC: England Wins; Pumas Crush Namibia
When I updated the England vs Samoa match earlier today, the score was 26-22 in favor of England with about 20 minutes or so to go. I went to my son's youth football game (a 40-6 victory for the Bears, my son had an interception & ripped the ball away from the running back, causing a fumble, which he recovered. Good job my boy!) and when I got back home, I see that England ended up winning 44-22. Wow, that must have been a crazy 20 minute stretch!!! England will need to defeat Tonga to advance to the knockout stage, and that may not be as easy as it sounds.Argentina continued to impress as they easily defeated Namibia 63-3. Prior to the RWC, I stated in many Rugby forums that I felt Argentina could make it all the way to the semi-finals and most felt I was on drugs. I stand by that prediction, you will see the Pumas in the semi's.In Sunday action, Scotland takes on the mighty All Blacks while Australia takes on Fiji. New Zealand should win fairly easily and Australia will as well

Rugby, World Cup: Ireland To Smash Namibia
...and that won't be any kind of surprise while most of the bookies give around 1,01 for fix betting on this game if you want to take Ireland (if you want to try Namibia you are probably completely out of your mind). For example, bet-at-home offers 1,01 for win for all of the major favourites today among the World Cup coupon - Wales, South Africa, Scotland and Ireland - even you combine all these 4 still it is not worthy enough to risk your money (specially when you have Canada really motivated, and backed up with some good history also, to show some nice piece of rugby against Wales). That is why I will take a bit risky game and try the handicap of bet365 on Ireland - Namibia game.Pick: Ireland to beat Namibia, Ireland -70Odds: 1.90 offered y bet365 todayLOSTI admit that Ireland are not in their best shape even welcoming back their influential captain Brian O'Driscoll who is fit again for the opening of this World Cup campaign of his team. But what is really important is that they h

      Ghostly pyromaniac in Namibia
Some people in Namibia do have problems... Five families at Havana squatter camp in Katutura are living in fear after their houses were attacked with stones from an unseen hand in broad daylight and three homes were razed by a mysterious fire. The families are attributing the incidents to a spirit that is haunting 15-year-old Anastasia Johannes. ... When New Era visited the site on Friday, Johannes's uncle alleged that she was paying for the sins of her mother Penehafo David and stepfather (only known as Mehas) who sourced help from a witchdoctor to become rich. It turned out that for the juju to be effective the witchdoctor instructed the stepfather to kill the girl's mother, which the stepfather refused to do. "Now this has backfired. Never in my life has a family member approached a witchdoctor for wealth. This is the first time I hear of such a thing. "The stepfather refused to kill her mother because he still loves her, now the ghost wants to kill the child," alleged Johannes u
