Clearwire Corporation and Sprint Nextel Corporation today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement to combine their next-generation wireless broadband businesses to form a new wireless communications company.The new company, which will be named Clearwire, will be focused on expediting the deployment of the first nationwide mobile WiMAX network to provide a true mobile broadband experience for consumers, small businesses, medium and large enterprises, public safety organizations and educational institutions. The new Clearwire expects to dramatically enhance the speed and manner in which customers access all that the Internet has to offer at home, in the office and on the road.  

According to a published report on Tuesday, Sprint's has reached an agreement with Clearwire, combining the two companies wireless broadband divisions. Clearwire traded up 12.4 percent immediately following the news.

More bad news for Sprint Nextel.  Today Qwest Communications International Inc. announced it will stop reselling Sprint Nextel Corp.'s wireless service and move its subscribers to Verizon Wireless' network. As a result, Sprint will lose 824,000 subscribers that Qwest contributed to Sprint's 53.8 million subscribers (reported end of last year).  Sprint has been suffering defections from its subscriber base and has been losing money.Qwest signed a five-year contract with Verizon Wireless that will start this summer. Sprint Nextel's stock sunk over 9 percent after the company reported that it lost $29.5 billion during the fourth quarter. The loss was mostly related to merger expenses with Nextel. The company announced that it has suspended its dividend and taken out a $2.5 billion loan. Daniel Hesse, Sprint's CEO, responded to bankruptcy concerns stating that the company has plenty of cash on hand and borrowed the funds to allow for greater flexibility in fixing its business.

Sprint Next is expected to be offering a significantly lower flat-rate plan that may as much as 40 percent lower then its rivals. Recently, both Verizon Wireless and AT&T have announced flat-rate plans for $100 that provide unlimited calling. Analysts are expecting Sprint to counter with a plan that could cost as low as $60 a month. The industry could facing a long overdue price war leading to much lower profit margins.

Sprint Nextel and Clearwire plan to jointly construct the first nationwide mobile broadband network using WiMAX technology (announced last August) has died.  The companies couldn't finalize a preliminary agreement they signed last July to pursue the partnership.  They companies in July had announced plans to accelerate the agreement. The companies had hoped to finalize the agreement within 60 days but the agreement became too complex.  The recent departure of Gary Forsee, Sprint's chief executive, didn't help matters.The collapse of the preliminary agreement is a blow to CLearwire.  The company had staked its future on WiMax, which is a longer range cousin of Wi-Fi that theoretically provides wireless broadband access for laptops and cell phones at speeds comparable to what cable operators provide.

According to the Associated Press, Sprint Nextel Corp. wireless subscribers may no longer have to purchase a new cell phone if they transfer to a new carrier.  As part of a proposed class-action settlement Sprint has agreed to provide departing Sprint PCS customers with the code to unlock their cell phones' software.  This will allow the cell phones to operate on other networks using CDMA (Code Division Multiple Access Technology) as long as the handset met the networks' technical standards.Sprint's Nextel phones which use iDEN technology cant be switched to AT&T or T-Mobile because they use GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication) technology. When looking back over the past six races namely the previous six chase races, they have all been interesting in one way or another. Starting off in New Hampshire which I watched from live in person in the pit area and on top of the #29 Shell pitbox was not what it was in past seasons, but in the same respect it showed that one team is a chase contender being Clint Bowyer, who dominated the field throughout the day and picked up his first career victory.However, Dover was completely different and ironicly has been the theme for the chase races so far with the exception of New Hampshire, Dover was a game of survival with Carl Edwards being victorious and with that victory also fined and docked 25 points for right rear being too low which was the right call by NASCAR. First up is Nextel Cup: Is it a two-man race for the Nextel Cup going into Charlotte? This question was asked a couple of nights ago on NASCAR Now and I really think it deserves a classic answer, simply put NO way, its not just a two-man race (being last weekends Talladega winner Jeff Gordon leading by 9 points of his Hendrick teammate Jimmie Johnson.). There is still six races left in the chase, I will say that both Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson are had chargers right now and seem to be unbeatable at times, but I wouldn’t count out any driver in the top 6.At this time last season, Jimmie Johnson was a full race out of the lead by -156 points behind Jeff Burton going into Charlotte and we all know he won the championship by 56 points over second place Matt Kenseth. Sleeping Monster Wakes Up 14 Laps Too Soon It appeared that the Monster took the weekend off, but 14 laps from the finish six Dodges were collected in a 12-car-accident. It would be physically impossible to top the amount of idocy that I have had to deal with at the hands of your customer service and order processing reps.In addition to the previous complaints you have now:-told me that you were unable to verify my order and it would be cancelled-deactivated the phone that will be replaced before the replacement phone arrived-disabled voicemail on the deactivated phone-told me that there was nothing Nextel could do to return the voicemail to that phone and it was something that had to be programmed on the phone itself.-told me that your "Executive Office" would call me back 4 hours ago and I'm still waiting.Nice job yet again!

Ha-ha! I got a call from the "Executive Office"* and they said that they'll track everything to make sure that I get my order. (*Which is fancy CS lingo for a special service team at yet another call center to handle the people that make it further than your standard call center.)I responded with "I know I'm going to get my order. My issue has gone way beyond a simple replacement. I have 30 phones and right now no faith in the service Nextel is able to provide. I want reassurance from Nextel that they are going to review this issue, and the thousands like it, and actually take action. I am a very dissatisfied customer. I manage 30 Nextel lines and subsequent equipment for our property management office. I placed an order on 4/18 for a new phone for an existing line of service. This phone was shipped via FedEx without the company name on the shipping label. FedEx returned it as undeliverable. I called this morning to find out the status of my order and discovered this error. I have spoken with numerous people in different departments and service capacities. Not one person has been able to resolve my issue satisfactorily. I have been told that the promotional price of $279.99 is not available because I already renewed our service with the previous order and this replacement would be billed at $349.99. It took me over two hours to find someone that would be willing to offer me the promotional price but this order wouldn't be processed until the returned phone was received and verified to be in good condition. Burton win Spring Texas race in great fashion. (Image Credit: Motorsport.com)What an interesting race, for what looked like was going to be a long and drawn out 500 mile race with a couple of lead changes with big leads, this race sure had a change in fortunes not even counting the lap 1-2 air born crash on the front strength and it all happened with Stewart and Montoya racing hard for position.On lap 240, the first of a huge change in fortunes took place just after racing hard for position, Montoya drove down deep into turn 3 on the inside of Stewart, got loose and slipped up into the #20 car and Stewart spun out which collected Jimmie Johnson (which was already having engine problems) sending them both to the pits, Johnson was out and Stewart repaired and came back out.Don’t see Tony Stewart at fault here, you can either mark this as Montoya’s fault or like am, a racing deal.
