The NEW New Deal: Dead on Arrival (not green, just red)
From George Washington-  Like all Americans, I was raised to believe that the "New Deal" got us out of the Great Depression. But a team of UCLA economists have determined that some of FDR's policies prolonged the depression by 7 years. Proponents of the Austrian school of economics have been saying this for decades. The smart money is calling the New New Deal dead on arrival. For example,

In a League of his Own: Elite TE Cooley Agrees to New Deal
It’s not so often that a player nicknamed “Captain Chaos” would be seeking a long-term deal. TE Chris Cooley got just what he wanted Saturday, signing a six-year, $30 million contract extension with the Washington Redskins. The contract includes $14 million in guaranteed money for the player whose colorful outfits and intensity are matched only by his consistency and ability as the Redskins’ best offensive weapon. Cooley caught 57 passes for 734 yards and six touchdowns last season and led all NFL tight ends in yards after the catch (7.35) and yards after contact (4.1). “It feels so good,” Cooley said. “My biggest worry was that I just wanted to be here. I can play my whole career with the Redskins; that’s an unbelievable thing.” A third-round draft pick from Utah State in 2004, Cooley, an ironman, has made 165 catches for 1,822 yards over three seasons, and has yet to miss a game.  He is the NFC’s best TE and is only

Johnson Says He’ll Sit Out Season If No New Deal Comes From KC
The holdout of Chiefs running back Larry Johnson will continue, as the back and the team are still nowhere where they need to be in terms of coming to a deal for the upcoming season. Johnson is invovled in a bitter holdout, as he is under contract to the Chiefs, yet feels that he should get a contract extension that should pay him what he feels he is worth. The Chiefs feel another way about the situation, and with the recent comeback to the team of running back Preist Holmes, that only serves to put more distance in the situation. Johnson recently spoke to ESPN, and stated that he is ready to sit out the season if need be. Click below to hear a portion of the interview done with Johnson.

Jets SS Rhodes in Line For New Deal; Clarke to Start at LG
Jets safety Kerry Rhodes, on the verge of perennial All-Pro status, has visibly outplayed his rookie deal. He has two years left at the minimum salary, and it makes sense to lock him up with a long-term deal before his asking price hits the roof, but that could be a "sticky” situation. The Jets are telling upset LG Pete Kendall they won’t re-do his current contract because it has more than one year remaining. If they turn around and give Rhodes a new extension, it will open some eyes in the locker room. Rhodes Situation: This disruptive, (5 sacks) strong hitting (3 forced fumbles and 2nd leading tackler), ball hawk (4 Int's and 13 PD's) out of Louisville is the Jets second best defensive playmaker next to All-Pro LB Jonathan Vilma. At 6-foot 3, 210 pounds, Rhodes was a late, fourth pick in '05, stepping in right away, starting at Strong Safety. He recorded 106 tackles in his rookie year and continued to progress last season. I would be surprised if he does not make the

Despite No New Deal - Strahan Expected to be at Giants Camp Thursday
Despite lots of talk about it over the last several months, it appears that Giants defensive end Michael Strahan will not be holding out of Giants camp and will be in uniform with the rest of his teammates when they take the field on Thursday. There was talk about Strahan not showing up in hopes of trying to grab the teams attention to increase his $4 million dollar salary, but that now appears to be an afterthought. “I’m not worried about that at all,” Giants GM Jerry Reese told the New York Daily News. “That’s been rumored since the very beginning. I don’t anticipate that happening. But you try to prepare for anything that can happen. If that does happen, we’ll be prepared for it.” Of course there is always the shot that that often controversial Strahan will change his mind at the last minute and decide a holdout is in order, as he has made it known that he is unhappy with the amount of money that he is making with Big Blue. Chiefs, Johnson in standoff over new deal
Right now the two sides are $14 million in guaranteed money apart. Neither is in a compromising mood. Should the staredown continue, speculation about a trade will increase. Reported by Adam Schefter <<<Hotwire>>> While both sides continue to stand their ground, I’m not overly concerned about this even with training camp around the corner. The Chiefs need to get something done quickly to prevent a hold out. This team has lost some stability at the quarterback position and the offensive line. The Chiefs season lies in the hands of #27. Johnson’s average draft position is 3rd overall, just behind LT and Steven Jackson.

Titans Coach Fisher Expects and Deserves a New Deal
One season after being on the hot seat as far as coaches go in the NFL, Titans head coach Jeff Fisher is now looking to get a new deal to say with the Titans long-term.  Fisher is in the final year of his contract, but sources say that he thinks he and the team are going to be able without much haggling to get a new deal in place. “I expect it to get done,” Fisher said in Thursday’s edition of The Tennessean. “I would say the same thing I’ve been saying: negotiations are progressing. Nobody’s put a timetable on anything and we’re just moving forward. I don’t anticipate any problems and I fully expect to be here.”  Of course if there is any issues with getting Fisher signed, there will be plenty of teams out there that would love to have him as their coach.  The short list includes the usual suspects of teams whose coaches likely won’t be around in 2008 - Cleveland’s Romeo Crennel, Tom Coughlin in New York with the

The St.Louis Rams began the 2006 hot with new head coach Scott Linehan and company having a new attitude than that of the “Greatest Show on Turf” of the 90’s.  One player that had a solid year in 06 and has been solid thoughout his Rams career is QB Marc Bluger, and now with the final year of his contract coming up, it’s time for the Rams to give Bulger his due.  Last season may have been Bulger’s best, throwing for 4301 yards, 24 TD’s and 8 interceptions.  His Rams career has been a very solid one, throwing for 95 TD’s and 59 intercpetions.  He has thrown for 16,233 yards in six seasons, averaging over 2705 yards per year. The 30-year-old is entering the last year of a four-year deal worth $19.1 million.  The signing of Bugler is tops on the Rams list of things to do. “I know we’re really, really close to getting something done, and I want to be a part of it,” Bulger stated.  The Rams know that they do not want to let t
