An injury to the same hand put him on the disabled list last month, and this time he's expected to miss between four and six weeks while he recovers. The Nationals still have backups Johnny Estrada and Wil Nieves to put behind the plate. A roster move is expected to be made before Friday night's home game against Florida.

Nationals Cool Off Astros with 8-3 Win
Rob Mackowiak went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and Willie Harris also went deep as the Nationals knocked off the Astros 8-3 at Minute Maid Park. Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and scored twice for Washington, which extended a 2-1 lead with two in the sixth and three in the eighth. John Lannan allowed seven hits and one run over six innings to even his record at 3-and-3 with the win. Brandon Backe struck out nine, but allowed four runs in six frames to fall to 2-and-4 with the loss. Hunter Pence, Carlos Lee and Ty Wigginton knocked in runs for Houston, which had won five straight and six of its previous seven games.

      Game 31 Recap--Pirates 2 Nationals 5
[Recap]This isn't good.I stated earlier that the Pirates had a big opportunity to pick up some wins and inch towards .500 with 4 games at Washington and 3 at home vs. San Francisco.Losing 3 of 4 to the Nats is not a good way to start. Before today, I was upset we wouldn't be doing any better than a split. Turned out a lot worse.Ian Snell had a rough first inning. He got a little better, going 6+ and allowing 4 runs. Considering the way the Pirates have been hitting lately, that seems like it should be good enough for a win, right?Nope. The Pirates' top offensive producer today was Adam LaRoche. Enough said. (Well, he did have three hits, a homer, and RBI double, but he drove in the only two Pirate runs.)The good? We're still not in last place because Cincy got pounded. Nobody is going to no

Pirates (12-18) at Nationals (13-18)1:35--Nationals Park, WashingtonIan Snell (2-1,4.71) vs. Tim Redding (2-2, 4.50)[GameTrax]--Another afternoon game. These have their ups and downs but I'm starting to get tired of them.Snell is the ideal guy to take the hill for the Pirates today. He needs to get out there, take care of business, and head back home with a win. In a position like this, the Pirates can't afford to let Washington beat them 3 out of 4 times. In wonderful, long-awaited news, Sean Burnett has finally been called up. It's more or less of an outrage that this hasn't happened sooner with the struggles of certain pitchers on the staff, but I'm glad he's here. Sean carries an 0.98 ERA with him out of Indy. Evan Meek was designated for assignment, and could possibly be gone for good.

      Game 30 Recap--Pirates 8 Nationals 9
[Recap] The Pirates have played a bunch of crazy games this year. This one was no exception. Basically, all you need to know about this one was that my prediction was dead-on. Maholm has been great. Chico stinks. Somehow, though, the Nationals win. Well, the Pirates would eventually get their licks off Chico, even though they looked bad early on. Chico did not go 5 innings and allowed 5 runs. Maholm was almost equally bad. He gave up a single and homer to open the game, then three more in the 2nd. Maholm would pitch better, going into the 6th after that, but in that 6th he allowed the first two hitters to reach base, and both scored when Osoria took over the reigns. The Pirates rallied from being down 5-1, and the Nationals quickly made it 9-5 with a flurry of runs off Osor

Pirates (12-17) at Nationals (12-18) 1:05--Nationals Park, Washington Paul Maholm (2-2, 3.26) vs. Matt Chico (0-5, 7.00) [GameTrax] It's a rare Saturday afternoon game for the Pirates. They'll look to continue were they left off last night against the Nationals, and it looks like they might be able to do that. Why? The pitching matchup. Maholm has been great, especially lately (he threw a 2-hit CG on Sunday), and Matt Chico of the Nats may be the majors' worst pitcher. 0-5 is Matt Morris-esque, and a 7 ERA isn't pretty either. The best reason for hope if you're a Nats fan: the Bucs stink against lefties (but they didn't last night). It's hard to come of for a reason why the Pirates will lose today, except for that they're the Pirates. The teams will wear Homestead Grays uniforms tod

      Game 29 Recap--Pirates 11 Nationals 4
[Recap] We can say this regarding Phil Dumatrait taking Matt Morris' rotation spot: It no longer means an automatic loss every 5 games. Dumatrait actually came out throwing, opening the game with two perfect innings and giving up a run in the 3rd. Then, the lights went out. Literally. There was a 25 minute delay in the 4th at brand-new Nationals Park because many of the stadium lights suddenly malfunctioned. Dumatrait remained in the game and quickly gave up 3 more runs. He would be lifted. Luckily, that didn't matter, because the offense came out swinging against John Lannan. Well, sort of. They worked Lannan beyond belief, and eventually got through for 6 runs in the 3rd, capped by a Bautista 3-run bomb. Lannan looked terrible for a guy who had thrown 20 scoreless innings in a r

Tonight Phil will make his debut as Matt Morris' replacement in the starting rotation, and most Pirate fans don't seem to be enthusiastic about this at all. I don't quite agree with them. Although Dumatrait was terrible as a starter for the Reds last season, he has made great strides in the Bucco bullpen this year. His ERA is at a very respectable 3.92, and his only loss came in the extra-inning marathon with the Cubs. My biggest concern is how long he'll hold up--he hasn't thrown too many pitches at once this year, and despite being a starter last season, well, he only averaged 3 innings

      Game 28 Recap--Pirates 2 Nationals 3
[Box] Another tough one to swallow. The Washington staff held us to 3 hits. 2 were solo homers (Doumit and Sanchez). Poor work on offense tonight. Zach Duke--great job. He put two men on in the 2nd, and they came home on a ground ball single through a drawn-in infield. That was all Duke would allow in 7 great innings of work. John Grabow came in to relieve--he gave up a hit, hit a batter, and Austin Kearns drove home the go-ahead run in the 8th for the 1st run Grabow allowed all year. The Bucs hit two balls hard in the 9th, but right at Nationals. Grabow and the Bucs take a tough, tough loss, 3-2. Dang.

Pirates (11-16) at Nationals (11-17)7:10--Nationals Park, WashingtonZach Duke (0-2, 5.34) vs. Odalis Perez (0-3, 3.58)[GameTrax] [wnymedia.net]Nationals Park is the newest stadium in baseball. It features views of Washington D.C. landmarks and such. Pretty fancy place compared to old RFKStadium (where the Bucs were just 3-6).The Nats, meanwhile, can't quite say the same. Although they started the year 3-0 and are on a 3 game winning streak heading into this one, they still lug a worse record than the Pirates into May. Odalis Perez has pitched well despite an 0-3 record, but hasn't had run support. It also makes for an interesting fact: He's the second O. Perez the Pirates are facing in a row.Hopefully the result is similar.Duke needs to get his season back on track. His year started off en

      Lannan, Nationals Blank Cubbies 2-0
John Lannan hurled seven innings of four-hit, shutout ball as the Nationals downed the Cubs 2-0 in the rubber game of their three-game series at Nationals Park. Wil Nieves and Wily Mo Pena both swatted singles to collect an RBI apiece. Jon Rauch pitched a perfect ninth for his fourth save. Ted Lilly suffered the loss, despite a strong outing, yielding just two runs on four hits in six innings. Lilly struck out seven, but still fell to 1-4 on the season. Reed Johnson, Kosuke Fukudome, Ronny Cedeno, and Henry Blanco accounted for the four Chicago hits.

Olson Pitches 7 Strong Innings, Leads Marlins Past Nationals 6-1
Last season, Florida Marlins starting pitcher Scott Olsen had a terrible year, going 10-15 with a 5.81 ERA (awfully high for an National League starting pitcher). This season, he has reverted somewhat to his old self; in Sunday's game, Olsen pitched 7 strong innings, leading Florida to a 6-1 victory over the Washington Nationals at Dolphin Stadium. Florida was led by Hanley Ramirez as he went 2-for-5 with 2 home runs, 2 runs scored and 3 RBIs while Dan Uggla and Jorge Cantu also added 2 hits apiece - with Cantu hitting 2 doubles. The winning pitcher was the aforementioned Olsen (3-0) as he pitched 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits, an earned run, walking 2 while striking out 3. Washington was led by Austin Kearns who went 1-for-4 with a HR, a run scored and an RBI. Luis Ayala (0-1) took the

      Diagnosing the Nationals
So, about that big fancy new ballpark . . . .The seats and crowd: Based on opening night, tonight's game and conversations with others, my seats are pretty gosh darn awesome. And, though you wouldn't know it from TV, my section -- the front of the upper deck, just behind home plate -- was pretty full. Actually, a lot of sections looked pretty full -- but the announced attendance was only 24,549, way less than the capacity of 41,000. I thought that number was surprisingly low, considering that tonight was the first night with a spring-like game-time temperature and no rain in the forecast. Then again, it was the Marlins on a school night -- and the team is losing. But more on that later. The places that looked empty are the ones (1) out in the outfield; (2) higher up and down the lin

With Jimmy Rollins on third and one out, the Nats walked Chase Utley and Ryan Howard to get to Werth. Pedro Feliz was 2-for-5 with two RBI and Chris Coste homered as Philadelphia won its first game of the season. Clay Condrey struck out two in his lone inning of work to get the win. After Washington jumped out to a five-run lead in the first, the Phils used a six-run sixth to take a 7-6 lead. Cristian Guzman, Lastings Milledge and Jesus Flores each had three hits for the Nats in the loss. Jesus Colome was the loser, surrendering two hits and four walks along with the winning run.
