Richard Childress always tells his drivers that luck occurs when preparation meets opportunity. Clint Bowyer proved the boss right on Saturday night. Bowyer was a surprise winner at Richmond International Raceway, stealing a win that first seemed destined for Denny Hamlin, then Dale Earnhardt Jr. Neither made it to Victory Lane, though, because of a wild ending that saw three drivers denied the trip Bowyer made to Victory Lane.Hamlin, the hometown favorite, ran away with the race and led a record 381 of the 400 laps in search of his first Cup victory at Richmond. Nobody came close to challenging him until a leaking right front tire allowed Earnhardt and Kyle Busch to catch him.The two drivers split Hamlin as they moved past him, with Earnhardt emerging as the leader with 18 laps to go. Any place, any time, any way necessary. Kyle Busch went from a lap down to a winner at a track that has haunted him. And when things are going your way, as they are for Busch, you also catch a break when you need it. Busch was leading the Aaron's 499 on the last lap, the potential sucker hole at Talladega, but a 12-car crash behind him brought out the caution and ended the race. The green-white-checkered rule doesn't apply if the caution comes out after the white flag.

What do you think about restrictor plate racing at Talladega and Daytona in NASCAR?
Let me state the obvious, I am not a restrictor plate racing fan and while I don’t hate it, I don't like it too much neither. The good news is that it is only run four times a year, I would describe it as a giant chess match and with the giant chess match, there is always the fear of "The Big One" that is caused half the time by aggressive driving or just that one stupid move. I do enjoy watching both the Daytona 500 and the Pepsi 400, you have to have a handling racecar to win Daytona and there is more control there. So far in 2008, I would rate the Daytona 500 in the top 3 best races of the season, along with Phoenix and Bristol. However as for Talladega, that's a completely different story, at times it’s hard to watch a race at Talladega whether it’s the Nationwide Series or Cup Se

30/03/2008: Nascar Goodys Cool Orange 500 Martinsville
Denny Hamlin hopes he's finally put his frustration behind him, not only at Martinsville Speedway, but throughout the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series. Hamlin had twice finished in the top three on the smallest, tightest track in the series, and said he felt like bad luck had let several other wins slip away, too. At Atlanta three weeks ago, he had just moved into second place when his power steering failed. Then in the last race at Bristol, a fuel pickup problem on the restart of a two-lap sprint to the finish cost him a chance to win, and he finished sixth. For 389 laps, the race looked like it would be another victory for Hendrick Motorsports at the track it has dominated by winning eight of the last 10 races. Hendrick drivers led 371 of those laps, but Hamlin and fellow Virginia native Bur

The success, the top 35 battle and the struggles after five races in NASCAR’s Cup Series.
With a much needed off weekend for the drivers and teams that falls just after the five races of the 2008 season, NASCAR fans have already begun to see the top contenders emerge for not only the race victories, but also for the Chase for Sprint Cup and at least in my opinion, the results are surprising in some ways, remember it’s not about where you start the race, but were you finish and some drivers just can’t seem to endore the entire race for whatever reason. So far the top contenders, the successful one’s seems to be with all four manufacturers, starting first would be Toyota, I know that some fans didn’t want to see that, but it is what it is and Toyota’s Motorsports program at least in NASCAR is paying off. The Gibbs drivers (Kyle Busch, Tony Stewart and Denny Hamlin) don

16/03/2008: Nascar Food City 500 Bristol
Jeff Burton wins the 2008 Food City 500 at Bristol. He became visibly upset in August when it was suggested that the newly resurfaced Bristol Motor Speedway had gone from one of NASCAR's most exciting tracks to one of the most boring. It didn't seem so ridiculous with three laps left in Sunday's scheduled 500-lap race at what is advertised as the "world's fastest half-mile." Other than a few spinouts and minor incidents, the world's best stock car drivers might as well have been at California Speedway, there was so little drama. Kevin Harvick got into the side of Tony Stewart's car trying to pass inside for second place. That sent Stewart first into a spin, then into a verbal tirade. On the ensuing green-white-checkered finish, Burton flew past Stewart's Joe Gibbs Racing teamm

One year later for NASCAR's COT – Is it any better and what is the future?
At this time last year, drivers, teams, owners, media and the fans were all talking about what was about to be introduced, the controversial Car of Tomorrow, it was NASCAR’s answer to controlling the series better including limiting changes that crew chiefs could make to their cars and to save the teams money, having the same car run on all four types of racetrack, so what would be the future for this ugly, yet more safer car for the Cup Series?Last Year after the conclusion of the Bristol race, I wrote this:“Despite throwing the COT in the mix, I really didn’t see a difference between yesterday’s race and years past. The action was all the same, beating and banging for 500 laps and if at the end you were within the top 3 spots, you had a shot to win. Most of this race was dominated

What is the biggest story to start the 2008 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series season?
When it comes to picking the biggest story so far this season, that’s a tough one considering all that had gone on in just the first four races (Daytona, Monday in California, Las Vegas and Atlanta), so what are the top four?First, the manufacturer war between not just Chevrolet and Toyota, but Ford and Dodge has started to step up too. When Toyota signed Joe Gibbs Racing last year, it gave Toyota a huge piece of the puzzle that they were looking for to compete with the Detroit big three on a weekly basis and since the beginning of the season at Daytona, all four manufacturers – Chevrolet, Ford, Dodge and Toyota have all been running up front, first Dodge won at Daytona with Ryan Newman, then Ford won with Carl Edwards back-to-back races at California and Las Vegas and just this past we

Toyota general manager Lee White stood just inside the iron fence that surrounds Victory Lane at Atlanta Motor Speedway on Sunday and watched Kyle Busch celebrate the first Sprint Cup win for the foreign manufacturer. Somewhat overshadowing Busch's first win with Joe Gibbs Racing were the overwhelming complaints about the hard tires Goodyear brought to the new car's first trip to the 1.54-mile speedway.Second-place Tony Stewart, Busch's teammate, went so far as to say Goodyear should pull out of the sport and let Hoosier or Firestone build tires if Goodyear can't do better. Third-place Dale Earnhardt Jr. was so frustrated he was thinking of attending a Goodyear tire test on Monday at Darlington, even though he's not one of the drivers scheduled to attend.

Everybody loses with NASCAR’s one size fits all penalties for COT infractions.
So far in the record books, NASCAR has been running the COT for 16 races last season as an introduction to getting teams, drivers, fans and even NASCAR a custom to this new monster and now, as we sit three races into this season (19 COT races total), two things are for sure, 1) the racing has gotten better with the addition of the COT and 2) the penalties are just like the COT, one size fits all and on both sides of that, neither way works. The one size fits all for templates are giving no real identity to each manufacturer besides decals, however that isn’t the subject right now, it’s the penalties issue that seems to be popping up several times over the past several months, to date, NASCAR has handed down five penalties at least that I remember for COT related issues which basically m

NASCAR finds 'issue' with 99 in post-race inspection
LAS VEGAS -- Carl Edwards' Sprint Cup victory in the UAW-Dodge 400 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway will stand, but he's likely to lose some of the driver and owner points he earned after NASCAR officials found "an issue" with his No. 99 Ford in post-race inspection late Sunday.NASCAR spokesman Ramsey Poston said Edwards' car did not fail post-race inspection. But inspectors did find something amiss."We had an issue in post-race inspection with the 99. The lid on the oil reservoir encasement, or the oil tank box, was off," Poston said. "So we're going to take the 99 back to the [NASCAR] Research and Development Center in Concord, N.C., and if there are any actions that need to be taken, those will be taken and announced next week."Earlier this season at Daytona International Speedway, NASCAR of

Was NASCAR’s penalty issued against Robby Gordon after Daytona fair?
It’s a simple question and yet what a reaction that this penalty has received from fans, sponsors, drivers and people in the NASCAR community including t-shirts, banners, petition and more.So if you haven’t heard, this past Wednesday, NASCAR handed down a heavy penalty against Robby Gordon for an unapproved nose piece that was discovered on opening day during the inspection at Daytona, the penalty is 100 driver points and 100 owner points, the crew chief is suspended for 6 races, fined $100k and put on probation until December 31st.Robby Gordon is saying on his website that: This was an innocent mistake made by someone not even on my team. Will the 2008 NASCAR season be a duel between Hendrick in Chevrolet vs Gibbs in Toyota?
Normally, I really wouldn’t want to make a prediction this bold on a season that really hasn’t started yet, however based on what I have seen in the past week and taking the last couple of years into account, I would have to say YES, the odds are in there favor. When you look at Speedweeks in Daytona as of right now (Friday night), before the two big races, the week has belonged to both of these manufacturers and teams in huge ways.Starting with the Sprint Cup Series, the Budweiser Shootout showed three things, first the racing so far with this new car is getting better, some including Dale Jr. have said that this car handles more like the cars of old, very loss… and in a lot of cases, that’s what we wanted right? Global Nascar, an interesting proposition
The official start of the 2008 Nascar season is just around the corner. This means new faces, new teams, and even a new name (the Sprint Cup). But it seems like the routine has changed. Throughout the years, new faces have come and gone, and Nascar has grown into a national spectacle with drivers from all around who have upped the level of competition like this series has never seen. However, this is a known fact. Nascar is no longer a southern hobby, it is a national sport. The news now is, its gone globald... a new term in the vocabulary of good old Nascar. The trend began last year with the arrival of F1 superstar and former Cart and Indy 500 champion Juan Pablo Montoya. His incursion into the world of Nascar began a little less spectacular than some expected, he finished 20th in t

What should the identity of NASCAR’s Nationwide (formally Busch) Series be?
The NASCAR Nationwide Series, NASCAR’s second major racing series, which in some cases is also referred to as a stepping series to the Cup Series. For the past year or so, I have been thinking about this subject and in turn reading just what fans, writers, drivers and even owners comments on this subject and after going to Loudon, NH (NHIS) (like I do every year) to watch the Busch Series in action, I believe that there is no doubt that the series needs a new identity not only because Busch is gone as title sponsor and is replaced with Nationwide, but in general, its still too much like the Cup series.First, would be in naming of series, when you look at NASCAR’s other two major series, they both have that non-changeable names, for example, NASCAR’s elite series is the Cup Series and

Making the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Better.

NASCAR has confirmed that they are considering raising the age limit for Cup Series drivers from the NASCAR standard age 18, to age 21 (Read more…)“My Take”: Looking at the NASCAR age limit that is currently at age 18 for all three series (Truck Series, Nationwide Series and Cup Series) works fine were it is, however that’s not what needs to be changed in the requirements, what should be changed is the experiences level that a driver must have before entering the Cup Series. What do I mean by experience level, well, every driver regardless of what there past driving experience is whether it’s a former Formula winner or champion, an IRL champion, an Indy 500 winner or even a Rolex 24 winner should be required to be at least 18 years old and have a minimum of two (2) full years comp

NASCAR and Penske miss use championship provisional and owner points.
Championship provisional and owner's points in NASCAR's elite series the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series is a hot topic right now considering that the top 35 in owner's points are locked in to the each race, which is basically a golden pass to just run a qualifying lap to determine were you start the race and not to see if you make the race or not.Several teams over the years have been using these six championship provisional as a way to get there car in the field by hiring a former Sprint-Nextel-Winston Cup Series champion to drive there car and if that car don't make it in, then the most recent champion can use the provisional - example: Bill Elliott in the #21 Wood Brother's Ford subbing for Ken Schrader while the #21 was outside the owner's points.NASCAR has even seen the owner's points sold to other teams or given to other teams as the result of a merger - examples: first, Michael Waltrip back at the beginning of 2006 and second, as a result of the DEI-Ginn merger, the
