If Congressman Nick Lampson (D-Stafford) is able to hold off GOP also-ran Pete Olson this fall (and it looks more and more like he will), he’ll be next in line to take over the House subcommittee overseeing NASA operations:
The House Democratic leadership is trying to help Rep. Nick Lampson survive a tough re-election fight by advertising that he would be in line to take over the subcommittee overseeing NASA next year — if he wins in November.
The rare pre-election commitment by allies to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., underscores efforts on Capitol Hill to strengthen the Stafford Democrat’s bid for a second two-year term in a Republican-leaning district long represented by Tom DeLay, the former House Majority leader.
Of course, also-ran Olson doesn’t think much of tha
One of the weirdest news releases recently comes from NASA, who are thankfully maintaining that the world is still safe from asteroids for the time being, despite the calculations of a young German student. The Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory has not changed its current estimates for the very low probability (1 in 45,000) of an Earth impact by the asteroid Apophis in 2036.Contrary to recent press reports, NASA offices involved in near-Earth object research were not contacted and have had no correspondence with a young German student, who claims the Apophis impact probability is far higher than the current estimate. This student's conclusion reportedly is based on the possibility of a collision with an artificial satellite during the asteroid's close appro

La NASA habría admitido an

The earth is doomed unless we do more to reduce carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Head of the Nasa Goddard Institute for Space Studies in New York, James Hansen, told the EU that their 550 parts per million of C02 was simply not good enough, and should be slashed down to 350 ppm. Europe’s 550 ppm target is already the world’s most rigorous, with countries like the US and China not even coming close to this figure. Hansen is convinced that levels need to be drastically reduced if, "humanity wishes to preserve a planet similar to that on which civilization developed".
The new figure of 350 ppm is a number that scientists have developed after dredging up large amounts of muddy crap from the bottom of the ocean to study the levels of Co2 present in it. Wh

NASA Reports Massive Job Cuts After Shuttle Retirement In 2010
The impact of retiring the Space Shuttle in 2010 could cost thousands of NASA contractors their jobs, the agency said in a report on Tuesday. As much as 8,000 contractor jobs could be lost by 2011, after the program ends, but the number of civil service workers should remain roughly the same.

Take a peek at this recently released NASA video of the most advanced RC (radio controlled) model plane. The 10-minute video documents the perfect flight of Skyray 48, the Boeing-NASA prototype of what could be the future of commercial aviation. Designs derived from the X-48B will have less power consumption and fewer emissions, while increasing carrying capacity and speed compared with current cargo and passenger aircraft. The plane took off last year from NASA's Dryden Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, in California, controlled from the ground by Boeing pilot Norm Howell.
NASA does it right. Okay, maybe not, but for those of you interested in how space travel really looks right now you should watch this video of spaceflight STS-122 doing a pitch maneuver. The interesting thing about this is that space travel isn't all flying around and shooting off like we see in the movies. You remember Armageddon? The Bruce Willis flick that attempted to do what Deep Impact did right, but was more successful because it gave us a more flashy, exciting picture with oddball characters (albeit and unrealistic picture).Well, in that film we saw the two ships, which aren't that much different from what we see in the space shuttles today, take off at wild speeds, swooshing and zipping around as if they were in the air. While it was certainly beautiful to watch (who doesn't

Answering bold questions about life and climate on Earth and other planets is the goal behind a new Space Act Agreement signed today between NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and Northrop Grumman's Electronic Systems sector in a ceremony in the Miller Senate Building, Presidential Conference Center West at the Maryland State Capitol in Annapolis.Through the agreement, researchers from the two Maryland-based organizations will collaborate on the development of advanced civil radar system architectures that can be leveraged into new space-based remote sensing instruments with revolutionary performance characteristics. These systems will help scientists measure with far greater accuracy, precision, and detail such things as the three-dimensional structure of Mars and other planets and heavenly

The tallest mountain in the world, Mount Everest, is 29,035 feet (8,850 metres). In comparison, most commercial jet airliners fly at 30,000 to 35,000 feet (9,144 to 10,668 meters). At the summit of Everest most people require oxygen to breathe. The temperature is much colder than at sea level. At the summit of Mount Everest the temperature can be between -100°F and -15°F (-73³C to -26°).
