Life's Little Mysteries: Why Do Women Wear High Heels and Why Did the Kamikaze Pilots Wear Helmets?
In this Daily Mail article, Robert Frank uses economics to explain the situations you encounter in everyday life. For example -- Why do women endure uncomfortable high heels? High heels are uncomfortable and make walking more difficult. But they also increase height, as well as forcing the back to arch, pushing the bosom forward and the buttocks back, thereby accentuating the female form -- and men, apparently, prefer an exaggerated female figure. Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets? In 1944, the Japanese military launched a campaign of kamikaze attacks, in which pilots attempted to crash explosives-laden planes into American warships. Why did these pilots wear helmets for a suicide mission? Planes often experienced severe turbulence before reaching their targets, so they needed to pr

Understanding The Mysteries Of Website Aging
In general, Google gives precedence to older site's in it's results. That is, if two identical sites existed, the older of the two would likely rank higher in the search engine results than other. This makes logical sense, of course. If a website has been up and running for some years it is likely that the webmaster cares enough about it to keep renewing it each year. Equally his visitors like

Solidarity and the mysteries of copyright
Patrick Harrington, currently bosom buddy of the BNP's Nick Griffin and General Secretary of the miniscule and ineffective 'trades union' Solidarity, has launched an attempt to get our friends at Norfolk Unity to remove a picture of the top table at the recent Solidarity AGM by reporting them to Blogger for infringing his copyright.Breaching copyright, as most of us know, is classed as a form of theft - very similar to the theft of a PayPal account and website while hijacking a union or indeed stealing the union itself - and is absolutely identical to pinching the logo of an established and important trades union like the original Solidarity and messing about with it a little before claiming it as ones own.As we have noted before, the hypocrisy of those on the far-right knows no bounds.Wel

Mysteries of the Gods (1976), super rare doc
Botschaft der Götter" or, as it is written in the international version, "The Mysteries of the Gods" is a full length documentary portraying the ancient astronaut theories of Swiss-born researcher Erich von Däniken. The film is hosted and narrated by no less than William Shatner himself.Everything from the Peruvian Crystal Skull to the megalith structures in the jungles of Southeast Asia is accepted as evidence for the AAS theory. Cave drawings, old legends, Biblical stories and even some psychic visions of late Jeane Dixon are understood as stone cold facts. Eric von Däniken's reputation was still quite unspoiled at the time so all the arguments (even the most far-fetched) are shown with a great confidence.William Shatner is–as usual–overacting his part. Are Metaphysical Mysteries Pointless?
What if 90% of all metaphysical speculation is pointless? What if none of that 90% is real, and is just eating up time and resources? What if all the stories of gods and alien visitors are just that -- stories? What if there are no Higher Selves guiding us along a clear-cut path? What if there are no interdimensional travelers in complex spaceships? What if everything that isn't clear, or capable of becoming clear, is meaningless? What if instead, this stuff is real, but all of our speculation still serves no purpose? What if in order for something to matter, to be of use, it must be fully quantified? Sure, speculation leads to testing which leads to fact, but what if instilling faith is really a way to enforce ignorance?

      Cats On Tuesday--Cat Mysteries
Cats are mysterious creatures. They see more and know more than us humans. It's always fascinating for me to observe my cat Anela, for she seems to be more aware of invisible energies. For instance, very often I'll be talking to a friend or family member, and Anela will walk in the room. She will turn her head around and gaze at the door she just walked in, and then her eyes will follow an invisible-to-us something or someone around the room. She won't move, but her intense, focused gaze tells us that she's watching something. She doesn't seem scared or nervous--just interested. We say to ourselves that Anela must be seeing a ghost! The other night she decided that she wanted to go out of our FRONT door THREE times in the course of the evening....and this is something she never demands as s

But this album takes you on a mesmerizing trip into the psyche of a bored and disgruntled housewife who is tired of her mundane existence cleaning the house and tirelessly pushing paper at the office. The Mysteries of Westchester
Two days after my son turned two years old, we left Chicago on a flight to LaGuardia. My husband had already driven the brown Volkswagen Rabbit to our new home, which his job had allotted two days for him to find—a second floor apartment facing the Hudson River in Yonkers. Shortly after we married, his parents had bestowed the "like new" car upon us while Manny was doubling his course load at the U of C, determined to finish his long deferred BA in English before our first child arrived. While I bartended until I grew too unwieldy, he fulfilled his language requirement by taking three different French courses at once, managing to graduate two weeks before holding his newborn son. I paid scant attention to the brown car at first. Manny drove it to and from the U of C, finding it much faster than the el. I drove mostly when it was my turn to secure an eight-hour parking spot within a mile radius of our fifth floor walk-up. After we moved to Yonkers, however, with a rambunctious

      UFO Mysteries
A UFO is a general term used for any "unidentified flying object" in the sky which cannot be discerned by an observer . Most UFOs remain classified as so even after they have been investigated. The UFO phenomenon dates back as far as the beginning of recorded history, but UFO sightings have significantly increased since the mid 1940s.From UFO videos to UFO pictures, stories and other real life accounts, thousands of people from all walks of life claim to have seen these mysterious aerial phantoms. Many UFO sightings turn out to be nothing at all, mere airplanes, meteors or comets; however, many sightings have gone unsolved for decades or even centuries. The term "flying saucer" came into popular use after American Kenneth Arnold claimed a UFO sighting on June 24, 1947 near Mount Rainier, Washington. Arnold claimed to have seen as many as nine brightly lit objects soaring across the sky at speeds he estimated as up to 1200 miles per hour. Arnold also reported that the objects app

Meta Keywords - Myths, Misspellings and Mysteries
In earlier, more innocent times, the meta keywords tag was used by web-designers and website owners to indicate the content of their web pages. Keywords were in use form around 1996 onwards.By 1998, however, Search Engines had wised up to misuse and more cynical practices. The practice of "stuffing" tags with multiple copies of the same word or even with material unrelated to the contents of the web page was all too common and the keywords tag was rendered next to useless.Because, historically, there has been a lot of emphasis put on keywords by website designers, the myth about their importance has continued. A look at any search engine forum or a chat about web-design will quickly encompass the keywords topic. Nowadays, however, there is little emphasis placed on them. According to a test performed by Danny Sullivan of Search Engine Land, Google and Microsoft do not use keywords when a search is made.Inasmuch as it is useful, the keywords tag can be used for misspellings. Time - One of the Great Mysteries of Our Universe
If you can read a clock, you can know the time of day. But no one knows what time itself is. We cannot see it. We cannot touch it. We cannot hear it. We know it only by the way we mark its passing. For all our success in measuring the smallest parts of time, time remains one of the great mysteries of the universe. One way to think about time is to imagine a world without time. There could be no movement, because time and movement cannot be separated.A world without time could exist only as long as there were no changes. For time and change are linked. We know that time has passed when something changes. In the real world - the world with time - changes never stop. Some changes happen only once in a while, like an eclipse of the moon. Others happen repeatedly, like the rising and setting of the sun. Humans always have noted natural events that repeat themselves. When people began to count such events, they began to measure time.In early human history, the only changes that seemed to repeat

The human brain—that three-pound mass of gray and white matter between your ears—is the most complex object in the universe. It contains as many neurons as there are stars in the Milky Way galaxy, and we know as much (or as little) about how they function, as we know about all those stars. This fascinating article from Discover Magazine takes a look at ten of the so far unsolved mysteries of your brain, including: How is information coded in neural activity? Neurons are specialized cells within the brain that produce brief spikes of voltage in their outer membranes. Each neuron in the cortex receives input from as many as 10,000 other neurons. It’s like taking off the cover off a computer, measuring the chatter of high and low voltage between a few transistors and trying to figure out the content of the web page being viewed. Mysteries of the Geek Brain we Will Never Explain
Geeks are famous for being socially inept, and in all honesty, it’s not too surprising. How can we expect other people to understand us if we don’t even understand ourselves very well? Did you ever consider… Why are we such control freaks and such slobs at the same time? A geek will spend hours lining up their CSS style boxes on their websites, yet you usually need a pitchfork to get through their home. Geeks will re-arrange their bookshelves every two weeks, while the refrigerator hasn’t been cleaned out in so long that National Geographic found an endangered species living in it. Why is our memory so selective? We have things like the periodic table of elements and the formula for determining the volume of a sphere memorized, but it’s a coin-toss whether we remembered to pay the electric bill. Why are we so conservative and mature and yet so many of us like comic books? You can go into the office of a top MIT artificial intelligence researcher

      Dawson File mysteries …
Victoria Dawson, the FAMU legal writing director whose error-ridden working paper has caused a stir (see St. Petersburg Times story here), was evidently much appreciated by one of her classes and not  appreciated by another. And the rest of her classes? What did they think? ... Who knows? Interim FAMU Law Dean Ruth Witherspoon told the Times late Friday night that the evaluations for Dawson's other classes were not administered - and she doesn't know why. In Dawson's fall 2006 class, 17 of 20 students enrolled bubbled in the "assessment of instruction" forms, and 12 of them rated Dawson excellent or very good. Dawson got high marks in all 7 categories, ranging from "communication of ideas and information" to "respect and concern for students" to "facilitation of learning." In Dawson's spring class, though, 14 of 20 students responded, and while none rated her excellent or good, 11 rated her poor, with correspondingly low marks in every

      Cat Eyes: Mysteries Revealed
Why do a cat's eyes glow? Can cats see in total darkness? Can they see in color? Why are a cat's eyes so large in comparison with the rest of their bodies? Why are a cat's pupils shaped differently than ours? For thousands of years, cats have been a source of fascination and mystery. Yet it has only been in recent times that many of their secrets have been revealed through modern science and our knowledge of physics and biology. One of the most remarkable features of a cat's anatomy is its large, captivating eyes. Their significant size in relation to the rest of its body is more than a thing of beauty; this size ratio serves an important function. Large eyes allow for more massive internal structures: a larger pupil, lens and retina. This enables additional light to enter the eye, thereby facilitating night-vision. Hence, cats are better suited for low light conditions. Note that owls, bats, and other nocturnal (active during the night) animals also have very pronounced eyes.Cats ha

      Here is to Mysteries
I am sorry that the videos have not been posted for this last weekend. My better half has been sick with an upper respiratory thing and well he hasn't been on the computer. The videos will be posted as soon as he is back on his feet. In the meantime I have some fun for you. Those of you who have been in the shop know how much I love mysteries. My favorite is Jeffrey Deaver but then there are a whole slew of other mystery writers I enjoy as well. I also love mystery movies... My favorite movie of all time is Gosford Park. So if you are a sicko like me then you should really get a kick out of this link. This is something my son sent me. Gave me the creeps because it refers to Boise (where my mother lives) and St. Alphonsus (where my mother works). Anyway, here is to a mystery. I have to admit that I think this particular writer is one of the most creative writers I have read in a while...

UNRAVELING UNIVERSAL MYSTERIES by MANOJ SHARMAThe following are some extracts from the interview between Charlie Rose and Lisa Randall and some thoughts by yours truly.Lisa Randall :We are really trying to understand.. what is the fundamental nature of matter and forces. What are the fundamental forces and why are they related in the way they are. So we are trying to understand more about gravity for example, why is gravity so much weaker than all the other elementary forces we know about. That is to say the three other elementary forces we know about...electro magnetism, weak and strong nuclear forces. Gravity is far weaker, I mean if you think about it, you can pick up a paper clip with a tiny magnet, competing against the entire earth. And the fact that you can jump up and down... I mean gravity is not a strong force although it dominates things and it is only because there is a big mass of object. My Thoughts:Beautiful perspective of the strength and weakness of gravity. It looks like a round glow stick, like the ones you get at concerts. But the glow stick flutters its wings and falls to the marble floor with a quiet thud. It scurries ahead of us, leading the way."Glowing roaches," she says. "If you can't get rid of them, you might as well put them to use." We descend into the shadows, as rows of bookshelves turn mechanically to let us pass. I'm glad the Librarian seems to know where she's going; without her, I'd be completely lost."The Great Library doesn't follow the Dewey Decimal System. This is, in part, because of the predilections of its patron, Juan Rosado I," says the Librarian."Juan Rosado. Founder of the Red Coral Society?""The same. So, you already know Juan's story. 20 Apple iPhone Mysteries
Introduction It’s been almost a month and a half since Steve Jobs gave his now famous iPhone presentation at Macworld 2007. Since then answers to a lot of questions about the Apple iPhone were found, but even more questions still remain. This article is based on publicly available information, as well as information reported by other publications. It discusses the most important things that we don’t know about the Apple iPhone. Apple iPhone Global iPhone Issues - The #1 question that bothers us — will it still be known as the iPhone? Apple is currently in the middle of a legal dispute with Cisco in USA and UK regarding the iPhone trademark, and with Comwave in Canada. If it loses those, it might need to rename the iPhone to something else. iMobile, anyone? - Our #2 is a very interesting question - Cisco demands for “interoperability” between the two iPhones. Cisco’s iPhone is a VOIP Skype phone. Does that mean that if Cisco’s demands are met,

Kabbalistic Mysteries Of The Incense 1
In a previous post describing a ritual I've written for Shabbat (on my Craftwork of A Hewitch blog), incorporating into it elements of witchcraft, the blessing over incense is:Blessed is She, Mistress of the mysteries of spices and perfumes, the One over Death, and She who loves me.Ritually, the smoke of incense represents the element of air. Unlike the other elements, in both Celtic witchcraft and Zohar (an ancient kabbalistic text of the Jewish mystical-magickal tradition), the element of air corresponds to the eastern quarter-watchtower. Among the kabbalistic sefirotic correspondences, the east likewise corresponds to the sefirah Tiferet located along the central (air) axis of the sefirotic array. If we look at the 3-letter root TVL (תבל) for the Hebrew word for "spice", tevel (e.g., incense spices used during Temple service), we see a connection to both the transcendant feminine sefirah Binah (Understanding, the Higher Shechinah) operating above the 7 lower sefirot of normal con

Theory of oscillations may explain biological mysteries
Connect one pendulum to another with a spring, and in time the motions of the two swinging levers will become coordinated. This behavior of coupled oscillators - long a fascination of physicists and mathematicians - also can help biologists seeking to understand such questions as why some locations overflow with plants and animals while others are bereft, University of Michigan theoretical ecologist John Vandermeer (website) maintains. In the cover article for the December issue of the journal BioScience, Vandermeer summarizes theoretical work he has done over the past decade, leading to his conclusion that ecologists seeking to understand complex interactions in nature should pay closer attention to coupled oscillations. The basic idea of oscillating populations is not new to ecology. 'We know that any predator-prey system, say lions and zebras for example, shows oscillations,' said Vandermeer, who is the Margaret Davis Collegiate Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Mysteries Of Toddlerhood
Ok, Ajab just zoomed past his 26th month yesterday and he did the oddest thing. Like all toddlers, only he can decipher the meaning of some of his actions. While playing in the study, he noticed a renegade piece of thread that had escaped the clutches of my vacuum cleaner, rubbed the thread and the carpet on which it lay as if to get rid of the offending thread. Then he decided that it’ll be more fun to pick up the thread …. and put it on his head. I didn’t have much difficulty fishing out the thread (it was yellow) from his thick hair, but why put it on your head, Ajab? It’s not the first time he’s done it too. Trin witnessed him putting some dirt or hairball on his head previously too. Young man, Mummy and Daddy spend time making sure your hair is all lustrous and smelling nice, and you go and put icky stuff on it? *sigh … * Lucky for us, he’s also found another hobby that’s much cleaner and intellectually stimulating - stacking blocks!

The Loch Ness Monster and Other Mysteries of Motherhood
I hate to say it but I'm a skeptic. I refuse to read The Enquirer, I laugh at urban myths, I question most everything that comes to me second hand and--much to the frustrations of my children--believe The Great Mysteries of the World to be nothing more than ghost stories invented to make life more interesting. However, each of my children have gone through a phase of interest in the supernatural where they rabidly check out books on ghosts, Atlantis and other eye-popping monsters that impress a child's mind. A year or two ago Grace came home with a book about documented (and I use that word "documented" rather optimistically) cases of fish falling from the sky. You heard it right, there is an adult out there--somewhere, probably in Las Vegas--who actually sat down and researched a book about fish falling spontaneously and mysteriously from a clear sky.I've enjoyed a good X-Files episode as much as the next guy but I found fish falling from the sky hard enough to swallow that I was

One of his PhD students recently came up with a brilliant idea enabling researchers to get a full view of total ecosystems or populations dating thousands of years back in time.
