Musician Peter Gabriel Shows Us The Need For Full Disk Encryption
Peter Gabriel shows, albeit indirectly and unwittingly, why one needs full disk encryption if data security is the ultimate objective.  Gabriel’s servers that powered his website—hosted at a data center—were stolen.  This affects more than a website with a litany of Gabriel’s accomplishments.  I’ve never been to the site before, and it’s not operating at 100%, obviously, but a look at the temporary stand‑in makes it apparent the stolen servers were at the center for getting all things Gabriel‑related, including the sale of music and concert tickets.   Break-ins into data centers are nothing new.  I’ve heard the entire gamut, from people strolling in while waving at the guard (and the guard waving back, which is why I dropped the word “security

      Brad the award winning musician
Schools out for another year. This year was a bit different to most in that it was the last time that we will be associated with a Primary School. Brad finished at Blackman's Bay this year and will be in Grade 7 at Kingston High School with Emma next year. It's a bit weird saying goodbye to the teachers and staff that you have become so used to over the past 8 or so years. As usual there were a few tears during the leavers assembly, but even I shed a quite tear or two when Brad was announced as the winner of the Arts award. That makes him the best male musician in the school. It came with a $50 gift voucher which was pretty cool as well. Words cannot describe how proud I felt. It was just reward for all of the hard work that Brad has put in during the year on the saxophone and guitar. I had his music teacher at my place one night last week because she had re written a section of The Final Countdown that the Grade 6 band were playing to give Brad a bit of a solo. Brad didn'

The Escorts & The Celebrity Musician
Since her post on the risks of seeing an escort the English Courtesan has had a lot of emails. Today's post, by way of a variation on the theme, is on the risks of brothels in Europe. The tale once again comes from the good old British tabloids, in this case the Daily Mail and German newspaper Bild... In the early hours of Wednesday morning, a photographer snapped Sting leaving a Hamburg brothel called Relax. That's it. No, really, that's the story. The English Courtesan hates to disappoint the readers but there really isn't any more for the tabloids to tell. No stripper or escort girl from Relax has come forward. There are no salacious kiss and tell type details. There have been no public tantrums from Sting's wife Trudie Styler. The story really is that Sting was seen outside a brothel. Not for nothing is August/September known as the newspaper 'silly season' in the UK... ;-)Despite the dubious newsworthiness of the story, the English Courtesan can't help feeling rather sorry

Orchestra musician trading cards - get yours today!
Double bassist Tyler Bakken sent me a link to this story about the Houston Symphony's newest PR idea--trading cards! Kurt Johnson, the violinist mentioned in the following quote, is an old acquaintance of mine. We both attended Northwestern University and played in the Civic Orchestra of Chicago masters degree fellowship program in the late nineties:As a kid and a baseball fan, Kurt Johnson cherished his Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire rookie cards. But even back in his Little League days, Johnson knew his skills on the diamond were not his ticket to trading-card fame. Good thing for the musical talent: It turns out his violin virtuosity earned him a trading card of his own. Johnson, 30, is one of the players featured in the first batch of official trading cards of the Houston Symphony. "It was a real prize," said Johnson, a member of the symphony's first violin section. "All of a sudden they were in my mailbox." The cards that arrived in Johnson's mail were part of a batch of 33 tra

      Christmas Volunteer Musician Syndrome!
By Rhiannon Schmitt Left fingers twitching sickly to the proverbial pulse of “Jingle Bells,” eyes watering from the fog of pine scent and lips stained from countless coats of cherry red lipstick, I demonstrate flawlessly the symptoms of “carolitis,” commonly known as “ Christmas Volunteer Musician Syndrome,” CVMS.This ailment, widespread among music teachers and performers late each western calendar year, first attacks the nervous system (enter twitching hands) then progresses into a brief state of anxiety and consistent lateness to all gigs and lessons (double-booking is common).Once this passes, the afflicted enters the denial phase, (“No, I didn’t take on too much this year!”) but then finally accepts this condition as his/her destiny as a musician and finds ways to cope, such as playing Silent Night in all twelve keys, one after another, for a bit of variety.Extreme cases cause even the bitterest musicians to become giddy and frivolous, gleefully depositing Decemb

Highly recommended reading for anybody interested in the current affairs of the music business... and its futureExcerpt from nytimes.com:In Britain he infuriated retailers by agreeing to have a newspaper, The Mail on Sunday, include the complete “Planet Earth” CD in copies on July 15. (The album is due for American release this Tuesday.) Presumably The Mail paid him something in the range of what he could have earned, much more slowly, through album sales. British fans have remunerated him in other ways. On Aug. 1 he starts a string of no fewer than 21 sold-out arena concerts, 20,000 seats each, at the O2 (formerly the Millennium Dome) in London at the relatively low ticket price of £31.21, about $64. Prince: The Perfumer Formerly Known as a Musician
Celebrity fragrances are big business nowadays. It seems like every celebrity and why-are-they-a-celebrity has a perfume. Britney Spears, Paris Hilton, Jennifer Lopez, Paula Abdul, Jessica Simpson, Hilary Duff, Celine Dion, Antonio Banderas… it’s like a who’s who of fading divas. Their fragrances are never remarkable. When I told my husband that Prince was releasing his own fragrance line, he said, “um, what?” Almost any other celebrity, I would just roll my eyes and ignore it. But Prince is different. He is odd by nature, so this just doesn’t seem odd at all. And all of his odd stuff has (or seems to have) a modicum of thought and quality behind it, so I did not discount Prince. Glad I didn’t. 3121 is a surprisingly complicated scent. An initial sniff made me wary - it was quite heavy, almost oriental, and I am not a fan of either scent. But a quick spritz on the wrist and it immediately mellowed. It was still somewhat heady, but n

I happened to be in Indianapolis, Indiana and was looking for a license branch but couldn't find it, so I decided to stop to ask directions. I chose an American Family Insurance office to stop to ask directions, because I figured that being in the insurance business, they would know where the branch was located. The agent, Mr. Chung, showed me a feature of Google Maps I had never seen before. They actually have satellite views of specific locations and he was able to home in on the branch and actually show me where to park my car. He was VERY accommodating and helpful. We got to talking and I showed him my websites. As if us jazz musician types didn't have it rough to begin with...
Thanks, Louis...Jazz apocrypha states that when Louis Armstrong was asked what jazz is, he replied, "If you have to ask, you'll never know."Great. Make this genre even MORE inaccessible by insulting potential fans. "Hello Dolly" my ASS!!!In the past few years, I really feel that I've opened up my narrow focus of music to include several new genres. I have plenty of people to thank for that (Ed H., my parents, my fellow bandmates...) and I feel that opening up my tastes has made me more well-rounded. Furthermore, it inspires me to learn more about these musicians that I didn't know anything about before. So when I opened up my Washington Post Magazine yesterday over my Sunday McDonald's breakfast feast, I immediately turned to the article about JAZZ and one man's attempt to keep it alive and kicking.Dr. Billy Taylor is a DC metro native (like another jazz great, Duke Ellington...who, oddly enough, is not one of my favorites). He's 85 years old, but he doesn't look as old as o

Who’s the boss in a train’s musician group?
My friend have told me that riding the train everyday makes you meet the same passenger, street-traders (asongan), beggars as well as train’s musicians. This comes to my observation, a train’s musician group who attracts my attention every time they play. They play good dangdut music, skillful as well as serious (they carry all heavy electric equipments). The group’s name is Yunita group as it is written in every property they carried. What makes me interested in observing this group? Once, I saw them arguing each other in front of passengers, some women were scared if the fight really happened. It was over after somebody (later I know him as a group’s leader) made them calm down. Yeah, I missed their show that day.My question after this fight was who’s the boss? This brought me to observe and conclude the roles of each personnel in the group based on what he/she carry and/or play. The group consists of several personnel based on instruments they play namely rhythm guitar, ba

What Do Baseball Great Tom Seaver, Musician Carlos Santana and Porn Star Savanna Samson Have in Common? Hint: It's Red, White and Rose
Take a walk down the aisles of some wine shops and you feel like you are reading Page 6 of the New York Post or you've stumbled into Madame Tussaud's Wax Museum. You will find crooner Frank Sinatra, golfer Arnold Palmer and race car driver Mario Andretti. Rocker Mick Fleetwood, chef Emeril Laggase and actress Marilyn Monroe are there, too. There are wines that are clearly marketing ploys, like the KISS This Red and Elvis Blue Suede Chardonnay. You might laugh at labels turned out for The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Madonna, Bob Dylan and Savanna Samson, but keep in mind that collectors are spending thousands trying to get complete sets of Marilyn Merlot. Fans hunt down bottles carrying the name of NASCAR champion Jeff Gordon, the late Dead front man Jerry Garcia and NFL Hall of Famer Mike Ditka with little regard to the liquid inside. There are some celebrity winemakers that are truly winemakers. Tom Seaver works the fields at his new California venture. Director Francis Ford Copp

Will he be a musician or a conductor?
The outdoor concert we attended tonight.Oronzo and I took Snuggle Bug to an outdoor concert tonight. It's not the first one he's gone to. We've been taking him to these spring/fall concerts (6 in each season) since he was 5 months old.At first, it was simple. We'd wheel Snuggle Bug in his car seat/stroller combo, lay him on our blanket, play cards with our friends until it got dark, eat our picnic basket dinner, drink a bit of wine, and listen to fantastic music. He didn't go anywhere and he'd fall asleep in my arms, so it was no problem.Snuggle Bug started crawling at 7 months, but he didn't like the feel of grass for the longest time, so he wouldn't stray off of our blanket and he still fell asleep in my arms. This spring he's walking and now it's a bit more challenging to take him to these outdoor concerts, but still a lot of fun! Now, Snuggle Bug runs all around our blanket, and weaves in and out of the crowd, pausing to flirt with strangers as one of us follows close behi
