It's musical chairs for international schools
June 16, 2008 UPFRONT It's musical chairs for international schools By Jane Ng WHEN the Canadian International School announced that it had secured a site in Jurong to house students from three of its campuses, a silent cheer went up from some other international schools. They immediately began strategising expansion plans, including the possibility of taking over those campuses at

Instead of my usual round up of links, I guess I’ll share with you some things that I’ve been interested in reading. For instance, did you hear that Vinyl is selling better than cd right now? That’s right, for whatever reasons, more people are buying vinyl records and less people are buying music cd’s. I’m [...]

Most of them would probably rather be preparing for Thanksgiving. The Pasco School Board even had canceled today's meeting, figuring no one would be fully focused with the holiday just around the corner. But the state has mandated Nov. 20 as the date when all 67 school boards in Florida must reorganize and set their salaries for the coming year. So the sessions are back on. Will there be drama? Or will it be a humdrum affair? Hillsborough probably has the biggest potential for a newsy afternoon. Ordinarily, vice chair Jennifer Faliero (left) would be in line for the chairmanship. But she's been controversial of late, as has the entire board, which has thrown bombs at one another and acted much less as a team than in past years. Whether the board will stick with tradition remains to be seen. Pinellas could offer some sparks, too. Veteran member vice chair Janet Clark is in line to lead the board, but newcomer Peggy O'Shea is said to want the seat. Clark hasn't always gone along

      Let The Musical Chairs Begin
It didn’t take long did it; the Spanish season is over and within twenty four hours, Señor Sources, the infamous mole at the Camp Nou, has made sure that the media know they spoke to Arsene Wenger about coming to manage them once Frank Rijkaard takes his expected, ahem, sabbatical. This, of course, is in the unconfirmed meeting that took place in Paris last week that the media assured us was to discuss the sale of Thierry Henry. Obviously it is a cunning plan to get Henry to Barcelona, along with Cesc because they realise it is the only way that any of the three will get there. You could react to this in one of two ways, either get steaming mad or look at it with the view that Arsene must be doing something right in his job and this is affirmation of that. Actually there is a third way. Dismiss it as a load of old codswallop, the story merely a rehash of the Madrid one that was kicking around the summer before he signed his current contract. In fact, with Arsene deciding not to

      Musical Chairs Paris Hilton?
While I, like Elisabeth Hasselbeck, was outraged this morning to hear that Paris Hilton was released from jail to serve her time “imprisoned” in her luxury digs at home… my plate was full and the main course, side dishes and dessert all revolved around hospitals, children and necessities that kept me alas… unable to vent my Hilton Hysteria until now. Imagine the thrill this old fraccy mama got when, in taking a few moments online while the fillings for my homemade perogies were cooling on the counter… I should stumble upon this news bit from E!News. [Quote and credit to E!News] “Hours after Paris Hilton was sprung from jail and placed under house arrest for an unspecified “medical condition,” the Los Angeles City’s Attorney’s Office wants to send her back.Prosecutors filed court papers Thursday evening with the judge who originally sentenced the heiress to 45 days in jail requesting that the country sheriff’s departme

      FAMU trustees, musical chairs
Yet another FAMU trustee has resigned. Regina Benjamin called it quits this week, making her the second trustee to resign this month (along with George Allen) and the fourth to leave in six weeks (along with Jesse Tyson, who was replaced by Gov. Crist appointee Daryl Parks; and Chairwoman Challis Lowe, who decided to step down in the face of political opposition from the state senate.) All four were on the losing end of the 7-6 vote in February to make James Ammons FAMU's new president. Benjamin, an Alabama resident, said in a May 8 letter that she was recently voted president-elect of the Federation of State Medical Boards. "Because this 3-year commitment requires significant time and international travel, I regretfully submit my immediate resignation from the FAMU BOT," she wrote. "I am sorry I will not be a part of the new leadership team that will be working hard to find solutions to the University’s current problems and bringing FAMU to the level of excellence we all know it

Via The Caucus we learn about a recent press release with Senator Collins' name on it:In the last election, the voters said they were sick of the partisanship that produces gridlock. They want us to work together and get things done. So, as a start, instead of sitting on opposite sides of the room like a house divided, we want the American people to see us sitting side by side as our Committee members work together make our nation more secure and our government more efficient.A couple of points are in order.First, since when was the election a referendum against partisanship? It may be pretty for Collins to think so. But back here in the real world, we all know that the midterms represented a stinging rebuke to President Bush and his enablers in Congress.Voters didn't want less gridlock. The wanted to check the power of a Republican party intoxicated by power.Second, while there's nothing wrong with shaking up committee seating assignments--can you think of an emptier gesture? If gr

So, the coaching carousel has begun.  This season has already seen it’s fair share of casualties.  Among them, Jon Bunting, at UNC (I’d add links to the respective coaches being fired, but no one actually clicks on those, do they?), John L. Smith at Michigan State and more recently Larry Coker at Miami, and Mike Shula of Alabama (1 year removed from a 10-2 season btw), and very recently Coach Scelfo has been dismissed from the Tulane football team. Of course, this starts the inevitable process of coaches shifting places, and undoubtedly, one of the coaches will get left out, and go work for espn.  Butch Davis has already accepted the job at UNC (because even HE couldn’t live up to the expectations he himself built up at the U), and speculation is that perhaps Steve Mariucci will be next in like for the Michigan State or Miami jobs.  There has been talk of Miami trying to woo Greg Shiano from Rutgers, but that seems less and less likely. After the jump, we’ll
