The Bluetones, The HedronsDarvel Music Festival, 6th Oct 2007
      - Commonly described as being Britpop survivors, The Bluetones perhaps have more in common with the legendary Japanese soldier still fighting in the jungle not knowing that the war was over years before. Emerging from Hounslow at the peak of Britpop, the Bluetones' first album Expecting to Fly went straight to number one. One single, ?Slight Return? was ubiquitous in the summer of 1996 and ?Bluetonic?, with its jangling riff oddly reminiscent of a pinball machine, sound-tracking Sky Sports' Football League Cup coverage. It also contained the lyric, ?And I can't put my finger/On the time things first went wrong.? For the Bluetones, their time when things first went wrong was after second album Return to the Last Chance Saloon was released into the midst of the Britpop backlash. It did reasonably well, charting at number eleven and providing two more top twenty singles, but it was the band's last fling with genuine commercial success - though they perhaps remain a name at the ba

Isle of MTV Summer Music Festival
Just when you thought the musical extravaganza was over, Malta is bracing itself for the “biggest-ever” music festival for the Isle of MTV summer festival on the Floriana granaries on Thursday. Spanish heart throb Enrique Iglesias, R&B icon Akon and pop-rock band Maroon 5 will each star on the night for a 30- to 40-minute performance. MTV only confirmed the line-up last month to ensure the hottest stars of the moment. In fact, all three stars are dominating most of the Top 10 charts worldwide. The organisers are expecting over 20,000 revellers to swarm to the festival, which is free of charge. Most English language schools have postponed their evening’s activities to enable students to attend the festival. Though the MTV generation normally spans the ages 14-30, Mr Spiteri says that such a big event should reach to a wider audience. “This is going to be the biggest-ever music festival with an A-list line-up.” The government is coughing up €700,000

      Alt.Music Festival in July
Auckland can expect unprecedented levels of diverse sound art and outsider music activity this July with imminent visits from internationally renowned sound artists for this year’s Alt.music festival.Alt.music is an ongoing series of audio events, regularly bringing a vital injection of contemporary sound art from around the world to New Zealand. Organised by the Audio Foundation, Alt.music began as an international festival of experimental music and sound art under ARTSPACE in 2001, followed by successive festivals in 2002 and 2004.Alt.music 2007 does not offer a unifying framework into which a genre (‘sound art’) is neatly packed. Rather, it attempts to disclose an – often clamorous - discursive space in which ongoing debate about what comprises an innovative art of sound can be publicly articulated. Aligned to such utterance is the experiential listening space, which is the ground where sound art thrives and where you, as listener, are given a chance via the live

      Music festival has ended
Last night we had the final concert of the Hot Springs Music Festival. The orchestra played Ma Vlast (Moldau) by Bedrich Smetana, An die schönen blauen Donau by Johann Strauss, and the 8th symphony of Antonin Dvorak. The orchestra, consisting of music students and their mentors, did a great job! Especially the brass was shining that night, much to thanks to inspiring coaching by the trumpet mentor Scott Moore. Besides the concert, I had to witness one remarkable trait of American character. The festival runs mostly on the donations made by private citizens, and before the concert it was announced that there is a "grant challenge" of 5000 USD made by one donor, and for the festival to get it, the audience should be able to match it by their collective donations during the 2 festival weeks. The challenge was short of only something like 500 bucks from the goal, but during that one intermission the audience came up with 4000 USD in donations! Four thousand!!! That means that ev

Music Festival Review: Top Five Offbeat Observations From My Three Sons
      1. Drew: Mom usually doesn’t mind when Porter picks up junk off the ground because he does that everywhere, but she really freaked out when she realized he was carrying this empty bottle. She told us it was called Jagermeister.  She said Jagermeister is an energy drink for animals and the bottle probably had horse germs so Porter had to put it down immediately.  When she said that Daddy started snorting and I saw a booger moving up and down in his nose.  There was a picture of a deer on the label of the bottle, but I didn’t see any animals at the concert.  Well, I saw crawfish, but they were dead and people were eating them. 2. Finn: My brothers and I were at the Chick-fil-A tent getting dinner while Mom bought our drinks.  I saw her talking to a man while she was at the Budweiser tent buying my dad a beer.   I think the man was trying to flirt with her.  I told Daddy, “That man is trying to put the moves on our Mom.”  We got our chicken nuggets and ra

How green can a music festival be?
A “green festival” combining music and outdoor activities is taking place near Aviemore in the Scottish Highlands from 22 - 24 June 2007. The main attractions are JT Tunstall and Crowded House.  There are wildlife walks, mountain bking, rafting, canoeing and rafting.  A weekend pass ticket costs £65, there are additional charges for some activities. There is a car sharing facility online and the venue is within 2 miles of a railway station.  There is a designated quiet camping zone for families or those who are looking for a peaceful night’s sleep away from the main camping area. Does this sort of event appeal to you?  I am not convinced that it is possible to have a gathering of 10,000 people and call it environmentally friendly.  The food served there will be free trade, organic produce in biodegradable packaging. They encourage festival goers to use public transport. I think erecting the stage and toilet/shower blocks etc won’t be good for the environme

      Move! Chicago House Music Festival
America is full of contradictions: it is the "land of the free', but its civil liberties, as we know from Guantanamo Bay, are laughably insecure. New York is billed as "the city that never sleeps', but in the last few years a war on nightlife has led to the closure of tens of the city's nightclubs and bars.Clubbers are vilified by the media, and in 2002 the Senate tried to pass the infamous Reducing Americans' Vulnerability to Ecstasy Act (or R.A.V.E. Act), which if it had become law, made landowners responsible for their patrons drug use.But now Chicago's local authorities have given the thumbs up to the city's first ever house music festival. Illinois' Department of Economic Development and the Bureau of Tourism are supporting Move!, a two-day international house music festival which takes place for the first time this year on 22nd and 23rd July.Move! will feature some of the world's most famous house music DJs such as Danny Tenaglia, Frankie Knuckles, David Mora
