The man who was made famous by his post invasion opposition to the war in Iraq is brushing off Obama’s pre-invasion anti-war stance. John Murtha (D-Pennsylvania) became popular after he spoke out against the war after he was given the gift of hindsight. "Obama had a nice view from the outside. It is easy when you are outside to make a statement like that. When you are inside, you have a responsibility to try and work this thing out. I don't know that [his speech] had an impact. I didn't even know about the speech. A lot of people said a lot of things," Murtha said. Murtha has endorsed Senator Clinton which came as a surprise to many. Looks like hades is a little frosty today. From the Pittsburg Post-Gazette:Murtha finds military progress in trip to IraqWASHINGTON - U.S. Rep. John Murtha today said he saw signs of military progress during a brief trip to Iraq last week, but he warned that Iraqis need to play a larger role in providing their own security and the Bush administration still must develop an exit strategy. "I think the 'surge' is working," the Democrat said in a videoconference from his Johnstown office, describing the president's decision to commit more than 20,000 additional combat troops this year. But the Iraqis "have got to take care of themselves." Violence has dropped significantly in recent months, but Mr. Murtha said he was most encouraged by changes in the once-volatile Anbar province, where locals have started working closely with U.S. forces to isolate insurgents linked to Al Qaeda. He said Iraqis need to duplicate that success at the national level, but the central government in Baghdad

Well, well, well. John Murtha has just returned from Iraq and he had a little something to say. THE SURGE IS WORKING!
That’s right, John Murtha was forced to admit after coming back from Iraq that the surge is working. This is the same man who wanted to slowly but surely deny our troops the means necessary to fight the war with his “slow bleed” plan to end the war by denying our troops funding for equipment a little at a time.
“I think the ’surge’ is working,” the Democrat said in a videoconference from his Johnstown office, describing the president’s decision to commit more than 20,000 additional combat troops this year.
However, Murtha got the new talking points memo that I discussed here, and still will use the new talking points as a reason to withdraw from Iraq.

I am so tired of hearing Republican shrieks that Democrats are somehow tying the Pentagon's hands by not passing a war spending bill. The troops will do without, they cry. Nothing could be further from the truth.House Appropriations Committee Chairman David Obey (D-Wis.) and Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.), chairman of the Defense subcommittee on Appropriations, said President Bush can receive all $200 billion in new funding he wants to pay for the Iraq war next year, as long as he agrees to their demands to set a non-binding "goal" for withdrawing most U.S. combat troops by Dec. 2008.The two senior Democrats also repeatedly slammed Pentagon officials for claiming that the Defense Department may have to shut down some military depots, and lay off civilian employees, if the Iraq funding bill is not enacted soon. Murtha called the charge "despicable," and he angrily yelled at a reporter at one point during today's press conference, asking "Do you believe the Pentagon?"Obey said the "bridge fu
Two Years after Calling for a Redeployment of U.S. Forces from Iraq — President Bush Refuses to Provide the American People with a Responsible Exit Strategy
(Washington D.C.)- Tomorrow marks the two year anniversary of Congressman John P. Murtha’s, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense, public call for the redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq. The following is an issued statement From Congressman John P. Murtha, Chairman of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense:
Two years ago, I was convinced that the President’s lack of strategy in Iraq was harming our military, our international credibility, and the strength of our nation.
“Two years later, the President remains without a plan and I remain convinced that we must begin an orderly redeployment of U.S. forces from Iraq as soon as practicable.

Politrix, the art of hustling and shysternomics personified. Take the Honorable Mr. John Murtha. Other than his recent concerns for bringing troops home from the war effort in Iraq, what stands out in my mind about Jones here is the FBI sting video he made in 1980 in which he told a man supposedly who was a lawyer for a rich Arab looking for a Visa that the way to do business with him was to invest in his district. Although he was hesitant to take the 50 stacks in cash from the agent, he in essence said he did business this way (via pay offs) all the time.Reading a Wall Street Journal last week, I found out a little more about Mr. Murtha. It said that he had funneled hundreds of millions to his district over the years, establishing a defense-based economy for his district. Even in the current 2008 House defense spending bill, hey say more than 40 earmarks worth approximately $166 million is slated to go to corporations that have established businesses in his district. The problem is tha

A career Army member left the service two years short of retirement to move here and try his hand at politics by challenging longtime Democratic U.S. Rep. John Murtha. First-time candidate William T. Russell, 45, a Republican, acknowledged that taking on a popular, 18-term congressman in the 2008 election will be "an uphill battle." "But it's one that must be fought," Russell told the Tribune-Democrat in Johnstown. Russell plans to formally announce his candidacy within weeks. Murtha has declined comment on the challenge. Murtha, 75, has served in the House since 1974
According to this article a judge has ordered John Murtha to testify in a defamation case against him in the Haditha marines suit. In case you have forgotten Murtha said that United States marines killed Iraqi civilians in cold blood before he was briefed on the situation. This means he either had inside information or he lied to push his anti-Bush, anti-war agenda. Either way this doesn’t bode well for him.
The Justice Department wanted the case dismissed because Murtha was acting in his official role as a lawmaker. Assistant U.S. Attorney John F. Henault said the comments were made as part of the debate over the war in Iraq.
So he is arguing that he can say whatever the hell he wants as long as it is official business. He is saying he can make up whatever he wants because he is debating the Iraq war. Aren’t you supposed to use facts in a debate, not here-say? The judge would have none of that.

Finally Murtha might get what he deserves for accusing a Marine of war atrocities. He, along with the Justive department had assumed he was immune from prosecution due to being a Congressman. US District Judge Rosemary M. Collyer feels otherwise. Collyer said she was troubled by the idea the lawmakers are immune from lawsuits regardless of what they say to advance their political careers.John Murtha is now required to give a sworn deposition as to his accusations. I can already hear the loony left squawking about what a chilling effect this will have on the nations lawmakers. Well, maybe thats not such a bad idea. Remember when it was reported in 2005 that a United States marine shot three Iraqi’s execution style? Remember how John Murtha immediately presumed this man was guilty? He presumed the marine was guilty so he could further his anti-war, ant-Bush rhetoric. He tried to use this case as proof that America should not fight terrorism. He WANTED this marine to be guilty so badly, that he presumed him guilty. All to show that American marines, and soldiers are bad, evil people, and so is America.
John Murtha had no inside knowledge of what had happened in Haditha, and he had no regard for our sevicemen serving in Iraq. He would have rather taken the word of our enemy than our soldiers. And he did. This man is a disgrace to himself, and his country.

As I predicted in my original post on this thwarted terror plot on JFK airport, it would only be a matter of time before Bush was blamed for it.
GEORGE STEPHANOPOULOS, HOST: I want to get back to my first question, but let me pick up on something you said just there. You believe that these homegrown terrorist plots are being inspired by the U.S. work in Iraq right now?
JOHN MURTHA, CONGRESSMAN: Absolutely. George, they were inspired by them all over the world. Our presence in Iraq, our occupation in Iraq, gives these people the inspiration. Now, we didn’t have this problem before, they came from Afghanistan. But, now we even have it in the United States. So, I’m absolutely convinced that this is the kind of thing that inspires these people.
And there it is, the reprehensible John Murtha is the first to blame Bush. It’s the Iraq war that is causing all future terror plots according to him. Instead of giving credit for the great work that was done to bring this plot down, grea

From politico.com:
Democratic Rep. John Murtha of Pennsylvania sent a note of apology to Republican Rep. Mike Rogers of Michigan Wednesday, the day after a divided House denied Rogers a vote to officially reprimand the powerful senior Democrat.
Murtha apologized for his “outburst” in a handwritten note Rogers received Wednesday morning, the latter’s office confirmed. This marks his first acknowledgement of an episode between the two lawmakers on the House floor.
Last week, the powerful Democrat allegedly threatened to deny Rogers any future spending projects in defense bills after the Michigan Republican challenged his earmark request for $23 million to prevent the administration from closing an intelligence gathering facility in his western Pennsylvania district.
Republicans have called the tirade a flagrant abuse of House rules.
Members and aides on both sides of the aisle continued to speculate that Rogers or another Republican will eventually call on the ethics
Thank God this man has a ‘D’ after his name, if it were an ‘R’ we would have heard calls for his resignation. There would be no waiting for a hearing to see if there was any wrongdoing. And knowing the way Republicans seem to react to controversy he would have stepped down.
Because he is a Democrat, reaction was different:
House Democrats rejected a Republican bid Tuesday to reprimand Rep. John Murtha, a senior lawmaker accused of threatening legislative reprisals against a GOP member who had crossed him.
This has been swept under the rug with no ripples in the ocean of the main stream media.
Whatever happened to the Democrats promise to run the most ethical congress in history?
John Murtha may have violated house rules. That is the accusation levied by Rep. Mike Rogers (R-Mich.)
Now Nancy Pelosi is defending him.
Pelosi, D-Calif., said she had “no idea what actually happened” during a noisy exchange in the House chamber last week between Reps. John P. Murtha, D-Pa., and Mike Rogers, R-Mich.
No idea what happened, yet she defends him? The evil Republicans must be at fault again.
“I wasn’t there” for the confrontation, Pelosi said. “I do know that the Republicans caused quite a stir that was unjustified on the floor of the House, and I’m sure things were said on both sides.”
She added, “I don’t know that there was going to be a resolution. There was rumor that that might be the form it would take, but we’ll deal with it if that’s what comes forward. But I think Mr. Murtha’s reputation for bipartisanship will hold him in good stead.”

Murtha shouted at and chastised Rogers on the House floor Thursday for offering a motion last week to challenge $23 million Murtha requested in an intelligence bill.Murtha had requested the money to prevent the administration from shuttering the National Drug Intelligence Center in Johnstown, Pa., which is part of Murtha’s district.
“I hope you don’t have any earmarks in the defense appropriations bills because they are gone, and you will not get any earmarks now and forever,” Murtha told Rogers, according to the draft transcript given to The Politico.
“This is not the way we do things here — and is that supposed to make me afraid of you?” Rogers replied.
“That’s the way I do it,” Murtha said.
This doesn’t exactly sound like the bi-partisanship we were promised in November. Not only that but it appears as though Murtha has violated house rules.
If it took place as alleged, Murtha’s tirade could violate House rules, which forbid members to block earmarks ba
The Mullah’s effectively broke the deadlock on negotiations at the conference held earlier this week in Vienna that sought to improve the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty. The Mullah’s “felt that wording would allow it to be targeted for defying U.N. John Murtha says the Democrats should consider impeaching the president for keeping the American people safe. Most rational people including many elected Democrats know that impeachment should not be considered. Murtha is simply trying to score political points for his party with this rhetoric. I find it despicable the way they are playing games with the war and the soldier’s lives.
From the article:
“They say we’re willing to compromise, and then we don’t get any compromise,” said Murtha. “We’ve already compromised. And we need to make this president understand, Mr. President, the public has spoken.”
What have the Democrats compromised? Not cutting off war funding altogether? If they really believed what they are saying they would cut funding and end the war immediately. The only thing the Democrats have compromised is the safety of our troops, the safety of the American people, and their principles and integrity.

I normally like Tim Russert as he, to me anyway, doesn't seem to be the typical journalist with an obvious agenda. In the following video he's blatantly trying to bait John Murtha into lashing out at Vice president Cheney over comments he made recently about the Democrats. Russert asked him this: "How does it feel to be linked with Al-Qaeda by the Vice-President?" I would have to say that Tim Russert is fishing for some headlines from Murtha. In a surprising show of calm Murtha not only didn't take the bait but even down played Cheneys comments saying it was most likely only meant for overseas consumption. I almost hate to say it but kudos to Murtha for taking the high road this time. ~RJH
Being a veteran myself I have always given other vets more than the benefit of the doubt. What is it about being a Democrat that makes a once probably honorable man turn into such a cynic and yes, I will say the words, such a coward. Strong words you say? But look at his own actions. He constantly takes the administration to task over the war in Iraq and makes no bones about his desire for us to get out at any cost. So why doesn't he do what he is in fact empowerd to do and just face off against President Bush directly? He is using the standard Democrat tactics of slowly strangling you from behind rather than direct confrontation. I used to be a smoker but I quit about 10 years ago. When I did smoke I learned that Democrats accomplish their goals not by straight forward action but in roundabout measures. They didn't have the guts to just outlaw smoking so they chipped away at our ability to enjoy smoking. They made it illegal to smoke in restaurants. They added tax upon tax upon tax to every pack. They made it illegal to smoke in the workplace and then when people went outside to smoke they made it illegal to smoke within 50 foot of a buildings doorway. Now people can't smoke in outdoor stadiums or at the beach. Instead of facing people head on like an honorable straight forward person would do they sneak around the backside of issues. This is because they are cowards and don't have the courage and honor to face people directly. Well those tactics worked well for them. As far as smoking goes they would say "we only want this small breakroom area smoke free for the non-smokers" then they expanded it to the ent
That means that the other guy won... but who really cares about that? The real issue was that Nancy Pelosi endorsed John Murth and he lost by a relatively significant margin.
This was the first major test of loyalty for the House to their new speaker... I guess you would say that they failed. The loyalty simply doesn't exist quite yet, or at least it doesn't exist to any sort of degree.
Pelosi will have to make better decisions moving forward.
