      “Multiculturalism” or “Immiscible Cultures”?
WARNING: possible controversy ahead!! Who actually invented the word “multiculturalism” anyway? I think it was our politicians who did that (at least in Australia). Sure, most cultures in a multicultural society tolerate each other, but I think the real trouble arises when immigrant cultures make little or no attempt to integrate into the host culture, leading to the [...]

      Multiculturalism: looking for partnerships.
Out of the various ways that the conflicts of globalization and multiculturalism manifest itself, we find a clear example of the gulf between the rights and responsibilities of one culture to criticize another in the recent Salman Rushdie knighthood episode. Here we have one of the brightest, most exceptional novelists of our time, yet to honour him is apparently to insult Islam. This is an example of where Islam’s right to have a credible face is being abused. Through the systematic shouts and wails of victimization, we do not hear any reason, nor any respect. Why the Queen of England and the head of the Church of England must defer to the ghosts of Ayatollahs past, or harpings of distant politicians in Iran or Pakistan in need of a local image boost, or the lunatic fringe is not explained. As Tom Freeman points out, the moderate voice of Islam in the UK, that of the Muslim Council of Britain for example, does not try to condemn this radical and self serving fringe, or promote

End multiculturalism in favor of Britishness
If creating a new national holiday will preserve the unity of the United Kingdom then the proposal to create a “Britain Day” should be supported. The monarchy is suppose to bring Britons together behind a unifying and non-political figure, however, since coming to power in 1997, Labour has made it a mission to end tradition and unionism by promoting devolution – which could only logically end at independence – for the nations of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. (more…)

Human rights sacrificed on the altar of multiculturalism
Oppressed Muslim women are denied justice The New Zealand Herald15 May 2007DO YOU believe in the rights of women or in multiculturalism? A series of verdicts in the German courts in the past few weeks has shown with hard logic that you cannot back both. The crucial case centres on Nishal, a 26-year-old Moroccan immigrant with two children and a psychotic husband. Ever since their wedding night

The perils of multiculturalism at 31,000 feet
As Air India shows, we’re more afraid of ‘racism’ than terrorism MARTIN COLLACOTTNational Post08 May 2007Recent revelations by James Bartleman and others concerning the failure of Canadian security officials to act on warnings about the 1985 Air India bombings are troubling, to say the least. What kind of country ignores such clear signs of incipient mass murder? Former B.C. premier and federal

The perils of enforcing rules on multiculturalism
In Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, citizens are defined on their identity cards and passports by race and religion. It's a function of how these societies are organized along racial and religious lines. If Canadian multiculturalism has freed people to revel in, or rebel against, their religious, racial, ethnic, cultural or linguistic identities, the "managed multiculturalism" model of this region has trapped them in officially designated categories.Singapore, which broke off from Muslim Malaysia in 1965, has maintained its ethnic mix of 75 per cent Chinese, 15 per cent Muslim Malay and 7 per cent Indians from India. It has done so with controlled migration from China to compensate for the perceived higher birth rate among the Malay Muslims. The government also maintains informal quotas for the three communities in housing, schooling and electoral representation.Since accommodation is expensive on the 699-square-kilometre island, nearly 80 per cent of its 4.5 million people live in s

      The Multiculturalism Act's backlash
It appears that for the eulogists of the Multiculturalism Act, which came into effect in 1971, criticizing the Canadian doctrine of multiculturalism rationally with nuances is something racist. Really? Did you know that racism is actually a theory of hatred that advocates the superiority of an ethnic group or a nation? To be very honest with you, the Multiculturalism Act has a backlash on the Canadian society, because it depends on stereotypes and “[it ensures] that ethnic groups will preserve their distinctiveness in a gentle and insidious form of cultural apartheid”, according to Canadian writer Neil Bissoondath. This man also adds that multiculturalism leads “an already divided society down the path to further social divisiveness.”My doubts about the Multiculturalism Act started to grow when I started to keep both of my eyes on what’s going on in Canadian politics in high school. Unfortunately, the size of my doubts about multiculturalism doubled because of the behaviour o

      A pathetic poll on multiculturalism
Ok, I'm not supposed to write anything in my blog since I'm on a break, but let me share a very interesting thing with you. It's not the first time that I see an English Canadian newspaper make a poll about Canadians' opinion about multiculturalism. We can see that the majority of Canadians want the "immigrants and ethnic minorities to blend into the Canadian society". However, the problem is that there's lack of nuances in this survey. If you responded by stating that "immigrants and ethnic minorities [should] blend into the Canadian society", the pollsters will think that you're upholding that immigrants and ethnic minorities don't have the right to keep their ancestral culture. It looks like pollsters nowadays don't even know how to make a poll. Americans want immigrants and ethnic minorities to blend into American society. Does it make Americans racist and oppressive? Definitely not.Anyway, Friday, I'll write a blog entry about why I'm against the Multiculturalism Act and

      Multiculturalism and the new racists
As defined by Wikipedia, 'Multiculturalism is an ideology advocating that society should consist of, or at least allow and include, distinct cultural groups, with equal status. Multiculturalism contrasts with the monoculturalism which was historically the norm in the European nation-state.'That was and is Europe. In the United States, historically things have been different. 'The central metaphor is the idea of the Melting Pot - where all the immigrant cultures are mixed and amalgamated without state intervention. The Melting Pot implied that each individual immigrant, and each group of immigrants, assimilated into American society at their own pace, improving their income and social status on the way.'Europe is paying the price for non-assimilation of immigrants, specifically Muslims. Unfortunately America may be headed in the same direction. Multiculturalism is a growing force in America's universities and public life, according to Ayn Rand.In common language, that means that al

      Melanie Phillips On Multiculturalism
The Canadian newspaper The National Post recently published an article by Melanie Phillips, The country that hates itself, in which the author warns against the disastrous effects of multiculturalism, with specific references to Britain's experience. A few quotes:[...] In particular, both Canada and Britain need to face the fact that multiculturalism, which for both countries is an article of faith, has brought havoc in its wake. This doctrine holds that all minority cultures must enjoy equal status with the majority, and that any attempt to impose the majority culture over those of minorities is by definition racist. It has helped create a cultural vacuum into which has roared militant Islamism -- the interpretation of Islam that preaches holy war. Multiculturalism not only creates the environment in which this clerical fascism can flourish but -- crucially -- also undermines our ability to defend ourselves against it.[...] In the wake of the London bombings, people came up with a li

      Jade, Racism, Multiculturalism and Discrimination
There have been some rather strange comments about Jade Goody and Big Brother recently. Surely no one expects sense to come from the mouth of Jade - do they? Now what '-ism' is that reflecting? Just because we don't have a word for it doesn't mean its not a thought powered more by prejudice than awareness of the person. How can there be multi-culturalism without discrimination? How can I acknowledge the different traditions and values of another social grouping without making a discrimination? If I don't discriminate (ie recognize a difference) then I must surely expect others to have exactly my values. It's a funny thing with cultural values. Do I assume that an adult has chosen to accept them, in which case they are responsible for the values they follow, or I do I assume that they are mindlessly accepting whatever came before, in which case I have no reason to respect those values (because they are simply habits both good and bad). Just because a culture does something
