The Smith Farm, Where Mormonism Started
After leaving Hill Cumorah, I took a tour of the Smith family farm, where Mormons believe that God and angels first appeared to Joseph Smith, and the roots of the Church of Latter Day Saints took hold. As they tell it, the place has a rather intriguing history. First, after moving to New York from Vermont, the Smith family built a log cabin as a temporary residence on the farm they were intendi

      Mormonism 101
Tom Quinn continues his series on the LDS Church by discussing some of his faith's most basic-and often controversial-points of doctrine. Ever since Mitt Romney, a practising Mormon, began showing up at Republican presidential debates with his immaculately quaffed hair and robotic pseudo-personality, the general public has been paying a lot more attention to the LDS Church, a faith that until rece

However, every section in this article needs to be condensed into high-level summaries. The bulk of the criticisms in this article need to be moved to their respective, related articles. Is Mormonism A Cult and Are They Christians?
When I was seven years old my father died. His father became my father and through him my examples for life and faith were set.My Grandfather was a very wise and loving man. In his last days his knees hurt so badly he could hardly climb stairs. Nonetheless, he got down on them each night to pray to his God. He was a servant to Jesus Christ to the day he died. It was through him that I found that unconditional love was possible and I too accepted Jesus as my savior. This wonderful man was also Native American.According to my research the Mormon church believes that Native Americans and African Americans are cursed and hence they have dark skin.I would like to say that my Jesus, my God judges people as Dr. Martin Luther King said "not by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"-in other words, through a man's heart. This teaching along with other teachings of The LDS Church makes it far different from any bible-based Christian church I have ever encountered. Huckabee won’t give thoughts on Mormonism
DES MOINES, Iowa (CNN) – Mike Huckabee has evangelicals to thank for helping him surge in the Iowa polls. In Iowa, Mitt Romney is his chief rival for those votes. Still, the former Baptist preacher is trying to steer clear any comments about Romney’s religious beliefs that might help him gain support among those voters, some [...]

      Mitt Romney Grilled on Mormonism
I don't really want Mitt Romney to be president. But to be grilled on what his religion believes is an irrelevant issue. Romney's losing votes and being put on the defensive simply because he doesn't pass some ridiculous Christian litmus test that says the President of the United States has to believe in certain things that some of us consider rather elaborate superstitions.Honestly, how much longer are we going to let organized religion limit our ways of thinking and hold us back in progressing forward as a nation? Religion is based on arrogance, which says, "We know what really happened thousands of years ago and what will happen after we die more than you do. But if you need me to reason and think about anything happening here and now, then...ummmm...I'll pray."Can't we all just get along and say Christianity and Mormonism and all other religions are equally ridiculous and get on with more important things? Here is something that perfectly expresses what I feel:We must start a R

Is Romney Campaigning For The Presidency Or Mormonism?
Romney's Campaign To Mainstream MormonismRepublican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said yesterday that he hopes to convince voters that his Mormon faith is mainstream."I think as people come to know my faith they'll recognize that the values of my faith are — they very much flow from the Judeo-Christian tradition of this country. I believe in God, I believe in Jesus Christ, I believe in the equality of all humankind," Mr. Romney said in an interview with The Washington Times.Mr. Romney has remained mostly mum on the topic; despite his desire to deliver a speech about his Mormon faith, he has accepted the advice of political aides who advise against the move...The candidate's religion, however, threatens to become a very public campaign issue — and a dangerous one. In a recent Gallup survey, just two-thirds of conservatives said they could support a Mormon candidate.Read Article... Romney Republican Politics

Robert Silverberg, "Fantastic Archaeology," and Mormonism
In case I haven't mentioned it, I live in Utah now, which is of course the heart of Mormon country. I know less than nothing about Mormonism. By that, I mean that what I do know, I learned from Bud MacFarlane, Jr., who is to Mormonism what Dan Brown is to Catholicism. If you figure you better learn a little something about Mormonism, you could do worse than begin with chapter 8, "Archaeology and Religion," in Stephen Williams's Fantastic Archaeology: The Wild Side of North American Prehistory. Williams offers a restrained, if brief, presentation of Mormonism's roots in the archaeological speculations of Joseph Smith's time. Because I try (though often fail) to always make connections between religion and sf on this blog, I must mention that one of Williams's most important sources for this chapter is the nonfiction work, Moundbuilders of Ancient America, by Robert Silverberg, who is better known for his science fiction. To make a brief summary of Williams's explanations, Joseph Smi
