‘Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer’ might just be one of the great albums of our time. With danceable, catchy, funky tunes, but telling dark and personal tales of inner turmoil, it's a split personality of a record straight from Kevin Barnes' brain. At the Botanique in Brussels on Friday night, however, all Of Montreal wanted to do was have a good time. With only forty minutes allotted time

In 2006, when Manouk Alexanian decided to buy a condo, he quickly found himself priced out of Montreal."I looked around the downtown area for condos and the prices were high, sizes were small and the taxes were high as well," said the 29-year-old consultant. "But since my job is in downtown, I needed a fast way to get there."Rather than sacrifice space or convenience, Alexanian began to look north, in Laval, where prices were lower and a newly-extended métro line was set to open. After less than two weeks, he found a 900-square-foot apartment for $120,000, about two blocks from the de la Concorde métro, one of the three new métro stations that opened last year.

Montreal, or Montréal in French, (pronounced /ˌmɒ̃ʀeˈal/ in Quebec French, pronounced /ˌmʌntriːˈɑːl/ in Canadian English, and /ˌmɔ̃ʀeˈal/ in European French) was the largest city in Canada up until the 70's and is now the second-largest city in Canada and the largest city in the province of Quebec. Originally called Ville-Marie ('City of Mary'), some historians think the city takes its present name from the Mont Réal (as it was pronounced in Middle French, or Mont Royal / Mount Royal in present French), the three-head hill at the heart of the city, whose name was also initially given to the island on which the city is located. The official language of Montreal is French as defined by the city's charter. Montreal continues to be beaten - badly - by the off-island suburbs. Young families and many of the most promising would-be taxpayers are hauling their stuff off island. The reason is simple. You can save a lot of money by living out there where the air is fresh and parking is never an issue. The average cost for a condo in Montreal last year was $241,000 while it was $175,000 in Laval. The average on-island home was $357,000, compared to $236,000 in Laval. The numbers were similar in the other off-island suburbs.

Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman. Dustin Hoffman. Why did Kevin Barnes name every song on "The Early Four Track Recordings" after Dustin Hoffman? Be that as it may, this collection of Of Montreal's early work seems a bit cobbled together and dusty, but the band's charm shines through in some of the songs. As I said before, each song is named after Dustin Hoffman supposedly doing something, usually connected with bathing. (The weirdest title is "Dustin Hoffman's Wife Makes A Sarcastic Remark, Cuts The Head Off A Duck, Places It Where The Tub Was And Begins To Growl").What follows is mostly a collection of guitar pop and ballads, with piano and some muffled percussion in the background -- there's a country flavor to "Dustin Hoffman Quits Bathroom And Climbs A Tree," and an experimental flavor to "Dustin Hoffman's Wife Makes...", where a kazoo plays half the song to a carnival tune. The title "Early Four Track Recordings" seems almost like an apology for the lesser quality of these songs
This album is a collection of demos recorded by the band that pre-date the original release of Cherry Peel. You'll recognize most of the tracks from other releases, but there are a few you haven't heard. Those, like me, who miss the old sound of Of Montreal will appreciate this collection of tunes. Those who prefer the new sound, or don't even know Of Montreal existed before the Outback Steakhouse commercial, are sadly missing out.
Of Montreal return to their very beginnings on their oddly named fifth album, Aldhils Arboretum, abandoning all pretensions of constructing another Byzantine concept album as they did on their past three outings. As a result the quintet have made a stronger, more appealing record by simplifying their aesthetic--sounding much like they did on their 1997 debut, Cherry Peel--and creating 14 discrete, unrelated tableaus about some of the idiosyncratic characters from their native Athens, Georgia. Borrowing freely from the band's own autobiography, spiritual leader and main songwriter Kevin Barnes constructs a skewed pastoral scene in "Isn't It Nice" (about an actual exodus the band made to Clarke Country, Georgia, where four of the five members set up housekeeping in a community peopled with crotchety old women, inebriated neighbors, and suicidal deer), proving he can conjure rural characters just as compelling as the urban warriors Lou Reed described in "Walk on the Wild Side." Barnes
If He Is Protecting Our Nation, Then Who Will Protect Big Oil, Our Children? is an EP by indie rock band of Montreal. Originally self-released by the band as a tour-only CD, it was later released commercially.
Deflated Chime, Foals Slightly Flower Sibylline Responses is a very limited promotional CD for of Montreal's winter '06 tour. With two unreleased songs, original David Barnes artwork, and a nifty digi-pak, Deflated is only available through Polyvinyl mail-order and of Montreal on their upcoming tour.
Pop fans rejoice: Here's yet another delightful concept album from a member of the Elephant Six family, Of Montreal, who actually hail from Athens, Georgia. Of Montreal are more like third cousins to the E6 clan; their sound is cohesively pop oriented and distinctively quaint. The songs are bouncy, keyboard- and vocal-driven gems that collapse barbershop harmonies and well-enunciated, Tin Pan Alley vocalizations with Anglo mid-'60s pop (especially that of the ever-popular Kinks). The lyrics on Of Montreal's third full-length weave an intricate story in childrens-book logic, with invisible trees, a miniature philosopher, and a cast of hundreds. The words from the buoyant "Fun Loving Nun" (whose chorus appears to have been sung by the mice from Babe) can be seen as The Gay Parade's moral: "Some of us get covered up by the world, become bitter from our loneliness and forget our dreams."
Athens' Of Montreal has seen a resurgent interest in their back catalog following the overwhelming success of their most recent two albums: "Satanic Panic In The Attic" and "The Sunlandic Twins". This record isn't an EP but an 8-song mini album released shortly after the group's debut. The highlight is a cover of The Who's "Disguises", and the album serves as a foundation for which other Of Montreal full-lengths would manifest themselves. Priced as an affordable CD EP.
Athens' Of Montreal has seen a resurgent interest in their back catalog following the overwhelming success of their most recent two albums: "Satanic Panic In The Attic" and "The Sunlandic Twins". This, their second full-length, features uncredited appearances by members of Neutral Milk Hotel and The Late B.P. Helium. It was the first in which Of Montreal built characters around concepts. Though not as developed as later concept albums by the group, it's infused with Vaudevillian elements that foreshadowed Of Montreal's break-out releases, "The Gay Parade" and "Coquelicot Asleep In The Poppies: A Variety Of Whimsical Verse". This record "marked a crucial stage in the evolution from the lo-fi garage pop of 'Cherry Peel' to the ambitious rock carnival of 'The Gay Parade' and cemented Of Montreal's status as one of the most creatively relevant groups of the late '90s"
The sixth full-length and first for Polyvinyl from this Athens, GA band is a departure from previous releases. There's a 70's Afro beat and an 80's new wave influence, and the songs are full of danceable electro hooks. Limited edition LP version on colored vinyl includes a bonus 7-inch with two exclusive tracks.
Hailing from Athens, Of Montreal have carved their own niche in the indie-pop world, establishing themselves as a uniquely twisted band that thrills fans with compelling live performances, delights critics with their constant innovations and refinements, and continually showcases their musical evolution that culls together influences as varied as Brian Eno, Television, Prince, and The Shins. "The Sunlandic Twins" is their most cohesive and adventurous record to date. It plays out like an electro pop opera. Beginning buoyant and opalescent, traversing a labyrinthine Neptune, and climaxing in blackout darkness one only discovers in warm solitude.
Icons, Abstract Thee is an EP from indie pop band Of Montreal. It was released January 23, 2007. The EP is a collection of songs from recent singles, bonus tracks from the vinyl edition of Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?, and a song that was put up on the band's MySpace page. It can be seen as a bridge between the song "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal" and "Bunny Ain't No Kind of Rider" from Hissing Fauna, Are You the Destroyer?. The first track, "Du Og Meg", discusses the manner in which lead singer Kevin Barnes and wife Nina met and courted each other. "Voltaic Crusher/Undrum to Muted Da" is about the quickly fading love between the two, a theme present in Hissing Fauna... and the only theme in "The Past Is a Grotesque Animal". The second part of the song, "Undrum to Muted Da", is a short instrumental piece tacked on the beginning of the next song, "Derailments in a Place of Our Own". "Derailments" is a solo acoustic performance that details Kevin's deepest depression in the
A Pollinaire Rave is a comedy tour by Of Montreal lead singer Kevin Barnes, his brother David Barnes and his wife, Nina. A CD with the same name was sold, and five of the seven songs on the EP became songs on the Of Montreal album Satanic Panic in the Attic.
As the name would hint, "Satanic Twins" is made up of 12 remixes of songs from their two latest albums "Satanic Panic in the Attic" and "The Sunlandic Twins." Any resemblance to the songs' electro-pop roots, though, is sadly missing. In fact, with the exception of "Forecast Fascist Future," these songs are barely listenable. What has been done on this record is not only a travesty to Of Montreal, but also to the devoted fans who will purchase it. Fortunately, however, "Satanic Twins" has only been released in limited edition vinyl, so the chances of this being anyone's first encounter with the band are slim.It has always been my opinion that remix albums should not exist unless they offer a new perspective on a song without completely crippling the original's spirit. "Romance, Bloody Romance" by Death From Above 1979, for example, offered a unique twist on the band's signature sound, and it worked. Unfortunately, "Satanic Twins" butchers these songs to the extent that they don't e

But he was keen to try and reassure us it's in good hands. At first they were very twee. Then they were disco-punk, sort of. And now they are one. Kevin Barnes, this enigmatic band's prolific singer-songwriter, wrote and recorded much of this album alone, though he did enlist the help of a few friends (Alabee Blonde, the Late B.P. Helium and Heather McIntosh). Programmed handclaps, looped semi-funky bass and synth washes are the main ingredient on the Athens-based dude's Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?. Thankfully, he's still intent on mixing and matching disparate genres at whim, throwing Beach Boys' harmonies atop songs that sound more than a little like a Bowie-Eno collaboration. Lyrically, these might be the most personal songs Barnes has written. Sonically it's solid, but not as fully realized as the band's prior albums. As with any "growing pains" record, Destroyer might not make many new fans, but old ones will be pleased. The real breakthrough number, the song that hopefully hints at the band's next direction, is the twelv
So here I am, stuck for another three weeks (no! I'm not counting!)... I've been staying with a friend at her mother's house in Otterburn Park (see previous posts on that), the thing is, this is a HOUSE, which means lots of cleaning and tons of yard work.I've been enjoying it mostly, but that 's probably because I don't feel entirely obliged to do it. I'm sure I'd be way less gung-ho if it was my OWN yard. Anyway, last weekend the three of us headed outside (thankfully the weather was nice) to rake the leaves.a BIG pile of leaveswith the bag to give it a little perspective...I'd already done 17 bags at hallowe'en and this past weekend the three of us managed to bag another 35!!! And we still have half the yard to do! We're hoping for good weather this weekend to get it all done. Anyway, I took a few pictures. Now I'm wishing I'd thought of shooting the 35 bags lined up on the road for collection, but oh well... Maybe we'll have just as many this weekend and I can show you

A great article from this Saturday’s Montreal Gazette talks about Real Estate on the internet.
The article points out that “The problem with too many real estate search sites, including the Canadian Real Estate Association’s MLS website, is they offer too little information to satisfy a sophisticated user.”
The article also mentions ByTheOwner.com’s French site…”the site www.duproprio.com, where vendors can sell their properties commission-free. The best thing about the site is all its sold properties are listed with price and the number of listing days included.”
Another great point which signals a bright future for ByTheOwner.com is that “Generation Y, the so-called babies of the baby boomers, are technologically advanced, able negotiators and independent thinkers” and that this group of people “prefer to do plenty of research and make their own decisions.”
