Monsanto's Chief Financial Officer Terry Crews has said that Monsanto's Roundup and other glyphosate-based herbicides are on track to bring in above $1.9 billion of gross profit for the 2008 fiscal year, ahead of the previous forecast. At the same time, the company's seed corn business should exceed $2 billion in gross-profit generation for the first time, meaning that their herbicides are earning

Monsanto has announced that it would try to sell its business of producing Posilac, an artificial growth hormone for dairy cows. The decision comes as more retailers, responding to consumer demand, sell dairy products from cows not treated with the artificial hormone. Wal-Mart, Kroger and Publix are among the retailers that now sell house-brand milk from untreated cows.

The Organization for Competitive Markets (OCM) says Monsanto's market power is driving up seed prices and devastating farmers and their communities.
Monsanto executives said that they expect to raise the price of some seed corn varieties to $300, up about $95 to $100 per bag, or 35 percent.
"A $100 price increase is a tremendous drain on rural America," said Fred Stokes, OCM's executive director.

Reading through all the news about the global food crisis, I lacked one thing: the solution to this problem or even the slightest hint to one.In many discussion fora and through comments on social bookmarking sites, it was often suggested that genetically modified (GM) crops, said to yield a higher production, and to be more pest-resistant, could mean the solution to world hunger.I started to search around for more info on genetically modified organism (GMO) or genetically engineered organism (GEO), and came across several posts referring to a video called "The World According to Monsanto" by a French independent filmmaker, Marie-Monique Robin. The movie researches the credibility of (or rather lack thereof) US based Monsanto, one of the biggest chemical companies in the world and the provi

Monsanto has agreed to pay all the clean-up costs of the Roundup Ready canola that contaminated Schmeiser's fields. Also part of the agreement was that there was no gag-order on the settlement and that Monsanto could be sued again if further contamination occurred. Schmeiser believes this precedent setting agreement ensures that farmers will be entitled to reimbursement when their

Gary Rinehart clearly remembers the summer day in 2002 when the stranger walked in and issued his threat. Rinehart was behind the counter of the Square Deal, his “old-time country store,” as he calls it, on the fading town square of Eagleville, Missouri, a tiny farm community 100 miles north of Kansas City. The Square Deal is a fixture in Eagleville, a place where farmers and townspeople can go for lightbulbs, greeting cards, hunting gear, ice cream, aspirin, and dozens of other small items without having to drive to a big-box store in Bethany, the county seat, 15 miles down Interstate 35.Everyone knows Rinehart, who was born and raised in the area and runs one of Eagleville’s few surviving businesses. The stranger came up to the counter and asked for him by name.“Well, that’s me,

A new documentary was aired on French television entitled “The World According to Monsanto” (Le Monde selon Monsanto). Canada's highest court has rejected a legal action launched by two organic farmers against the Monsanto company. Six years ago, they tried to file a class-action lawsuit against Monsanto Canada, but Canadian courts have consistently refused to certify it as a class action.
The claim is that organic farmers have lost money because of the introduction of genetically modified canola; if organic crops are contaminated in any way by genetically modified products, they lose their European markets.
The Supreme Court dismissal of the appeal does not mean the case is dead. It would still be possible to pursue the lawsuit as an individual case.
