I must have received over a douzen mails on this one which is definitely a good thing and not to mentioned few shouts as well. Always good to have plenty of mirrors. Thats great guys. I hope everyone made it out to see Fleet Foxes last night. Sonic Itch has a great little "getting to know" piece up on the band today. Go check it out if you get a chance. But now, more new music... I'll go on record saying that I'm not the biggest fans of the Glasgow group Mogwai. I've only slightly enjoyed their instrumental records up to this point, and when I heard they had a new album coming

Yes that's right, an expanded version of the debut Mogwai album is in the offing. It doesn't mean the tracks are even longer than before but it does mean that you get a second disc of stuff which was found just lying around on the Chemikal Underground office floor. Mogwai is a Scottish post-rock band formed in 1995 that have become one of the most influential and best known bands of their genre. They compose lengthy, mostly instrumental guitar-based pieces in the style of post-rock, usually focused around the elaboration of a single theme, and are known traditionally for their quiet/loud dynamic, defined bass riffs, and an eminent ambient sound, sometimes da

New Blog Entry From Mogwai: End Of Touring
Hello everyone.Well, thanks to everyone that came to Connect to see us, it was a very enjoyable show. Made only slightly more enjoyable by the fact that afterwards, Dominic informed me that there was an eager Primal Scream fan (they were on after us) right at the front for most of the gig telling us we were shite and getting really pissed off with our tunes. The guy was obviously a genius because everyone knows he could have just walked back up the hill to the bar, had a few pints and been back where he was standing with complete ease instead of making a clown of himself in front of loads of people for an hour and fifteen minutes. I had no idea this was going on because I had earplugs in (why didn't he?). Probably a Rangers fan too! So, aye, that's us finished the touring for 2007 and again, thanks if you came to see us this year. It's time for us to get stuck in to the recording of the album now so we'll see you at the other end with some new "jams" and apocryphal tales.Cheers ver

      Mogwai - Travel Is Dangerous
Another fine and worthy addition to the Mogwai canon. All five tracks will be familiar, and the lead track is one of the best songs from the brilliant Mr Beast album. The next two tracks are remixes. Errors do a fine job with "Auto Rock", managing to make it sound eerie and sweet at the same time. Likewise Acid Casuals, who lift a couple of the refrains of "Friend Of the Night" into the sky and allow them to hang there. The EP is rounded-off by splendid renderings of old favourite "Like Herod", and Mr Beast closer "We're No Here", recorded in Japan earlier this year.Yes, you should buy.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Mogwai - Ten Rapid (Collected Recordings 1996-1997)
Even before an official debut, these young lads from scotland were already proving their relationship with music far exceeded their peers..Yes this is probally the least amazing of Mogwai's catalouge, but within the subtlties you see the ingrediants that would help make Mogwai one of the standout bands of the new millenium..This album has more breezy, relaxed tracks then what we are used to dealing with when plunging into the abyss with these guys, however the essence of the band and it's die hard philosphy of letting a composition breath as long as it needs to is in full effect. Amazing that a band so young could be so sincere in it's goal of pure audio immersion.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Mogwai - Government Commissions: BBC Sessions 1996-2003 [LIVE]
Part 2Mogwai has always been one of those near-great bands that you never give up on because they're a thrilling live act with a terrifically bold, louder than God sound and their use of loud-soft-loud dynamics is rivaled only by Godpseed, the Dirty Three and Slint. But on their albums, Mogwai so often seems lost in search of an actual song that, well, it's easy to get bored. This album collects tunes the band recorded for the BBC, and it walks the balance between experimentation and melody far finer than any of their proper albums. Perhaps the need to record songs quickly in the studio for airplay compelled them towards accessibility rather than ear-bleeding wankiness? Regardless, this is not only a must for Mogwai fans, it's the beginners' best place to start. The collection is dedicated to the late, brilliant DJ John Peel, for whom many of the songs were recorded.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Mogwai - Friend of the Night
More than just melodic joy-rock band, the Friend of the Night disc exhibits a smooth, free-slowing music style, all done while keeping the traditional PMR composure. The use of definable piano's are a welcome to the ear helping to bring the pieces of music to life. Each of the three three tracks off this album are a bit subtle in the beginning, but by slowing adding in more instruments, awkward chords, and crescendo, they all build into their musical climax, bringing the listener right in with it, until the end of the song where it lets you off the journey lightly, leaving you ready for the next trip.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Mogwai - My Father My King
"My Father My King" starts off quietly and unassumingly enough, but builds into a frenzy of guitar-based melodic chaos within the first five minutes. The next couple of minutes bring it all back down to let you catch your breath before Glasgow's kings of sonic martial arts give you another swift kick to the ears.Despite there only being one track, this is perhaps my favorite Mogwai release to date. Harmoniously anarchic, frighteningly beautiful, this is one record you don't want to miss.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Mogwai - 4 Satan Ep
This EP's first two tracks are absolutely worth your money. They communicate with you as if they are alive, and have known you your whole life. "Superheroes of BMX" and "Now You're Taken" seem to work together to create a blanket of musical comfort. "Now You're Taken" is one of the most personal, affecting songs I've ever heard. The first time you listen to it, make sure it's raining at 2:00 AM -- the experience of Aidan Moffat's voice flowing through you accompanied by the smell of rain is truly amazing. I would pay 10 dollars for this track alone."Sterodee" stinks. Let's face it. It's an interesting concept, but just doesn't work. Get this EP, listen to it once through, then stop it after the incredible second track for repeated listenings. But get this EP. In fact, get every Mogwai album ever made, except for Come On Die Young and Kicking A Dead Pig. They don't live up to the perfection of Young Team, Ten Rapid, or EP+2.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explo

Mogwai - Travels In Constants, Volume 12
This is Mogwai's instalment to the Travels In Constants singles club on Temporary Residence released last year. However they managed to get their hands on a limited number of copies for people who were not lucky enough to get it first time round. Track 1, simply called Untitled starts with drifting guitars building up to a driving atmosphere laden with haunting vocals before gently placing you on the ground with the words of a monologue bringing you to your senses. The next track Quiet Stereo Dee builds you up gradually leaving you expectant for a dramatic end but instead drifts off into space. This brings us to the final track Arundel is a Papa M cover and is a gentle piano instrumental, a relaxing end to a great single. This is one of Mogwai's best singles since No Education = No Future and it's a shame that it is limited. There are however samples of the song on Mogwai's web site so you can hear what you are missing.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In T

Mogwai - Kicking a Dead Pig
Part 2Remix albums always sound like a grand concept, having a bunch of disparate artists remix an artist's work and then smacking together the results on one disc. Sometimes the contrasts work well, and sometimes they can pull it off. Mogwai's remix album leaves me thinking "sort of." There are some nice interpretations here, such as the ones from Third Eye Foundation, Alec Empire and especially My Bloody Valentine, but a lot of the album is uninteresting and could be considered filler. None of them really capture the miserable quality of Mogwai's original music, which is why the Mogwai remix of "Fear Satan" is a standout.Site : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Mogwai - Rock Action
The Glaswegian lads in Mogwai continue to tinker with their instrumental rock formula. Whereas Young Team featured the loud-soft dynamic gleaned from Velvet Underground and Come On Die Young copped Sonic Youths moody experimentalism, Rock Action adds a dash of Yo La Tengos hushed ambience and Flaming Lips studio-savvy playfulness (no surprise there--Rock Action was produced by Lips collaborator and Mercury Rev-ster David Fridmann.) Despite quoting from such a heavy lineup of musical mischief makers, Mogwai craft their own sound, largely due to the melodic narratives they conjure up in the interplay between the three guitarists. With hardly a spoken whisper in the mix, they manage to create great moments of drama, tension, and resolution. "Take Me Somewhere Nice" is a meandering journey toward the promised land, "You Don't Know Jesus" wanders with mystical and loopy abandon, and "Secret Pint" thrums in stately glory. One of the great things about Mogwai is that they are still so damn

Mogwai - Come On Die Young
Part 2Moody, bombastic, brooding, loping, thunderous, austere, chaotic: heap on the adjectives as the young boys in Mogwai worm their way through a mostly instrumental set of guitar-heavy songscapes tinted with obscure samples and an occasional mumbled voice. Mogwai can transcend the distance between a loopy and delicate melody and a deafening and crashing crescendo in the space of a breath. Come On Die Young is a stunning, utterly original achievementSite : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. Zion, Album Leaf

      Mogwai - MR. Beast
With tune titles like "Glasgow Mega-Snake," "Acid Food," and "I Chose Horses," it should be clear Mogwai hasn’t taken any easy, mellowing departures on Mr. Beast. Sure, the album opens with the calming guitar atmospherics of "Auto Rock," but then "Glasgow Mega-Snake" comes bounding out with a crushing jog of a beat and a trademark granite slab of guitars. The Scots also indulge incrementally more beautiful and terrifying dreamscapes, especially the down-turned piano topping that hovers above a guitar storm on "Emergency Trap" and the layers of clear-toned melody that chime over a swirl of choked, feedback-drenched power on "Folk Death 95." There has long been talk of Scottish miserablism, and this colors and grinds the idea blissfullySite : Mogwai Similar Artists: Explosions In The Sky, M83, Godspeed You! Black Emperor, A Silver Mt. By stripping away much of the noodling and noise of their earlier work in favor of tighter structures, more immediate melodies, and vocals, they've recaptured the excitement that surrounded their first releases. Like so many groups stuck with the post-rock tag, Mogwai needed a way to expand beyond the term without changing their sound completely, and aided by guests like producer Dave Fridmann and Super Furry Animals' Gruff Rhys, they've found it. Rock Action incorporates bristling distortion, propulsive drums, and electronic textures similar to Tortoise's Standards -- particularly on the opening track

Mr. Beast is also a surprisingly spontaneous-sounding album -- in the best possible sense, its freshness makes it feel like a recorded practice session and also helps give relatively delicate pieces like "Team Handed" the same amount of impact that heavy, searing tracks like the closer, "We're No Here," have. Interestingly, more of Mr. Beast tends toward the former kind of song than the latter; "Friend of the Night," "Emergency Trap," and the glorious, slow-
