This equated to a loss of less than 5% of total body weight. Guidelines from the National Institute for Clinical Excellence recommend stopping the use of anti-obesity drugs if 5% of total body weight is not lost after three months. While making changes to lifestyle and diet are recommended as the initial treatment for obesity, the use of anti-obesity drugs is common. The ACLU today announced a lawsuit against UC Santa Barbara on behalf of Randall Carlyle of Montecito, CA. The lawsuit claims that Carlyle's English professor, Dr. Milano, caused Mr. Carlyle emotional distress by requiring students to write their own "Modest Proposal" in the satirical style of Jonathan Swift, the author of the original Modest Proposal. Mr. Carlyle suffers from hypo-ironia or an inability to process sophisticated humor. Dr. Milano assigned this paper even after Mr. Carlyle informed him that he was irony-challenged and couldn't, therefore, complete it, said ACLU attorney Maria Santana. The failure to accommodate Mr. Lopez' disability has resulted in multiple hardships for Mr. Carlyle including missing an entire semester of school and being dis-invited to judge the Sophomore Follies talent show. A new drug billed as a magic bullet for obesity - rimonabant (Acomplia) - does help people lose weight, although not that much weight, and also helps lower cardiac risk factors, according to a review of studies. Rimonabant went on sale in Europe in July, and U.S. approval is pending before the Food and Drug Administration. The drug works in a new way, suppressing the appetite by targeting the brain cells involved in the “munchies” familiar to marijuana users. “The use of rimonabant after one year produces modest weight loss of approximately 5 percent” of body weight, found reviewers led by Cintia Curioni, at the State University of Rio de Janeiro, in Brazil. “Compared with placebo, a 20-milligram pill produced a 4.9 kilogram greater reduction in body weight in trials with one-year results.” This translates to weight loss of a little under 11 pounds.
