If you're like most people, you probably imagine eating carrot sticks, going to bed hungry, and giving up your favorite foods—and that's why so many diets fail. But the 50+ last night and handful today have just put me over the edge.  I am VERY sorry to do it. Not a lot of you comment, which is fine, but it really is a hassle for everyone.  [More]

      Design Basics Moderation & Balance
It seems as though the eternal battle in the family dwelling is not between siblings or spouses, but rather between Design & Functionality. We all desire a space to be visually appealing, but at what cost? Can a Minimalist dwelling be adequate for 4 children who own every Spongebob Squarepants toy on the market? Can a French Country kitchen provide the storage space needed for a master chef moving about like a whirlwind? Where does style confront substance and is there a point where the two of them unite to face the challenges of the home? The solution Moderation & Balance - Moderation - Anything, including design, can be deadly if not taken in moderation. Just a quick note. I've been getting a lot of SPAM the recently, primarily from 3-4 companies trying to sell thier product via my site, and I'm tired of cleaning it up after the fact. From now on, all comments will have to be approved by me before they appear. Don't be afraid to comment if you are not peddling something or are just plain obnoxious (only had that happen once or twice so far). I will approve and respond to comments as quickly as I can. Comment Moderation - Mr. Anonymous
Unfortunately, my friend from Athens, GA has shown up again. I have called him Mr. Anonymous, and Mr. Asshole before. The latter title is more apt a description. He initially commented today by kicking me when I was down. This was his M.O. the last time he commented. While I am more than happy to discuss different opinions on stocks, whether we agree or disagree, I am not too fond of being penalized for my honesty. For the most part, people have been respectful of that wish, unfortunately Mr. A has not. Therefore, since this is my site, I have put comment moderation on so I can approve or disapprove comments, versus having to delete ones that I find inappropriate.Mr. A's next post had the gall to ask me a question, after insulting me! I deleted that one as well. His subsequent comments were moderated, but I wanted to correct something he said, since I know he is reading this: Writing Calls limit your upside, and your downside risk. Comment Moderation a Thing of the Past!
I’ve decided that since Askimet is doing such a good job in the battle against SPAM, and it’s letting very little SPAM past it at the moment. I’ve decided to disable comment moderation, as I’m sure it’s irratating for you lot when you comment on a post to see that you’ve to wait until I moderate it, before your comment becomes active. Well it’s now a thing of the past. All you’re required to do in order to comment is simply supply your name and email and don’t have more than two URL’s - otherwise your comment goes into moderation! You probably think I a blog yuppy, having comment moderation - but anyone who visited the blog in the early days will know the severe problem we had with SPAM! Pet jerky treats - only in moderation
Following reports of pets becoming after eating jerky treats, some manufacturers are starting to add feeding instructions on their packages. Consumers purchasing chicken jerky pet treats soon may notice something different on the package labels: suggestions on how many such snacks a day they can safely give to their dogs. Some manufacturers and retailers, responding to complaints that Chinese-made treats were making dogs sick, are developing feeding instructions tailored to an animal’s weight, similar to what is required on pet foods designed to be a primary nutrition source. The move is based on anecdotal reports that owners were overfeeding the treats or using them in place of regular pet food, manufacturers said. […] But some suggest the move may be premature. Continuing investigations by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and a Cornell University team, which began about two months ago, have uncovered nothing dangerous in the products and have not definitively tied a spi

I’ve installed a small captcha widget called reCAPTCHA that asks you to type two words before you comment. The upside is that by using this one, you’re helping to confirm words that have been scanned to digitize books. You can read more about it here. I hope this is just a temporary measure. We are sent mixed messages all the time, one minute it's "reduce your fat intake and buy fat free foods" then it's "fat free foods are bad for you". It seems that no one can make up their mind about what you should be eating anymore. Don't even get me started on the whole low carb thing. (I will post something on that later). I think food is something to be enjoyed and not feared. Eating is something that dominates our lives everyday from the cradle to the grave. If you have to dedicate so much time to an activity like that, shouldn't you at least enjoy it? In my opinion that is why so many diets fail. You end up cutting out a lot if not all of your favourite foods. The result is that you end up giving up and binge on the very things you were supposed to cut out. I have done this countless times in the past and with every failed attempt came a new and

      Moderation? Or Free-for-All?
What is your opinion on this parenting debate? I'm of the camp that allows my children to have things in moderation, hoping to thwart their desire to eat sweets until they're sick. I've even used this in my own life, while doing Weight Watchers. If I allow (and make note of it, of course) myself to have one cookie/cake/whateversoundsgoodatthemoment, I don't have the desire to eat the whole cookie jar of cookies.I'm hoping the Princesses will follow through with this moderation when it comes to their finances. I'm trying to teach them that credit cards shouldn't be thought of as "free" money, because, we all know, it's far from free! Wish me luck!

      Day 8 - Say No...In Moderation
THE eighth tip in the 31 days to becoming a better dad is to say "no". I hate to tell you dads, but it's our job to put the foot down. No matter how easy life is, it's still "no" 50% of the time. Lights turn red. It rains unexpectedly. People you like, don't like you. That's life. When we give our children everything without teaching them the flip side, we are setting them up for a rough reality later on. When we teach them that there are boundaries to everything, they learn to enjoy things in moderation instead of excess. As the father of three little girls, I have a hard time saying "no" sometimes myself, but I have a line. I think too many "no's" is stifling, so I have a pretty flexible line. Often, I'll use that leniency to teach them a lesson I otherwise may not have had a chance to. After all, guiding them through a mistake after the fact is a far more educational tactic than "see, I told you so" or getting mad. DAD TALK * How much freedom did you have as a child t

      Efficient Akismet Spam Moderation
Two weeks ago, I talked about ways to prevent comment spam on your blog. Most of them required installing some sort of plug-in or tinkering. Near the bottom of that post I briefly mentioned a Greasemonkey script that can make your weekly task of moderating spam comments much more efficient. The script is called Auntie Akismet and it requires the Greasemonkey Firefox plug-in to be installed first (installation link). If you don’t have Greasemonkey installed, I highly recommend it since it can run a lot of scripts to modify behavior of different sites. For example, it can integrate Google Reader into your Gmail. What it Does What Auntie Akismet does is truncate your spam comments so that no comment will be longer than a line. Most of the time, you can judge by the first line of a comment whether or not it is spam. By doing this, you can view many more comments in a smaller area. I’m sure you’ve all seen those long comments that are almost essay length. To get an

This article is part of the How To Become An Outstanding Person In Twelve Weeks series. I strongly urge that you read the first article in order to get a sense of what is going on here. Moderation (Week 9 of 12) Moderation: Avoid extremes; forbear resenting injuries so much as you think they deserve. In my opinion moderation is a force to be reckoned with. Moderation is the balance between a happy and healthy lifestyle. It is the glue that holds all your goals and ambitions together, so they do not fade or crumble. In my own life I notice that I am most happy when I have the most balance. Keeping in mind what I intend to explore, strengthen and share in this website, let’s call them pillars of success: Health and Fitness Productivity/ Goal Setting / Motivation Communication/Relationships Accelerated Learning Wealth and Abundance Spirituality Self improvement, self help and personal growth These seven pillars represent a very powerful force that sh

Greed is GOOD - In Moderation
A user who’d been back testing a trading strategy contacted me today. He was very distraught because his strategy only produced $1,200 a month with 3 YM contracts. That’s $400 per month on one set of rules. Strange thing about money and percentages and the perception of reality…… Let’s just look at the so called puny results described at making $400.00 per month. Say you told someone who wanted to start a fully stocked computer store business after he told you he only had $5,000. You might laugh at him. You might say, “are you nuts. No one can start a business for only $5,000.” On the other hand look at a very conservative person who keeps his money in a bank. My bank right now is paying .75% on deposited funds. So that $5,000. in my bank would pay our investor $3.13 per month. And the investor would not start screaming at his bank. So what is $400.00 per month worth? Let me ask you. How much would you like to replace your recent bad tr

      Moderation Is A Good Thing
Last month I had a post on whether Christians who drink are pushing this belief on those who don't. This lead to a good deal of response on the matter. I am attempting to read a rather heady book from Blaise Pascal. The guy was a mathmetician and physicist so of course it's going to be a bit on the heavy side. Still, there is a part of me that likes the way he thinks:Too much and too little wine. Give him none, he cannot find truth; give him too much, the same. The guy was French, wine may have been an aid to him. If you want to muck around this work there is a free online version from Christian Classics Ethereal Library.Other worthwile reads:Strange Culture talks about the meaning of success and does it more successfuly than my own timid attempts.Pastor Chryst share's his most recent sermon. And Wilmer shares wisdom from Dave Barry.
