Yesterday started out so good! The sun was shining, the air was crisp and delightful. I had scheduled an obedience and agility lesson with our instructor Dee - our first private lesson. We're getting ready to compete and we needed a fresh eye and perspective on our skills. I learned a lot - lessons aren't really for the dogs. Dogs can show what they know, but the learning comes at home in small da
Confusing day for anyone reading up on the Southwest Florida housing market.......The News-Press reports that Lee second in foreclosures in Florida during September, with one in every 72 homes is facing foreclosure. On the other hand, WINK News reports that Home Sales Hit All Time High. What does it all mean? Well from my perspective, things are so bad they are good. That is unless you are sitti

And the sun continues to shine.Letters Have No Arms has been added to the blogroll. Found this fine blog last night when I was searching for a Fleet Foxes track.Speaking of Fleet Foxes. There are a lot of bands not worth the hype, but in this case I have no problems understanding why the expectations are so high. So I've just ordered the debut album, which will be out next week on Sub Pop (where e
The past few days have been pretty good. There's been a wide variety of positive actions going on around me.Yesterday, I had a PhD student from last term stop by my office. He wanted to thank me for helping him with his writing last term. He asked me to edit his article because it had been rejected by some publication, but his writing wasn't good enough to find and correct the mistakes. It turns o

Ed Ovett is a native New Yorker (I don't know this for certain, but I'm guessing from the accent) and he pronounces my last name confidently and correctly, for which he gains my highest respect.
Recently, Ed set the tone for a comedy episode of Ed's Mixed Bag with (Jerry Lewis) Fly Me To The Moon, which has proven to be my most enduring selection among podcasters looking for a sure-fire jolt of Vegas schmaltz.
I've got my hands over my ears, but it's not helping
But even more than for getting my name right and playing my song, I'm grateful to Ed for introducing me to a program called the Family Comedy Minute, a canned entertainment and staple of Ed's regular, not-funny podcas

Funny Cat CartoonsYesterday I stumbled upon a great site which makes it easy to cartoonize and personalize your photos. This sounded like a great way to me to skip Photoshop for a moment and to have some fun with Chica & Pumuckl and their pictures.Don't they look great? If you also wanna have some fun, try it out: www.befunky.com (But take care, you need to register!)Funny Cat VideoHave you seen this video before? I was laughing so much watching it for the first time at another blog."An Engineer's Guide to Cats"Pumuckl is also Funny AgainFor all who were waiting for an update on Pumuckl: He is doing great! Yesterday he was already hunting flies and playing with paper balls again. Before going to bed he even asked to play Catch-The-Ribbon. His medicine he didn't like (it's too sweet I gu
Happy Spring It's great to see so many signs of spring, even if here in the northeast it doesn't always feel like it. We had a few crocuses (first flowers of spring) appear early on. Then recently I've noticed many green leaves of daffodils coming forth. In February I chose some sunflower seeds and started them indoors. I chose sunflowers because my oldest daughter loves the color yellow. Our girls have been enjoying watching them grow. I had to recently move the young sprouts to a bigger pot. As soon as it warms a little more I'll try placing them outside. I'm looking forward to adding to and watching what flowers come up this spring in our flower garden. You never know what life will sprout. Here's a story of a mixed bag of blessings. "A mixed bag of Blessings" I came upon a
It’s been a relatively quiet news day for the club as the Arsenal side start preparations for the weekend Premiership clash against Roy Keane’s Sunderland.
As always, though, a couple of Arsenal players have had some things to say about the excellent result against Steaua Bucharest. Dutch striker Robin van Persie has kicked things off by saying a big, fat ‘I told you so!’ to the football public after his side’s bright start to the season.
“I first started just with Theo [in June] and then the other lads joined. What I saw was a great togetherness, a great belief and a great, great quality. It was early but I told you at the Amsterdam Tournament this is what I felt. However when I spoke, everyone was laughing.”
I have to say I remember laughing at van Persie as well, but it was not at what the Dutchman was saying but the way that he was saying it. Sometimes when the club has had some good results and van Persie scores a few goals he can get on a
Sector falls with crude prices, broad market. Weaker crude oil prices, a 100-point early drop in the broad stock market and a mixed bag of earnings reports sent energy stocks skidding lower Tuesday. Early trades saw the Amex Oil Index (XOI : 1,442.04, -33.12, -2.2% ) fall 1.9% to 1,447 points. The Amex Natural Gas Index (XNG : 512.46, -11.15, -2.1% ) pounded Monday by sharply lower gas prices, dropped another 2.3% to 512 points, and the Philadelphia Oil Service ($OSX : 283.05, -2.28, -0.8% ) dropped 1.3% to 282. Index Crude for September delivery fell $1.42 to $73.47 a barrel in New York, extending Monday's retreat as the market continues to weigh OPEC comments that its members are considering raising output levels to take some of the upward pressure off oil prices. Views that the summer gasoline season has peaked and that supplies are likely to swing higher also weighed
Making Mondays better one week at a time.
Essential Fish is not about targeting a single niche or promoting today’s most popular products, it’s about sharing what inspires us and what helps us get through the day. This mission is in it’s early stages and so our topics may seem a bit unfocused; making the blog a sort of mixed bag. This is the inspiration behind Monday’s Mixed Bag. It is a recap of the previous week’s posted items and will acknowledge new additions to our Blogroll. Also, in the future, I intend to use this weekly recap as a forum for discussing issues concerning the blog, such as future topics and how to monetize the site. For now, enjoy the simple stuff in this first ever Mixed Bag!

It's been a mixed weekend really with two very different days. Saturday wasn't my finest hour and I ended the day 6% down but was reasonably pleased to of pulled it back as I was 11% down at one point. All was going well after my first lay of The Grey Berry and I was 3% up but the wheels came off briefly after that and I layed two winners in a row which hasn't happened in quite a while, Prospect Court just holding on in a tight finish and Cesare winning impressively in the end. In hindsight maybe I shouldn't of layed Cesare but I felt several factors were against him. The two year system was my next bet and it duly lost at 11/8 and pulled me back 3%. Madaarek was my final lay of the afternoon and I was very happy to see how short it was, I had him as a 4/1 shot at best. The evening bets were just the 2 two year old system bets with one winning and one losing and a slight loss on the evening of 0.9% and 6% overall for the day. I wasn't too downheartened as I have been on a very good
In my ongoing attempts to increase the traffic to my blog, I got it into my head a few weeks ago to seek out free blog review sites. I found a few and submitted my blog to them. So far, three such sites have published their reviews of this blog. The first is the worst:http://www.theweblogreview.com/review/3333/...In which the reviewer was kind enough to spell my name incorrectly twice (in different ways) and correctly zero times. The second is considerably better:http://blogs.qoody.net/reviews/the-repeal-of-gravity-blog/...In which I got some good advice. I'm not sure whether it will truly influence my blogging habits, but at least it's food for thought. The third is my favorite:http://reviewmyblogforfree.blogspot.com/ This one is very brief (which is neither criticism nor praise, rather just observation), and complimentary (which is flattering). I scored pretty well on this one, which is nice.Unfortunately, none of these three reviews has resulted in a substantial increase in my traffi
Microsoft Corp. contends that Windows Vista is its most secure operating system to date. It’s a audacious claim, to be sure, but there just might be something to it, too. According to Symantec Corp.’s Advanced Threat Research (ATR) team, Windows Vista does deliver tangible security improvements—although Vista itself is still far from invulnerable, [...]
Last week seemed to produce a mixed bag of results! Woodygo ran green, but with a great deal of promise, and will be out later in the month, when I’m sure he’ll still need the run to prepare him mentally for the future. I think he is a good horse in the making.
Smokin Joe travelled really well through his race and then again failed to produce in the closing stages. I think he’s getting a bit too wise for his own good. However, I’m still confident we’ll win at least one race with him soon, when things all fall right for him. He runs on Wednesday at Lingfield, over either seven furlongs or a mile, which should suit a bit better than 1 1/4m.
I felt Hurricane Spirit ran really well. The Racing Post gave him a mark of 102+ and made it his best performance to date. If it had been a handicap he would have been a lot better off with the winner, so you would have to be pleased. The draw also didn’t help - he had to go three wide the whole way round, while the

The last two speeches given by Federal Reserve members Cathy E. Minehan, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, and Donald L. Kohn, Vice Chairman of the Federal Reserve shed further light on the Fed's recent cautious yet somewhat mixed stance on the housing downturn and it's possible effects on the overall economy.
Last Friday, Minehan offered an interestingly conflicted outlook seemingly remaining sanguine yet tentative.
Initially, Minehan frames the key concern of the "spillover†effect that the housing downturn could have on consumption quite nicely by stating:
"In the nonfarm business sector, inflation adjusted compensation growth fell short of productivity by 2 percentage points or more for several years until 2006. This slow wage growth occurred even as business profits were at historically high levels, causing worry that workers are not getting their fair share of the pie. Indeed, median household income fell in real terms in every year from 1999 to
In most traditional Chinese households, families make soup all the time. This is called "bo tong" which means "making soup". But this is not your traditional soup like chicken noodle or minestrone--it's a concoction that involves Chinese herb/medicine mixes that are simmered with miscellaneous parts of the chicken or the cow (I will spare you the details).
Anyways, back home I had the pleasure
