      Mitt Romney Criticizes Obama’s Experience
Former Presidential candidate and Governor of Massachusetts Mitt Romney went on CNN this morning to play the role of political attack man, which is the only thing he knows how to do, in order to criticize Barack Obama’s experience, reminding viewers that Obama has never run a business or enterprise or government. From here. First: “I am amused about this notion of elitist, given that when you’re raised by a single mom, when you’re on food stamps for a while when you were growing up, you went to school on scholarship….” he said, also talking about his wife Michelle’s money troubles. “So when somebody makes that argument, particularly given that I spent my entire life working with workers, low-income communities to try to make people’s lives a little bit better, then that’s when you know we’re in political silly season,” he told a veterans forum in Washington, Pa. Obama can't be this naive. In America, esteem doesn't come from your family background. In fact, a tough background is, in individual achievement-oriented America, prest

A Conservative Christian Republican outlines why he can't vote for Mitt Romney. For the past two presidential elections, I've voted Republican. I'm fairly conservative with some of my values, although I do root for the underdog from time to time. In yesterday's News-Sentinel, Mormon beliefs were clearly spelled out in an excellent article. After reading them, I now must declare that if Mitt Romney is chosen as the Republican nominee, I won't be voting for him. Some people say that this is un-American. Are we now declaring that voters must separate their religion from their votes? That would be un-American. In fact, it would be totalitarian. I consider myself to be an evangelical Trinitarian Christian. As such, I can't divorce my faith from my vote. Therefore, I will not vote for Romney in the Presidential primaries or national election. There are several key doctrinal issues that cause problems for me.Firstly, Mormons are not Christians. They consider themselves to be, but the

From TMP:A spokesman for the Mitt Romney campaign is thus far refusing to say whether Romney sees any positive role in America for atheists and other non-believers, after Election Central inquired about the topic yesterdayIt's a sign that Romney may be seeking to submerge evangelical distaste for Mormonism by uniting the two groups together in a wider culture war. Romney's speech has come under some criticism, even from conservatives like David Brooks and Ramesh Ponnuru, for positively mentioning many prominent religions but failing to include anything positive about atheists and agnostics.Indeed, the only mentions of non-believers were very much negative. Mitt Romney delivered the speech below (in 3 parts) to once again make Republican voters get past their religious bigotry towards Mormonism and vote him to be their candidate for President. Unfortunately, Romney makes this speech excluding the fact that many people today have no religion. Basically, atheists and agnostics continue to be irrelevant, possibly because most of us are suspicious of religion and politics continuing to dangerously mix.In part 1, Romney states flat out that freedom needs religion. No, it does not. Freedom is something those with religion and those without must have. No exceptions. Liberty is not a God-given right unless God is proven to exist. In part 2, Romney says there is a movement towards secularism in which religion is not to be recognized in any way in government. Mitt Romney’s Lack of Understanding of Religion and Government

I do question whether this speech will reassure Republicans who had doubts about Romney but we will need to wait for the reaction. In terms of a sensible statement on religion and politics, the speech was a disaster. There has been considerable speculation regarding Mitt Romney’s upcoming speech on his religious beliefs, with many noting the dangers of this backfiring. In a battle over the specifics of one’s religious beliefs, Romney is at a disadvantage against Mike Huckabee in appealing to religious Christian voters. In speaking about this, Romney risks making this distinction even more apparent and risks turning their religious views into the deciding factor in the race. Romney must appeal to religious tolerance, but cannot go as far as John Kennedy did in 1960 before a Republican audience. Just a few sections from Kennedy’s speech demonstrate how much the Republican voters of 2007 differ from the American voters of 1960: I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute–where no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote–where no ch

Will his philosphy fix the health insurance industry?"Health care leaders in Florida and across the nation understand the critical need to make health insurance more available and more affordable for all Americans," said Governor Romney. "The answer is not more government, but more innovation. We must harness the power of free market reforms to provide private insurance options to our citizens without a tax increase and without a big government takeover."In a joint statement, the Coalition Chairmen said, "As Governor of Massachusetts,

Mitt Romney: Surprising Turnaround (Book Review)
I try to pride myself on not affiliating with one particular party, although I've been leaning towards a Biden (in my wildest dreams) or Obama presidency. It's not difficult to want a Democrat in the White House in a knee-jerk reaction to Bush's inept administration. However, to get the full picture, I had to read this book by Mitt Romney and do some research on this frontrunner in the Republican primary. I fully expected to hate the guy, considering some of his preposterous stances on social issues, but it says a lot that I finished the book with an extremely positive impression of Romney. The preface that Romney added to the book for the paperback edition was by far the most offensive part of the book. I was almost ready to stop reading when I read about Romney's stance on gay rights (basically that they should have none), and even more vexed (and amused) by his comparison of stem cell research to Aldous Huxley's Brave New World. The worst part of the preface is the paragraph

GOP presidential candidate, former MA Governor, Mitt Romney is in Atlanta today and gave away lunch at The Varsity this afternoon. How dare he? This isn't an election for student body president. We're dealing with an election for President of the United States. My vote cannot be bought. How dare he! Don't get me wrong but Mitt can do what he wants and campaign how he wants but I sick of politics as usual and pandering for votes in this fashion. I look forward to throw out politics as usual in the trashcan next February when I vote for Mike Huckabee in the GOP primary!

Mitt Romney "Not Running as Mormon?"
What do you make of Mitt Romney's recent statement during an interview on conservative radio that he is "not running as a Mormon?" Unless I'm missing something fairly obvious here, Romney is running as a Mormon. He has chosen this faith freely and could reject it for a reality-based belief system if he wanted to do so. It seems absurd that he would not realize that his religion, which many Americans associate with polygamy, would not be a topic of interest.I noted how Romney said he was proud of his faith one minute and then indicated he did not want to talk about it the next. As Pam at Pam's House Blend explained, "Mitt's trying to navigate attracting the bible beaters by citing his faith without drawing too much attention to Mormonism specifically..." It does appear that he's trying to have it both ways, and it is hard to imagine that this will prove successful. It seems to me that when a candidate uses his or her religious beliefs to claim morality, as a rationale for opposing r

John Cox with 41 votes The Iowa straw poll results do not mean much as many of the top-tier candidates like Rudy Giuliani, John McCain, and Fred Thompson refused to participate in the Iowa straw poll, anything less than a solid first-place finish would have been devastating to the Romney candidacy. It starts off friendly enough, but begins to become a little heated just before the commercial break when the host starts to question his Mormon beliefs and abortion. The camera continues to roll during the break, seemingly without Mitt’s knowledge as the confrontation becomes even more heated.   The best part of the video is how they quickly come back on the air for a thirty second spot to say goodbye as if nothing happened, only to return to the argument as soon as they are off the air.   I say good for Mitt, stand up for yourself.   This video is pretty long at around twenty minutes, but it is riviting.

Mitt Romney Editorial that Appeared in the New Hampshire Union Leader
Below is an article written by Mitt Romney that appeared in the New Hampshire Union Leader on July 12th. It is no secret that an overwhelming majority of Americans believe that it is time for our country to change our current direction and set a new course to meet a new generation of challenges that affect the future of American families, businesses, military and security. To meet these challenges, there needs to be a change in Washington. Both political parties claim to represent change, but there are major differences. When Republicans talk of change, we talk about opportunity, freedom and the people who can make these changes. When Democrats talk of change they advocate big government, big welfare, big taxes and big brother. Time and time again, it has been proven that these big government policies do not work, and they take our nation down the wrong path. Democrats talk about raising taxes on people. We talk about cutting spending by government. For Democrats, it is always governme

The cats puked every day. But never mind, dog was happy to get the between meal snacks. Of course, this probably contributed to the doggy diarrhea which put Melanie in such an uncharacteristic bitchy mood. You may be surprised to learn I don't think Melanie will fondly recall her journey across the desert, with temperatures soaring to 120 degrees, playing chauffeur to two barfing cats and a dog with the runs. On the other hand, maybe next time she will wish she was the girl driving alone swizzling ice cold Cokes and doing a few leisurely tokes. But that is the kind of price a person sometimes pays when they think they are so gosh darned competent. But I am ki

They don’t believe in God the way I do, but by definition, they believe in God.” So what he was really saying is Republicans in general don’t believe in God, no

He also stands behind the president on his Iraq war policy, which I like, but his campaign seems to be floundering and I don’t think he will be able to regain momentum. It turns out Romney has been on only two hunting trips in his entire life. Romney aides have confirmed that the former governor flip-flop's only hunting experience came on only two trips: as a 15-year-old, when he hunted rabbits with his cousins on a ranch in Idaho, and last year, when he shot quail on a fenced game preserve in Georgia (Dick Cheney favorite style and a favorite of other hunters whom are too afraid to venture out into the scary forest).Caption: Republican Hopeful and NRA Lifetime Member Mitt Romney Sees a Gun For The 3rd Time in His Entire Life

Mitt Romney: Amend The Constitution To Ban Gay Marriage
There is an article here about Mitt Romney calling for a constitutional amendment to ban gay marriage. Here is a little back-story about how gay marriage was forced on the Mass. residents. Most Americans know that Massachusetts is the only state that allows gay marriage. And they probably also know that Mitt Romney was governor when gay marriage was legalised. What I’m not sure many people know around the country is how this came to pass. This was not a bill that passed through the state house and senate, then on to Romney’s desk for a signature. This was a case of liberal, activist judges instituting their own personal policy preferences onto the citizens of Massachusetts, where they had no right to do so. They forced Mass. residents to accept something that polls show a vast majority of residents don’t want. A citizen’s group gathered up more than enough signatures to have this issue go to the citizens for a vote in 2008 on this issue and have the constitution

      Mitt Romney Enters The Race
Yesterday, former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney formally kicked off his presidential campaign. He made the announcement at the Henry Ford Museum. During the speech he attempted to distinguish himself from the other candidates by taking advantage of his position as somewhat of a political outsider. He highlighted this by saying, “I do not believe Washington can be transformed from within by lifelong politicians.” The issues that Romney will have to face are his religion and his past stances on social issues. Romney is a Mormon, which wouldn’t be a problem except for the fact that a large group of his party happen to be evangelical Christians. Meaning that they pretty much agree on the social issues, just not on God. Unfortunately for Romney, God is a huge issue when dealing with evangelical Christians. As far as his past stances on issues, Romney supported abortion rights earlier in campaigns and also claimed that he would advocate gay rights during a 1994

Two contrasting views of Mitt Romney
Two Boston Globe columnists have recently offered rather differing views of their departing Republican Governor, Mitt Romney. Re-printed in the Deseret Morning News, Scott Helman argues that Romney's claims to be the standard-bearer of Reagan conservatism might have more merit than some others'. "There are many similarities between the two," Helman argues, citing their battles against liberalism, their speaking style and their "Hollywood looks". Both, Helman continues, exude optimism even in the face of perceived existential threats (the Evil Empire in Reagan's day; the Axis of Evil now). Both moved their positions on abortion to suit the electoral climate (OK - not exactly a display of strength of character, but a similarity nonetheless.) To the Globe's Joan Vennochi - never a friend to Romney - that last issue of abortion is central to understanding Romney and, in her view, his key personality flaw. Mitt Romney hires key ad man
There's been plenty going on in the last few days, including some important statements from some big name candidates, which we'll come on to shortly. First, here's a story from last Thursday's Boston Globe reporting that Massachusetts Republican Governor Mitt Romney has hired what the Globe calls "bare-knuckles GOP ad man" Alex Castellanos. Castellanos' reputation, at least in the Globe's view, is as a master of negative campaigning. He produced an ad against black Senatorial candidate Harvey Gant in North Carolina that "depicted a pair of white hands ripping up a rejection letter from an employer" to highlight Gant's support of racial quotas. He also produced an anti-Al Gore ad that superimposed the 'rats' from the word 'Democrats' over attacks on Gore's prescription drug plan. Castellanos claims the 'rats' thing was coincidental, and I'm inclined to believe him on the grounds that it seems a little too subtle for his style. "The truest spots, most factual spots,
