Your secret is safe with me: Mitchell Report
Dear Mitchell Report,You must think you're a pretty big deal. I don't blame you— you're all over the news, exposing cheaters, frauds and artificially bulked up baseball players. Highly skilled millionaire athletes tremble at the mention of your name. I'm glad you're around to set the record straight and get Major League Baseball back on track. But I can't help but notice your considerable bulk. I mean, you're pretty thick for a "report". You've gone through some changes of your own-- I've seen pictures. A few months ago, before you were released to the public, you were what-- 110, maybe 115 pages max? Now here you are, a 400 plus page monster. Can you even find a folder that fits you anymore? I'm sure it started innocently enough. You probably used a thesaurus to replace some small word

Why isn't Roger Clemens speaking out about the Mitchell Report?
The feared Mitchell Report was finally out a few days ago with a list including more than 80 names of baseball players who are believed to be involded in the use of steroids. One of the most shocking was Roger Clemens, who is obviously one of the most respected players of the Yankees and, of course, the entire MLB. The surprise of including the New York Yankees golden boy for using steroids during the 1998-2001 seasons was really big, and now he's standing on a really akward position, with everybody expecting him to say something about it. Maybe some are actually hoping that he says it was all a lie. However, Clemens has remained almost silent, apparently waiting for the best time to give answers to all our questions. The only statement given by Roger Clemens so far was poor and ambiguous. Sure, he denies what has been said about him, but then he starts claiming he shouldn't be part of that report because of his 25 years of public life. So, it seems some think they are untou

Yep, the naysayers were on the front line when the Mitchell Report came out, quick to dismiss what it had to say and to blast Bud Selig. After all, it was pointless, right? The Mitchell Report at a glance
Fishing for guppies and landing a whopperFormer Senate majority leader George Mitchell's report on drug use in baseball was released on Friday afternoon, and sent the pundits and talking heads venting over the airwaves this past weekend. It is a behemoth of a report at 409 pages, and for all of those with some spare time this holiday season, you can download it here, while those with admittedly less time can view the executive summary here.In the beginning many thought this was a fishing expedition of epic proportions, and was destined to return empty handed, or with only a few small time offenders. However in the end they landed a legend of baseball, the seven-time Cy Young winner Roger Clemens. Many other names were included in the report, and a history of drug use in baseball over the past 15 years is an important addition. Also, on Sunday night Alex Rodriguez appeared in an interview on 60 Minutes, denying any drug use and also stating that he never once saw any illicit activity

Perception is Reality: Baseball's Drug Problem and the Mitchell Report; Segui/Roberts, Orioles Rundown
As the Mitchell Report was released this week, the nation's reaction has ranged from apathy to downright anger. Right now, much has not been heard from the Baltimore Orioles or any of their players at all regarding the report itself despite the consistent cloud around the team for years. The more I read of it, the reputations of players, who may have not have done anything are ruined off some evidence are ruined forever and it is based on a lot of innuendo, hearsay and the words of two trainers, Jason Giambi and Frank Thomas. Many players had the chance to speak, but they didn't. That's the problem.Whether or not we like it, drugs are in very sport and there's no way to stop it. Honestly, will all the travel in sports, time zone changes, and everything else - do you really think guys are playing without help? The sad thing is that we try to stop drug use amongst teenagers and young adults, but seeing the money in sports and also the lack of punishment -- why would anyone not want to d

The Mitchell Report will give MLB a major surprise
It seems it's about to be out for the world to see it, and it will be shocking for a lot of people. Senator George Mitchell did a good job investigating the use of steroids on baseball players, and it will be released in the Mitchell Report.  The MLB is preparing for the possibility of a list of names, which is expected to include some very known players. It seems it's going to be a huge story when it comes out! But nothing is certain yet. MLB representatives are trying to stop all the fuzz around this report saying nobody knows if there are some big names listed there and, in that case, they also have no idea of which MLB players could appear there.  Now, they're probably thinking just in case there is a list. But it's obvious that it will be like an earthquake for the Major Leagues of Baseball and their baseball betting fans. Many baseball players' career could end up in the dumpster because of this investigation, and their teams could also be affected in some way.  The

Poking around, I haven’t seen any word of a reaction yet from any specific player who’s name appears in the dreaded Mitchell Report (dum dum dummmm) which I guess makes the following an exclusive. We’ve got never before seen images of Roger Clemens, probably the biggest name outed in the report besides Barry Bonds, immediately after learning that he had been named in the report. Flying into a rage upon hearing the news, Clemens proceeded to smash an object that we can’t identify due to that weird BAM effect the camera picked up. He then roared mightily at his handlers who scurried from the room. What Major League Baseball & Players Need To Do With The Mitchell Report
Yesterday, the Mitchell Report shocked the sports world and America. The story about drug use in baseball was item A on all the newscasts, and ESPN devoted the vast majority of their programming on Thursday to coverage of the ground breaking event.Rather than go into some long winded essay, this what I feel players and Major League Baseabll must do.Unless players start speaking the truth, stop hiding behind the union, or towing the company line, baseball will never move on and we'll never find the answers we so-called want. The sick thing is though the so-called rats have been proven right. In cases like these, sadly, burden of proof does not matter so much; alas, the problem is that perception is reality and if your name appears in the report, you might as well consider yourself guilty until proven innocent. We, as some of the savvier fans may know that some players may indeed be innocent of the charges the report alleged, but some will paint anyone in the report, whether they had a

Roberts, Tejada and Former Orioles on the Mitchell Report...
In what is a continuation of a dark cloud over the Orioles organization, the names of Brian Roberts, former team members, Miguel Tejada & several others have appeared in the Mitchell Report.Right now, Roberts is still on the Orioles, but rumored to possibly be dealt; Tejada was traded to Houston yesterday. Former Sen. George Mitchell's report on steroid use in baseball released today mentions at least 16 current and former Orioles including second baseman Brian Roberts and recently traded shortstop Miguel Tejada. The others named are: current outfielder Jay Gibbons, who recently admitted using human growth hormone and accepted a 15-day suspension, and ex-Orioles Rafael Palmeiro, Larry Bigbie, David Segui, Jack Cust, Jason Grimsley, Jerry Hairston, Tim Laker, Gregg Zaun, Kevin Brown, Howie Clark, Todd Williams, Kent Mercker and Gary Matthews Jr.Well, for most hardcore fans of the team, most of the names are those that have been heard in the media before. The Mitchell Report - Thoughts
Well, the Mitchell Report has come out and when I was at a Holiday luncheon, my Blackberry was ringing with incoming emails and text messages about the news that was leaked before Senator Mitchell gave his press conference.Let's say, I was not surprised.I follow baseball closely, as you all know, perhaps much too closely for my own good at times; however, for most hardcore and savvier fans, the names that have been released so far are ones we have heard once before in reports, on the news, or amongst overselves.Roger Clemens, Miguel Tejada and Andy Pettitte were named in the long-awaited Mitchell Report on Thursday, an All-Star roster linked to steroids and other performance-enhancing drugs that put a question mark -- if not an asterisk -- next to some of baseball's biggest moments... Several stars named in the report could pay the price in Cooperstown, much the way Mark McGwire was kept out of the Hall of Fame this year merely because of steroids suspicion.Besides Clemens and Pettit

The Mitchell Report Expected To Be Released This Afternoon...
Well, the long awaited Mitchell Report will be out today, which is expected to be nothing short of a bombshell, but also looks to be a fair and balanced look at the drug issue in baseball.According various media outlets, the report is expected to be sharply critical of both Major League Baseball and the players' union for turning a blind eye to the proliferation of steroids in baseball.Despite what many have thought, Mitchell's findings are seen to be harsh towards Major League Baseball and will name anywhere from 60 to 80 players. In addition, the report is allegedly expected to report deep problems within the culture of Major League Baseball. From the Baltimore Examiner: One source said that while the report will cite problems "top to bottom," it also will expose "deep problems, the number of players, high-level MVPs and All-Stars," as well as clubhouse personnel who allowed steroids and other banned substances in clubhouses or knew about it and didn't say anything. The rest of the

      Mitchell Report due today
Former Senator's report promises to be a 'huge story'Eighteen months ago, former US Senator George Mitchell launched a probe into steroid use in baseball. The probe is the result of an unprecedented shake-up in Major League Baseball that started as far back as 1998, when reporters noticed a tub of androstenedione in aspiring home run champ Mark McGwire's locker. McGwire went on to hit 70 homers that season, smashing the former record of 61. According to San Francisco Chronicle reporters Mark Fainaru-Wada and Lance Williams in their book Game of Shadows, this helped spur Barry Bonds to begin using steroids in pursuit of McGwire's new record (and fame). For the next few years things were relatively quiet in baseball, until all hell broke loose in September 2003 when Victor Conte's BALCO offices were raided. We all know the resulting shockwaves that went through sports, and we still feel it---in October Marion Jones finally confessed to using drugs, and just this week she was fin

Mitchell Drug Report to Be Released Thursday
By Stephen RhodesIn what is expected to be described as a "mind-blowing" report, the Associated Press learned Wednesday that the Mitchell Report will expose Major League Baseball MVP's, All-Stars, and will call for beefed-up testing by an outside agency to clean up the game. Specifically, the report, headed by Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, will include 60-80 names of players who are linked to performance-enhancing substances plus more information that exposes major problems afflicting the sport. However, according to two sources, amphetamines are not addressed in the report. One person who is familiar with the final version of the report who wishes to remain anonymous (big surprise there) states that the report is "very thorough" and some findings were surprising; the source also said that blame was assigned to both the Commissioner's office and the baseball union. The source also said, "MLB's not going to love it, the union's not going to love it," In addition to the

The Mitchell Report Is Allegedly In The Hands of Major League Baseball...
It looks like business is about to pick up -- real soon. According to the New York Daily News, Major League Baseball has the Mitchell Report...Major League Baseball officials are reviewing George Mitchell's long-anticipated steroid report at the former Senate majority leader's law offices, 21 months after commissioner Bud Selig asked Mitchell to investigate the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball.Officials arrived at Mitchell's Manhattan office Tuesday, according to sources familiar with the investigation who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the topic, and began what is believed to be a 48-hour review period before Mitchell releases the report on Thursday. The report is believed to contain the names of 60-80 former and current players, according to sources, and is based in large part on information provided to Mitchell by former clubhouse attendant Kirk Radomski."We cannot comment on anything," MLB spokesman Rich Levin said.MLB officials were revie

The Mitchell Report Out Next Thursday!!!
Well, folks it looks like the long-awaited Mitchell report is coming out next week! From Boston.comIt's the findings of former Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell's 20-month investigation into performance-enhancing drugs, a modern-day Black Sox scandal that has tarnished many of the game's greatest stars and records.Although some are sure to claim it's one-sided and outdated, it has given players and executives cause for pause."Well, it ain't Merry Christmas or Happy New Year for somebody," Cincinnati Reds manager Dusty Baker said. And this is where a conflict of interest takes place...But he also is a director with the World Series champion Red Sox, a role players say makes him hopelessly conflicted and an agent of Selig, who appointed him. Players also claim Mitchell refused to show those accused the evidence against them, denying them a chance to refute the allegations.Let's say someone from the Red Sox appears on his report, what happens?I would venture to know why George M

The Long Awaited Mitchell Report Will Be Out Before X-Mas...
Well, it looks like the Mitchell Report will be out before X-mas...From ESPN: The San Francisco Chronicle reported that according to two officials with knowledge of former Sen. George Mitchell's probe of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball, the report will be released in the two weeks before Christmas, rather than during the winter meetings. That means that teams could make deals during the winter meetings, only to learn two weeks later that the free agent they just signed faced possible discipline by Major League Baseball for past use of banned substances. It is anticipated that the report will name names of current and former major league players who have used performance-enhancing substances including anabolic steroids and human growth hormone."The names of players will come out that people will be mad about," Los Angeles Angels owner Arte Moreno said of the report last week, according to the Los Angeles Times. "Some of my information is secondhand, but I know there's going to b

Andrew Mitchell: While politicians fiddle in Bali, the trees are burning
In two weeks time, Heads of State and thousands of delegates will gather on the Indonesian island of Bali for the mother of all climate change meetings.Uncomfortably for Indonesia, the host of the Bali conference, it was labeled this year the third largest emitter of carbon dioxide in the world, behind China and the US 85 per cent of its emissions come from cutting and burning forests for timber and land, much of it for palm oil production. Britain is the EU's largest importer of palm oil that is an ingredient in hundreds of products we use every day from cakes and crisps, to vegetable spreads. The fact is we are all in this together, from Britain to Borneo. So, well done Sainsbury's for announcing this week to make palm oil used in its products sustainable. So what else is to be done?Burning rainforests cause around 20 per cent of all carbon emissions, more than the entire global transport sector, and just behind energy, yet until this year it has been little more than a footnote on

The Mitchell Investigation; An Active Player Helping Out?
According to Tom Verducci of Sports Illustrated, an active player is coming on board to help out with the investigation — voluntarily. Twenty months into his investigation of steroid use in Major League Baseball, former Sen. George Mitchell for the first time has obtained voluntary cooperation from an active player. According to a source familiar with the investigation, the player, whom the source did not name, volunteered to speak with Mitchell in the coming weeks, ending the wall of silence Mitchell had encountered in trying to get active players to cooperate without the leverage of subpoena power. The source described the player as one of several players Mitchell wanted to question because of their previous public comments opposing steroid use, not because the player was connected to any steroid use of his own. The source said the interview with the player was scheduled to take place “very soon.” This is very interesting, and you have got wonder what would compel someone to do

      Elizabeth Mitchell and family
Amy, Hailey, and I went up to Ravinia this weekend to catch a rare Chicago performance from our favorite children's artist Elizabeth Mitchell. She performed songs from all three of her albums including many from her latest, You Are My Little Bird. For those that don't know, she (along with her husband Dan) are both members of the superb indie-pop band Ida when they aren't being parents and singing kids songs.Elizabeth performed a few songs with a full band, but was mainly accompanied on stage by Dan and their daughter Storey who managed to pull off a few great harmonica riffs. Anyhow, the kids were dancing, laughing, clapping, and (of course) crying. We briefly talked to Elizabeth and Dan after the show and (much to our amazement) she sang a little lullaby of "Ladybug Picnic" directly to our visibly exhausted daughter Hailey. It was a wonderful little moment that made us love Elizabeth as a person as well as a performer. Support these wonderful musicians by buying their album

      Blake Mitchell suspended
South Carolina quarterback Blake Mitchell was one of three players suspended for the opening game against Louisiana-Lafayette for missing summer school classes. Steve Fink, a spokesman for the athletic department, said Thursday that Mitchell, tailback Bobby Wallace and cornerback Chris Hail were suspended for the Gamecocks’ opener Sept. 1 at home. The three players also were suspended from the team’s first two practices this fall for violating an athletic department policy by missing classes. The suspension won’t be that costly anyway.

Pelosi threatens to come back to Arizona unless people re-elect Mitchell
U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi stopped by Arizona to appear with two of Arizona’s congressmen and tour the Veterans Medical Center. While she was in town, she also expressed her support for freshman Congressman Harry Mitchell who will likely face a spirited re-election campaign next fall. Pelosi’s message was loud and clear:“If you don’t promise to re-elect Harry Mitchell, I am going to keep coming back,” assured Speaker Pelosi, “And coming and coming and coming. Look, I like Harry Mitchell. He does what I say and he is a charming dancer. If you don’t get your act together, you are going to see me around here all the time.”Initially, the Speaker’s visit was a mystery to some who believe that her San Francisco popularity does not translate well in Arizona, but it appears that she has found a way to use this issue to her advantage.“Oh God, No!” exclaimed Susie Snider, a moderate, Republican soccer mom, “It’s like I am being forced to vote for Mitchell again. The Black Diamond Detective Agency by Eddie Campbell and C. Gaby Mitchell
As anyone looking for the effect of Spider-Man box office grosses on Marvel Comics's Spider-Man comic sales can tell you tell, movies and comics--though both visual storytelling mediums (though, aren't chapter breaks and white spaces in written fiction also visual cues), they don't have much in common. I had no idea, going in to The Black Diamond Detective Agency, it was based on a screenplay. I might have had my expectations adequately adjusted if I had. Black Diamond is fine, but there are a handful of scenes just rip for the rousing score and for Brad Pitt to shoot out the room. Eddie Campbell doesn't photo-reference stars in to the comic, which is rather nice, given how often it happens in Marvel and DC series, but it's still obvious what scene we're watching... sorry, reading. And the Brad Pitt casting was just process of elimination.Other significant storytelling problems include the absence of a narrator. There's Brad Pitt, who's a fugitive for some of it, so he's not
