      Mississippi Republican Votes
I've been puzzled by the Mississippi exit polls which indicate that Republicans made up 13% of all the votes in the Democratic primary there, and 76% of them voted for Senator Clinton.  This is a sharp reversal from most previous states, where Senator Obama captured the majority of Republican voters.  Andrew Romano at Newsweek made this post trying to explain the vote.  It shows that the Republican voters who voted for Senator Clinton tended to like her less then they liked Senator McCain - but they disliked Senator Obama even more.  Of all Clinton Republican voters in Mississippi 94% said Obama did not inspire them, 89% said they would be dissatisfied if he were the nominee and 86% said that Obama was not trustworthy.   The same numbers for Senator Clinton are 61%, 41% and 72% respe

      Obama wins Mississippi
Obama continued his dominance in the southern states with a 61%-37% win over Hillary Clinton. With 99% reporting he added almost 100,000 votes to his popular vote lead and appears to have won 19 of the 33 delegates (which would net him 5 on Clinton). Those trying to figure out a way that Hillary can somehow declare a popular vote victory were not likely considering the possibility that she would lose a state like Mississippi by 100K. To put it in perspective, the vote from yesterdays state nearly wipes out her popular vote victory from the much larger state of Texas. This should show you that it isn't just about winning states, but also about winning states big. Obama has been able to win several states by wide margins, while Clinton has struggled to find big wins. I doubt we will hear

      Obama snags Mississippi
He's gaining by the minute. Obama Wins Mississippi (via MSNBC) NBC News declared Barack Obama as the projected winner in the Mississippi primary on Tuesday, the latest in a string of racially polarized contests across the Deep South and a final tune-up before April's high-stakes race with Hillary Rodham Clinton in Pennsylvania. Obama was winning roughly 90 percent of the black vote but only about one-third of the white vote, extending a pattern that carried him to victory in earlier primaries in South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia and Louisiana. I think, considering what Hillary Clinton's surrogate said about Barack Obama, This is just payback. I mean, Hillary, I believe is trying to cause division in the Democrat Party. I think it's immature and shows much about her. Senator Ob

Obama wins Mississippi primary, new race row rocks Democrats BILOXI: Barack Obama on Tuesday surged to victory in Mississippi's Democratic primary (Watch) , in a new triumph over Hillary Clinton, as a fierce new race row rocked their bitter White House race. The Illinois senator punched back with his second win in a row since the former first lady pulled her campaign back from the brink of extinction, with huge victories in Texas and Ohio last week. As Mississippi voted, the tone of the race took another nasty lurch, as the Obama camp demanded the dismissal of Clinton's supporter Geraldine Ferraro, for saying: "If Obama was a white man, he would not be in this position." With its 33 nominating delegates up for grabs, conservative Mississippi, reliably Republican in general elections, was

Obama is expected to win this state and Hillary is hoping to win her fair share of the delegates. The funny thing is that if Obama would happen to win by a large enough margin to pick up 23 of the 33 delegates he would effectively win the month of March in terms of delegate count. Not likely to happen, but it does give you some perspective on how little Hillary really gained during the portion of the campaign where most believe she had her best results.

Moreover, there seem to be very few atheist, humanist, or freethought groups in the state. If you are an atheist in Mississippi, even if you are not able to be particularly open about it, I'd really like to hear from you. The Poor in Mississippi Lag Behind in Hurricane Aid
This story is a national disgrace. How can it be that after two years, citizens affected by the ravages of Katrina are still suffering and not receiving the help that they so desperately need?Like the other Gulf Coast states battered by Hurricane Katrina, Mississippi was required by Congress to spend half of its billions in federal grant money to help low-income citizens trying to recover from the storm. But so far, the state has spent $1.7 billion in federal money on programs that have mostly benefited relatively affluent residents and big businesses. The money has gone to compensate many middle- and upper-income homeowners, to aid utility companies whose equipment was damaged and to prop up the state’s insurance system.Just $167 million, or about 10 percent of the federal money, has been spent on programs dedicated to helping the poor, mostly through a smaller grant program for lower-income homeowners. And while that total will certainly increase, Mississippi has set aside just 23 pe

Mississippi Governor's Race: Bush Crony vs. Theocrat
On Tuesday, my fellow Mississippi residents and I will be asked to cast our votes in the gubernatorial race. Republican incumbent and Bush crony, Haley Barbour, faces Democratic challenger, John Eaves. Ordinarily, I'd feel fairly comfortable voting for whoever the Democratic Party decided to run. Barbour is about as good-ole-boy as good ole boys get. Not only does he want to restrict a woman's right to make reproductive decisions, but he's notorious for his corruption in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Unfortunately, Eaves is no ordinary Democrat. The heart of his campaign involves pushing school prayer. To say that I am undecided in this election would be quite an understatement. I despise Barbour and all he stands for (e.g., maintaining the highest grocery tax in America while running the poorest state in the country, cronyism, corruption, support for the criminal who currently occupies the White House, etc.). But do I despise him enough to support a theocrat? Is it fair to call Eave

You can read the per curiam decision here. Attorneys are still trying to procure a stay for Earl Wesley Berry of Mississippi. Arkansas’ Don William Davis and Flordia’s Mark Dean Schwab have also not yet received stays of execution. Religion and Poverty in Mississippi
In feudal Europe, Christianity helped to maintain the rigid class structure. The landowners benefited greatly from serfs who were convinced that complying with the unfair system in this life would lead to heavenly rewards. The church, in turn, received money from the landowners. It seems everyone benefited except those pesky serfs. Something similar is happening today in Mississippi, and I cannot help but wonder what role religion is playing in maintaining our despicable status quo.Let's start with one simple, undisputed fact: Mississippi is the poorest state in America. This is nothing new, as I'm fairly certain we've been in the bottom 5% since the Civil War. Reasonable people can disagree about the historic causes for this fact and about how best to change it, but there is no disagreement over our last place showing on a list of median incomes.Believe it or not, Mississippi also has the highest sales tax on food in America. In fact, Mississippi is one of only seven states that ta

      A Chill on the Mississippi
By Erik Hare The fall color is just beginning to dapple the Mississippi Valley here in Saint Paul. For us, it’s a last chance to get out and enjoy mild weather before the death-defying cold swirls around us. But for the people who made our city, it was a sign of the world closing in on their little pioneer village. When the Civil War broke out in 1861, Saint Paul had been settled for at least 30 years. This was the Territorial Capital from 1849 on, and been anointed the State Capitol in 1858. An amazing 10,000 people made this their home, and all the modern conveniences like theaters and stores were available. It wasn’t the frontier any longer. Still, Saint Paul was tied to the rest of America completely and totally by the Mississippi River – railroads were a decade away. The arrival of winter meant that there would be no more supplies coming into town for at least 4 months. Fall color would have been greeted by these pioneers the way we treat a yellow traffic lig

Riverboat moved to site of planned Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center in Vicksburg
If you weren't expecting it, you were in for a double or triple take if in the Vicksburg, Mississippi area yesterday. A huge riverboat, the MV Mississippi, was moved along a side street to it's new home at the future site of the Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center. Formerly a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' riverboat, rows of specialized minature wheels were used to manuever it to the new location. Decked out in fresh paint, with flags and banners for the short trip, the 218-foot riverboat will be a main attraction at the Interpretive Center. The Mississippi River Museum and Interpretive Center will highlight the history of the Corp of Engineer's efforts at controlling the mighty Mississippi. The grand opening of the Interpretive Center is planned within 2-3 years as more federal funds become available for the project. Given the size of the riverboat, it will be a

Beer and Light Wine on Ballot in Mississippi County
If you want to be able to buy beer or light wine -- whatever that is -- in Yalobusha County, Mississippi, you had better hope voters in a special election on Dec. 11th pull the "Yes" lever.Yalobusha County Board of Supervisors agreed to hold a special election on legalizing the sale of beer and light wine. The Yalobusha Progressive Organization submitted a petition with 2,312 valid signatures. Even though the petition had more than the required 20 percent of the county's registered voters, it missed the deadline for the measure to appear on the Nov. 6 general election ballot. The group trying to repeal Prohibition in the county had hoped to benefit from a higher turnout during the general election, which includes the Mississippi gubernatorial race.

Looking forward - Mississippi Gulf Coast
Recently, my in-laws visited the Gulf Coast to see firsthand what it looks like. Most of the casinos are back in operation. The piles of damage along the beach are gone. Many slabs and stairs leading to nowhere could be seen along the beach of former stately homes and businesses. Here is construction of Hwy 90 at Ocean Springs. Biloxi and especially Gulport have a long way to go to get back to the way it was before Katrina. Along Hwy 90, Edgewater Mall is in the latter stages of construction, with most stores open. The historic last home of Jefferson Davis, Beauvoir, is needing funding to rebuild. See the way it was in our previous feature on the coast. They also went to Ocean Springs, where much progress could be seen. Further west along the coast, the towns of Long Beach. Pass Christian, Waveland, and Bay St. Louis fared much worse and will take a long time to recover. We wish

Nora Jean Bruso - Going Back to Mississippi (2004)
Lényeg azonban az, hogy e karrier megkezdődött, s így most mi is gyönyörködhetünk előadásában.2004-ben megjelent Going Back to Mississippi című albumának stábja: Nora Jean Bruso - Vocals; Mark Bruso - Background vocals; Marty Binder - Drums; Ron Graham - Saxophone; Jimmie Jacobs - Guitar; Brian Lupo - Guitar; Dave Specter - Guitar; Har

They argued a bit back and forth through an open window with LisaJo Chamberlain playing instigator in the middle. Michelle is now completely upset. Saying she has washed her hands of Kristi becuase she cries all day and swears she is innocent of her crimes but then turned around and made a very odd comment for a innocent person.Michelle claims they were watching Maury where wild teen girls were forced to spend the night in prison. Kristi supposedly said "If someone had done that to me I wouldnt be here now." Hm.Im upset that Paul Bernardo hasnt written me back. I know its in Canada but still, he has had time. 35W Bridge in Minneapolis Collapses into the Mississippi River
(Scott Takushi/ Pioneer Press/ AP Photo ) At 6:05 last night a major interstate bridge in Minneapolis collapsed into the river and over the West River Parkway. Although it was during rush hour, there were only 50 vehicles or so on the bridge at the time because some lanes were closed due to construction workers repairing the road surface. There were about 20 workers on the bridge at the time of the collapse. There is a lot of conflicting information about survivors right now, but the general consensus is that 20 to 30 people are still missing, four people are confirmed dead, and more than 60 people were injured. Amazingly enough, there was a school bus of 60 children that did not end up in the water, but landed near the parkway. Several of the children were treated for injuries, but all were able to walk from the scene.Although I know many people who drive on

Wollt ihr wissen, was ich denke? Die haben geschlappt! So wie es schon oft passiert ist in Amerika. Es wird schlecht gebaut, aber wenn man genug ‚schwarz’ Geld bezahlt, bekommt man alles abgenommen. Naja, was will man tun. Hallo? Nat&u

The eight-lane Interstate 35W bridge, a major Minneapolis artery, was in the midst of being repaired and had several lanes closed when it crumbled. "There were two lanes of traffic, bumper to bumper, at the point of the collapse. Those cars did go into the river," Minneapolis Police Lt. Amelia Huffman. "At this point there is nothing to suggest that this was anything other than a structural collapse."Jamie Winegar of Houston was sitting in traffic shortly after 6 p.m. when all of a sudden she started hearing "boom, boom, boom and we were just dropping, dropping, dropping, dropping."
