But, then decide to convert your back garden into an allotment growing everything from seed. Your expenditure falls by £1,000 so National Output appears to fall, but you are still consuming the same amount of vegetables.

Huckabee Misleading About Ten Commandments in Supreme Court
Earlier I posted about Mick Huckabee’s statement about hanging the Ten Commandments in the White House as I debunked his claim that they form the basis for our laws. During the same interview Huckabee justified hanging them in the White House by saying that the Ten Commandments are in the Supreme Court. Steve Benen both linked to my earlier post here and gave some important details about the Ten Commandments hanging in the Supreme Court. Steve noted that “there's a frieze just below the ceiling in the court's main chamber that depicts the evolution of the law over the past several centuries. As part of the decorative horizontal band, there's a depiction of Moses cradling two tablets, which is obviously meant to represent the Ten Commandments.” Moses is only one small part of the frieze: Also included are Confucius, Mohammad, the Old Testament's Solomon and Hammurabi, founder of the ancient Babylonian Empire. News: Carphone misleading over iPhone
Staff at the UK's biggest mobile phone retailer, Carphone Warehouse, have been caught misleading customers about Apple's popular iPhone handset. Undercover researchers from BBC One's Watchdog found staff made false claims about what would happen if a phone was stolen and hadn't been insured. This was in the hope customers would take out the store's own insurance. The firm said there could be "some element of confusion among an isolated number of sales consultants". But Carphone Warehouse added it did not believe that the "small number of complaints" were "a fair reflection of the experience of thousands of iPhone customers who have received insurance advice in our stores". The findings come just a year after Carphone Warehouse was fined £245,000 by the Financial Services Authority for breaking the rules on selling insurance. Commission Viewers complained to Watchdog that they'd been told if they lost their iPhone, they'd have to buy an e

      Beware of Misleading Omega-3 Claims
Omega-3 claims are popping up in everything from cereal to mayonnaise, but are those foods the panacea that marketers would have you believe? According to the cover story in the October issue of Nutrition Action Healthletter, certain omega-3s may reduce the risk of heart disease and might even help protect against cancer, Alzheimer’s, and vision problems. But many foods making claims have little or none of those omega-3s, and labels don’t have to reveal how much or which omega-3 fat the foods contain. DHA and EPA, the omega-3s found in salmon, trout, other fish, and algae, are linked to a lower risk of heart disease. Another omega-3, ALA, found in flaxseed and to a lesser extent, canola and soy, may not have the same benefits. But that doesn’t stop companies from loading products with ALA and bragging about their omega-3 content. Center for Science in the Public Interest October 1, 2007

Still, as misleading movie titles go, 300 is pretty tame. Misleading War Debate Oversimplifies the Reality?
In opinionated fashion, the USA Today opinion piece on the war in Iraq “report card” makes a good point: “The interim assessment, which Bush delivered Thursday, was revealing less for its content than for what it reflected about the dangerously simplistic nature of the Washington debate about Iraq. Bush latched on to the tentative progress on reducing violence to portray the glass as half full, urging more time to achieve victory and painting dire consequences for a withdrawal. Many Democrats, on the other hand, seized on the failure of the Iraqi government to achieve the benchmarks set for it. They pressed for a quick withdrawal, with little apparent concern for the consequences. The options just aren't so simple, and pretending that they are is particularly troubling because shallow thinking is what has turned Iraq into such an intractable mess.” So far so good, although in my opinion I question what is so bad about “half full” vs. “half empty” as a positive vi

      Is David Bach’s Math Misleading?
I was reading David Bach’s book “The Automatic Millionaire” on the flight back home from our Philly/NY trip - except for some little excitement (for the wrong reasons) while reading his views on real estate, the book almost put me to sleep (sorry Bach fans). May be it’s not Bach’s fault here - there is a lot of stuff on personal finance (by various authors) that make me yawn with increasing frequency after a dozen pages or so. Anyways, back to the point of interest. In one particular section in the book (titled “Six Reasons Why Homes Make Great Investments“), Bach starts painting a very rosy picture of investing in real estate. While some of the reasons are OK, I was not comfortable with the manner in which a couple of them were explained. For example, in reason #2, he starts with explaining the concept of leverage and then jumps to calculating returns on investment. Here, he tries to show how real estate investment can yield handsome returns

Another Misinformed,Misleading Article about Cuba HealthCare System: Why is Cuba exporting its health care miracle to the world's poor?
Cuba's health care system is based on the neighbourhood doctors and nurse. Most often, one of them lives upstairs from the office. Photo by Sarah van Gelder. Cubans say they offer health care to the world’s poor because they have big hearts. But what do they get in return? They live longer than almost anyone in Latin America. Far fewer babies die. Almost everyone has been vaccinated, and such scourges of the poor as parasites, TB, malaria, even HIV/AIDS are rare or non-existent. Anyone can see a doctor, at low cost, right in the neighborhood. The Cuban health care system is producing a population that is as healthy as those of the world’s wealthiest countries at a fraction of the cost. And now Cuba has begun exporting its system to under-served communities around the world—including the United States. The story of Cuba’s health care ambitions is largely hidden from the people of the United States, where politics left over from the Cold War maintain an embargo on information

Companies which do not comply are likely to face enforcement action by the OFT. It will be interesting to see if all travel firms will toe the line or if it will take some hefty fines to ensure compliance.   I still think that there is an issue with supposedly optional costs on package holidays such as inflight meals and resort transfers as I thought that was the whole idea of a package holiday that it included all compenents of the holiday.

      100 Million IE7 Downloads Misleading
Microsoft has reported that they’ve had over 100 million downloads of the new Internet Explorer 7 browser. WebSideStory, the company Microsoft uses for measuring browser usage, is reporting that just over 25% of people are using IE7, second only to IE6. While I don’t doubt the numbers, I have serious doubts over what these numbers say. Just because 100 million downloads have been registered, are there really 100 million people using IE7? How many of these downloads (and how many subsequent users) of IE7 were forced on the users through Windows Update? How many were voluntary? How many of these downloads are only being used for testing website compatibility? Firefox usage (note: not downloads, usage) is at approximately 14%[ref] and still slowly climbing. To me, that says a lot more than Firefox having whatever number of downloads. It tells me that the stories of people asking friends to “fix the internet” after seeing what IE7 looks like (and my personal
