SWB Yankees(AAA) PreviewThe Yankees AAA team at Scranton/Wilkes-Barre opens its season Thursday night at home against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies). A lot of new faces are on this year’s team and they have a very good pitching staff that should help them defend their Division Championship from last year. Here's a brief preview of some of the players:STARTING PITCHERSThis is the team’s strongpoint. The pitching here at SWB could be better than some ML teams.Steven White: White's a holdover from last year’s rotation. White had a very good ERA in 07 --3.34. He throws hard and worked out of the pen in the fall league. He's going to start the year in the rotation but he's perfect material for the long-man, spot starter role and could be moved to the pen easily at some point.Ke

It's the midway point of spring training so I thought I'd take a look at how some of the minor leaguers are doing at spring training. Some of the younger kids have already been sent over to the minor league camp across the street from Legends Field.POSITION PLAYERS: Brett Gardner: Gardner has been very good so far and is currently hitting .435. He's thrown out 2 runners at the plate and has stolen 6 bases in the process. He’s also walked 4 times and driven in 3. If he doesn't make the team he'll be starting at SWB in center, but with Joe Girardi’s recent comments, there is a chance you may he could make the roster as a 5th outfielder. Justin Christian: He has been pretty good thus far hitting .250 with a HR and 4 RBI, and 2 stolen bases so far at camp. He'll be in the SWB ou
...Here is a great article from Joel Sherman at the NY Post. The article takes a closer look into the Mets depleted farm system and the lack of a safety net for the 2008 season. Sherman had this to say:The Mets are out on a dangerous high wire. They have a 25-man roster that could - and maybe should - win the NL pennant. Nevertheless, that roster is proving brittle so far this spring, raising the likelihood the Mets will need their farm system to provide reinforcements through either promotions or in trades.CLICK HERE FOR THE ARTICLE
I have to admit that I am set in my ways when it comes to certain things. One of them is sports. I not only love to play sports but for a few select sports, being a spectator is also a lot of fun.
Growing up and traveling have enabled me to enjoy watching top level professional sports. NHL, NFL, MLB, even soccer (pre-MLS) have given me a lot of enjoyment. However, the top leagues share one thing - the tickets are expensive.
Minor league sports on the other hand are much less expensive. That is where my enjoyment of sports hits the budget. With the cost being so much lower, I always want to be at the games. This means that I am - and have been - a season ticket holder in one form or another for a combined 10 seasons or more. Different sports, different cities, different situations.
At $1400 a year for 2 seats to the local hockey team (Go Idaho Steelheads), plus downtown parking and playoffs it does add up. So it is definitely not on my list of most frugal decisions ev

Well, Roger Clemens is making another minor league start, but instead of facing Scranton or Portland, Maine, he'll face Adam LaRoche, Ronny Paulino, and the big bats of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Saturday night. Clemens, scheduled to pitch against the White Sox on Monday, was scratched because of a fatigued right groin, pushing his next start to Saturday night.Still more attractive than a LaRoche bobblehead. Which, ironically, was sponsored by LaRoche College. Bet they wish they could take that one back. His bad luck is the Pirates' gain, as the much-ballyhooed comeback will probably give the Pirates their first nationally televised game since Sid Bream crossed home for Atlanta in 1992 (I'm exaggerating, but you get the point). Never before has one groin meant so much to the Pirates organization. In order to fully prepare ourselves for this monumental matchup, here's the official "Yankees vs. Pirates Tale of the Tape":Records:Yankees 23-30, .426 Pirates 24-32, .429Advantage: Pirates.
Red Sox RHP Curt Schilling threw 98 pitches over six solid innings in a game featuring mostly Triple-A players at Boston's minor league complex on Sunday. Schilling mixed all his pitches and hopes his next start will prove to manager Terry Francona that he's prepared to go deep into the game during Boston's season opener at Kansas City on April 2. "I don't want to be on a pitch count," he said. "I know I'm 40, but I don't think the ace of the staff should be on a pitch count." Schilling gave up one run - a homer by highly touted Reds prospect Jay Bruce - and four hits. The right-hander struck out six and didn't walk a batter in front of general manager Theo Epstein and about 100 others, many of them young Red Sox prospects. Schilling, who pitched to regular catcher Jason Varitek, said he expects to reach 100 pitches in his next start. "I felt strong," Schilling said. "The only thing that was wrong was my fastball command. I thought I had a lot of life at the end." Schilling is
