Minnesota's GOP Congressional Hope is For Status Quo
by Dave MindemanWhen assessing your prospects for a November election, you probably don't want the words "shellshocked" or "real disaster" to be bantied about, but that is exactly the phrasing being used by the leadership of the Republican Congressional caucus.Minority Leader Boehner and NRCC Committee Chairman Tom Cole had nothing but dire assessments to give their colleagues. As one member put it:“There is an attitude that, ‘I better watch out for myself, because nobody else is going to do it,’” the member said. “There are all these different factions out there, everyone is sniping at each other, and we have no real plan. We have a lot of people fighting to be the captain of the lifeboat instead of everybody pulling together.”The recent special election lo

Minnesota AG files suit against 6 foreclosure rescue 'consultants"
The following press release the Minnesota Attorney General, Lori Swanson, announced the filing of six new lawsuits in Hennepin County District Court against foreclosure consulting companies that charged Minnesota homeowners up to $2,375 to save their homes but failed to provide promised assistance that would help them retain home ownership. “We do not tolerate mortgage foreclosure consultants taking advantage of struggling homeowners who are already between a rock and a hard place in the worsening mortgage meltdown,” Swanson said. The lawsuits filed today are against: (1) National Foreclosure Relief, Inc., a Nevada corporation with a California business address; (2) Lewis Loss Mitigation, Inc. of Alabama, which also does business as Stop Foreclosure Center and Lewis and Associa

Minnesota Budget Talks: Not Pretty But Still Progress
by Dave MindemanMinnesota budget talks are getting closer but with more complicated issues. Rachel Stassen-Berger at The Political Animal has been camped out at the Capitol most of the weekend. She reports on the progress...some things good, some things not so good.Pawlenty and the Republicans seem to be withdrawing all bonding offers from the table. That might put the Central Corridor Line on the scrap heap. But they also may be leaving the Health Care Access fund out of the negotiation and that may keep some reforms possible. Although the general cuts needed may cut deeper into health care anyway.Tax changes on foreign corporations and tapping the budget reserves will probably contribute about half of the need to fix the deficit. I still hope the Central Corridor comes back....mayb

      Some Minnesota Political HodgePodge
by Dave MindemanPolitical HodgePodgeMinnesota Budget: When it comes to the budget, Pawlenty likes caps. Cap on property taxes.... cap on state portion of the Central Corridor. It's a good way to pass the buck. A property tax cap would tie the hands of local government officials and make them do the hard math (instead of the Governor). Cap on Central Corridor would force local units to come up with more of the additional costs, which would be the result of the furthur delays caused by Pawlenty's original veto. It would also absolve the state from any responsible and accountable position. Steve Sarvi: Steve Sarvi will probably be endorsed as the DFL opponent to John Kline. Still no evidence that he can compete with Kline on the money front. Without that evidence he won't get any DCC

Minnesota Twins: Ranking 26th In Our Hearts
by Dave MindemanHere is a cute little ranking survey for major league baseball teams. It titles it as MLB Ballpark Rankings but the categories include Fan IQ, Hospitality, and Promotions. So really it is more of a total franchise ranking. Now the rankings are determined this way:They are based solely on results taken from an online survey of baseball fans in March, when we asked readers to rate their hometown ballpark in 10 categories. As a group, these fans know of what they speak: Nearly 15 percent of the responses came from season-ticket holders, and more than half of all the responses came from fans who attend at least five games per season. So, essentially, fans are rating their own team. Minnesota fans rated the Twins at 26 out of the 30 teams. Looking at some of the individual c

Minnesota Gas Prices: My 2 Cents Worth
By Dave MindemanHere is my 2 cents worth on gas prices... and I hope Marty Seifert is paying close attention. This is not 10 cents worth or 20 cents worth or even 31 cents worth....just 2 cents. If you look at this chart of the average Minnesota retail gas price, you can see a pretty steady upward climb from April 1st to the present. Now, unless I am completely mistaken, the April 1st gas tax increase was 2 cents. That's 2 pennies....2 hundreths of one dollar... a couple of Lincoln copperheads.Yet, the House GOP caucus will knowingly put out an ad blaming gas prices on the Transportation Bill tax increase -- 2 cents. At the risk of furthur complicating GOP math, I think there are other numbers that are much more relevant. How about $18 billion?Lawmakers are expected to focus their question

It describes the efforts of several individuals who have recently appeared before the State Board of Pardons - which is composed of Gov. Tim Pawlenty (R), Attorney General Lori Swanson and Chief Justice Russell Anderson form the state Board of Pardons. For example, eighty-year-old Emilia Acosta appeared before the Board to explain why she shot and killed her husband back in 1971. The article reports Acosta finished her sentence "long ago" and was asking the State to "forgive her" and wipe her "slate clean." Here is a snippet:Like Acosta, most people who come before the board have finished their prison or jail terms decades ago and seek what is known as a "pardon extraordinary.'' Minnesota Ghost
This happened about a month ago just outside of Willmar, a little town in the back country of Minnesota, and while it sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock tale, it's real. This out-of-state traveler was on the side of the road, hitchhiking on a real dark night in the middle of a thunderstorm. Time passed slowly and no cars went by. It was raining so hard he could hardly see his hand in front of his face. Suddenly he saw a car moving slowly, approaching and appearing ghostlike in the rain. It slowly and silently crept toward him and stopped.Wanting a ride real bad the guy jumped in the car and closed the door; only then did he realize that there was nobody behind the wheel, and no sound of an engine to be heard over the rain.Again the car crept slowly forward and the guy was terrified, too scared

And the ACLU didn't bother until a Minneapolis columnist exposed the madrassa earlier this week."It appears the school may be impermissibly blurring the line between providing a secular education and endorsing and promoting religion and religious activities," said Charles Samuelson, who heads the group's Minnesota office.Blurring the line? Minnesota Wild @ Edmonton Oilers - NHL

Minnesota State Fair: il mondo "on a stick"

Court Approves Consent Decree Between Minnesota AG and News America Marketing
Last week, the U.S. District Court in Minnesota approved a consent decree entered into between the Minnesota Attorney General and News America Marketing. The Minnesota AG had intervened in the ongoing lawsuit between Insignia Systems and News America in December 2006, alleging that News America had engaged in deceptive trade practices. I previously discussed the lawsuit here. Under the terms of the consent decree, the State agreed to release its claims without an admission of liability from News America. In return, News America agreed that it would not make any further representation to any CPG or other customer regarding Insignia's compliance rate through December 31, 2003, falsely disparage its competitors, or violate the Minnesota Deceptive Trade Practices Act, Section 325D.44. University of Minnesota Developing Cyanide Antidote
University of Minnesota researchers are developing a fast-acting antidote to the deadly poison cyanide. The scientists say their treatment is effective on mice. They hope to start human trials within three years. The body already is able to detoxify the small amounts of cyanide that occur naturally in pitted fruits and other foods. Researcher Steven Patterson says the new antidote works with the body's natural protections.Concerns over the potential use of cyanide as a chemical weapon by terrorists led to the federal funding of the research. But firefighters might benefit most of all from the antidote because building fires produce large amount of the poison.Researchers hope their antidote becomes part of a standard kit given to first responders.Source:

      Minnesota Not So Nice
This was quite a surprise to walk into after a long plane ride. Apparently, my son who is almost 21 only washed what he absolutely needed during the 5 months we have been gone. His entire wardrobe is in this pile, excluding what he was wearing this day. His closet was a sea of empty plastic hangers. In case you were wondering, no we didn't surprise him with our visit, he was aware of our itinerary for about three months. We had quite the talk with him and are cautiously optimistic this won't happen again. (Yeah, right) It took two and a half days to get it all washed and dried. Oh, it's so good to have a dryer again. Curt (hubby) with our grandson, Noah. No stuffing there Noah! Another picture of Noah with Grandpa. I must say that I have strange interactions with Americans now too. Here are two since we have arrived home:1. I was entering our bank about the same time as an elderly woman leaning heavily on her cane. I held the door open for her and she gave me a dirty lo
