Miles Davis was born on May 26, 1926. He grew up in a well-to-do family in East St. Louis. His father was a dentist. The family lived on a ranch and they had horses. (How lucky is that! All I ever wanted as a little girl was a pony.)
He started playing trumpet when he [...]

A lot of you young heads might not comprehend, appreciate, or must less even respect this. But truth be told, Jazz had signficant influence on the sculpting and emergence of modern hip-hop we listen to on a daily basis. Just think about it, what is the premise of Jazz? Improvisation, remind you of something? Yea, that little thing we call a freestyle. ‘Freedom Jazz Dance’ is a track off of the “Evolution of the Groove Remix EP” out next week (tuesday, August 21st) released by Legacy Recordings, so head over to their website to purchase…

I am not a jazz expert. I can't tell you who played what instrument on what recording or argue the nuances of different jazz styles, but I do like jazz so I thought I'd start with two of the greats - Miles Davis and John Coltrane playing So What:One of my first jazz albums (like a lot of people) was Kind of Blue my Davis, and I liked it right from the start. If you are at all interested in jazz, this is the best place to start. One of my other early albums was Giant Steps by Coltrane. It took me longer to "get" this album, but now it is another one of my favorites. From there I just picked up something here and there based on recommendations and realized the world of jazz music is HUGE! I thought collecting Rocket from the Crypt singles was tough, jazz is damn near impossible unless you got money to burn. I've been on a big Cannonball Adderley kick lately and will probably have a post all about him soon - because you know you're cool if you can play with Kwai Chang Caine:

“He has become a great improviser, the Miles Davis of the war.”Edward Wong – NY Times.com In a vacuum, power is something so many and too many with different ideas about how something should be; fight for. Moktada al-sadr is one of those people. Where he is interested in an Iraq without outside involvement, he realizes the best bet for this scenario is to wait on the American efforts in Iraq to come to a somewhat stabilizing fruition. Like our Democrat leadership, although much less interested in an American defeat, a senior Iraqi official said of al-sadr: “Mr. Sadr’s thinking was in constant evolution, groping for a workable strategy for the war.” From the NY Times: “Perhaps nothing is more surprising than the fact that Mr. Sadr’s attitude toward the Americans actually reflects a degree of ambivalence.” “Anti-Americanism is the basis of his unflagging popularity. More than any other Iraqi politician, he is willing to recognize, validate and capitalize
Thought by many to be the most revolutionary album in jazz history, having virtually created the genre known as jazz-rock fusion (for better or worse) and being the jazz album to most influence rock and funk musicians, Bitches Brew is, by its very nature, mercurial. The original double LP included only six cuts and featured up to 12 musicians at any given time, most of whom would go on to be
