Migrating from PHP4 domxml to PHP5 dom
After migrating my servers entirely over to PHP5, my SurfHandsFree site stopped working properly.  The problem was that it uses the domxml_open_file function which is a PHP4 function and isn’t supported in PHP5. PHP5 instead uses the dom extension instead which has more features but isn’t backwards compatible with domxml. Instead of changing all of my code [...]

Nobody ever got fired for ... migrating from Windows?
When I was cutting my teeth in the IT industry, they used to say, "No one ever got fired for buying IBM." After a decade or so, that was usually paraphrased as, "No one ever got fired for buying Windows." And I'm sure that's still a pretty true statement, as far as the sentiment goes.-----But I've been telling people for a few years now that by the end of 2007 (just a stab at a round date), people might not be flocking to the MacOS in droves -- but that something cataclysmic would occur that would make Windows lose it's most-favored-OS status and enterprise-level customers would begin to put their trust (that's a lower-case 't'; because if it wasn't I'd have to pay Uncle Bill a licensing fee) in something else (be it Linux, MacOS, something altogether new, or all of the above.Well, nothi

The Invasion of Migrating Overseas Workers
If you are anywhere in the world, chances are you will always have the same mentality of finding better fortune working abroad rather than locally. A lot has to do with currency and of course the current economic situation of a country. However, looking also at the cost of living in the area of interest may be a good thing to ponder upon. You can earn double or triple your standard pay from countries like the US and Europe. However, you have to consider the basic needs such as clothing, food and housing. They are not the same with the rate you have in your homeland. You have to satisfy these needs as well if you are going to work effectively and stay in the territory and these will certainly vary. So why do people get better fortune elsewhere? Well for one thing, sacrifice is still imminent. People give up social satisfaction and their vices to earn and send money to their loved ones back home. They will be lonely at times but the price to pay for higher pay will always require somet

Migrating Existing Windows Installations to VirtualBox
Windows installations, unlike Linux, cannot easily be moved from one hardware to another. This is not just due to Microsoft's activation mechanism but the fact that the installed kernel and drivers depend on the actual hardware. This article explains the common pitfalls and how to workaround these. We assume that either a physical Windows installation or a VMware image is the source of migration. It is also assumed that a suitable virtual disk image (either VDI or VMDK for VirtualBox >= 1.4) is already present.HALThe hardware dependent portion of the Windows kernel is dubbed Hardware Abstraction Layer (HAL). While hardware vendor specific HALs have become very rare, there are still a number of HALs shipped by Microsoft. Here are the most common HALs (for more information, refer to this article:Hal.dll (Standard PC)Halacpi.dll (ACPI HAL)Halaacpi.dll (ACPI HAL with IO APIC) If you perform a Windows installation with default settings in VirtualBox, Halacpi.dll will be chosen as VirtualBox

Migrating from (gs) to (dv) Dedicated Server
I have outgrown my shared grid-server hosting with mediatemple. Over the next few days, I will be migrating over to a dedicated virtual (dv) base server with the follow specs: 256 MB Dedicated RAM 20 GB Disk Storage 1 TB Network Transfer Plesk 8.2 Control Panel ($30/month value) The cost is $50 a month but with the mediatemple referral program, I am only paying $20 a month for a dedicated virtual server! Although downtime should be nonexistent, you may be reaching the site on the old server. Please be patient while DNS propagates across the Internet! I’m looking forward to using the Plesk 8.2 control panel which is probably the most powerful control panel for hosting — that is, managing your own web hosting business. Keep an eye out for a full review of the (dv) server as well as Plesk.

Migrating to a new Mac - say hello to a Mac Switcher
Other than needing to install keyboard and mouse drivers for my (gasp) Microsoft keyboard and mouse, I have yet to find anything that doesn’t just work. I’d like to accuse all you long-time Mac types of keeping this secret from Windows users, but the truth is that you have been telling us, and we haven’t wanted to hear it. My biggest fear when getting my first Mac was that I didn’t want to become an elitist Mac snob - they drove me crazy. But now I realize it’s not their fault; when your computing platform is so noticeably better than Windows, it’s hard not to get a bit full of yourself. Read the full post on TUAW.

Migrating to Veesta, not much works
My XP machine is creaking a lot these days so I have been thinking about putting my life in my hands and considering moving all my essential apps to Veesta and starting over with the XP machine. My usual way of doing this is to install all of the essential apps on the new machine and once I know they work OK removing them from the old machine and seeing what’s left. A lot of dross usually. I tried doing this with a few apps yesterday and setup Outlook 2003 on Vista OK as well as Deep Log Analyzer which reads blog log files. DLA installed OK and I pointed it at the log files that the XP DLA looks at (I’ve got a sinking feeling about this. Ed). With both machines running DLA and both up to date having both just imported the log files and displaying the same days data the Veesta DLA actually showed a greater number of unique site visitors, about 5% more. Change subject immediately. Removed Dreamweaver, SQL Server, Visual Studio Express, Microsoft Expression and a couple of oth

Hawaii's otters have been migrating apparently....
Over the weekend there were roughly 200 small earthquakes down at the volcano park and they closed Chain of Craters road and other roads around the park. The lava flow has been real active the last couple of months and they suspect magma is migrating beneath the volcano.... however they could be incorrect according to this video published by Dr. Tiki.... (warning - may contain alcohol, off color language and immature subject matter)...I stumbled on Tikibartv.com a couple weeks back and it's sort of a kick. It's a story of a group of thirty-somethings who hang out at a tiki bar and solve their troubles through alcoholic tiki beverages. It apparently started as a single episode joke by a scriptwriter who was poking fun at the fact he had a tiki bar in the corner of his living room. I saw an article yesterday which said it's become one of the most popular podcasts out there and it's now almost a full time job and has created interest in his other works he previously couldn't sell

      Sudan’s migrating wildlife wows scientists
Conservationists surprised to find species thriving after civil warBy Andrea ThompsonUpdated: 2:57 p.m. ET June 12, 2007NEW YORK - More than a million animals — including elephants, buffaloes, ostriches, lions, giraffes and a rare type of stork — have been unexpectedly seen living and migrating across Southern Sudan, where no surveys of wildlife had been conducted for the past 25 years due to civil war in the region.Decades of war wrought significant damage to the region, along with excessive hunting, desertification of the land and periodic droughts, so wildlife numbers were declining in the stricken country. Based on observations in other war-torn nations, conservationists thought the wildlife in Southern Sudan would be wiped out, but it wasn't.REST OF THE STORY AT MSNBC!!!!Go Check out this story.. The photos are very good and the story is very well written.Huntinglife.com is a project I am taking on to create a resource to match outfitters and hunters together along with infor

      Migrating Entries from Opendiary
Over the next few days, I intend to migrate old entries from my journal at Opendiary under the name De Redyns. This will greatly increase my content on this blog and help to make posts while I am going through a transition that has been making it difficult to post regularly. In light of this, I am creating a new sub-category under “Ed’s Articles” that is named “OpenDiary Posts“. Since these entries will have their timestamps modified to match their original posting date on OpenDiary, they won’t show up at the top of my posts on my main page. To access these entries you can click on the “OpenDiary Posts” link on the sidebar. A few of these entries may not be quite up to the high standards you have come to expect from the Flada Blog, but all of them will be at least a small adventure into the workings of my mind. Ultimately, I will migrate older posts from my previous OpenDiary journal under the name Parthian Tactic, but I’ve de

Migrating all data to Vista, does it work?
I wonder if peoples reticence in migrating to Vista, or even just getting a new PC running XP, is because they have accumulated so much data on their old PC that they’re worried about how to get that onto a new PC. They’ve probably got a choc-a-block PC full of all their Word docs, spreadsheets, emails, pictures, music files, movie files, Internet Explorer links and game settings and that stuff is important to them and they don’t want to lose any of it. They’ve also probably got a bit of a nagging feeling at the back of their mind on what’s going to happen if their old PC fatally crashes. Backing up data under XP I suppose the first issue here is that backing up data is such a pain. Many of us know that we don’t need to backup everything, only user generated data. Now that might make sense to you and me but to a lot of users it isn’t necessarily so. All they want to know is that if something goes wrong that they can get back to base c

      Migrating!
My blogs migrated to New Blogger (it should not be called beta anymore I think...). The migration was very easy (I owned a google account) except the fact that I had to customize my sidebar again because all of the HTML code I have added to my template (buttons, links, hit counter etc) was gone... Although the customisation of the template in New Blogger is very easy, you click the "Add HTML/Javascript" button, you enter the code in the popup window and that's it. You do not have to manually align buttons, counters and links or looking through the entire template to decide where to enter the HTML code so it appears exactly where you want the item to appear. The WYSIWYG (What you see is what you get) editing environment is much more usefull. If you decide to switch to new blogger, do not forget to enter again yout META tags in head section.
