This non-drug treatment is called EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) and, through clinical applications, has provided an effectiveness rate of over 80%.In essence, EFT is an emotional version of acupuncture except needles are not necessary. Instead, gentle fingertip tapping on precise meridian energy points allow the body's subtle energies (or Qi, as it is called in Chinese medicine) to flow unimpeded. This has proven repeatedly to provide relief from a wide variety of pains, including migraine headaches. An estimated 303 million worldwide experience recurring migraine headaches. At any one time migraines are incapacitating 20 million people, interfering with their productivi

So severe is their migraine pain that some people are now to be offered a new electrical solution. The new device is an electrical stimulator that can be operated by a remote control. Clinical trials have suggested that it can ease pain as well as reducing nausea, sickness and sensitivity to light and sound. The device consists of a rechargeable generator which is inserted just under the skin in the neck, back or chest. Electrodes are attached to nerves at the back of the neck that supply feeling to the back half of the head. When switched on by the migraine sufferer with a small hand held remote control pulsed electrical signals stimulate tightened nerves. The intensity of the signals can be turned up or down as needed. A slight tingling feeling may be felt around the area of the implant.Wi

Nonpharmacologic therapy includes identification and avoidance of triggers for headaches, adequate sleep, and regular aerobic exercise. Biofeedback and stress reduction techniques may also be useful.
Triggers or Risk Factors for Migraine
Pharmacologic therapy for migraine is divided into acute and preventive therapies. Acute therapy is initiated at the onset of or during an attack to relieve headache pain. Preventive therapy consists of the daily use of a medication to reduce the frequency of attacks. Such therapy should be considered when attacks occur more frequently than two times per month or when attacks are severe.

Headache migraineHeadache is a very common ailment. Associated with many illnesses, it occurs without specific cause as well. Most headaches arise in tissues outside the skull. Headache is only a symptom. It can occur with the common cold, flu, sinus trouble, toothache, allergies, hay fever and other nose and eye diseases, and menstrual irregularities, to name a few. There are several kinds of headache which can be classified according to location of pain and accompanying symptoms. One type of headache is generally found in the front part of the forehead and is of an acute nature, that is, it comes on quickly and occurs with other symptoms such as runny or stuffy nose and swollen eyes.Another type of headache is migraine. It arises from irregular changes (dilation and constriction) in blood vessels in the scalp, temple, and face. It is usually one-sided, sudden, and very intense. Many times visual disturbances such as blank spaces before the eyes and blurred vision are present. Dizzine
When a migraine strikes, many will head for home and settle in to wait out the excruciating headache. This may be the problem. While current genetic studies of rare migraines types show the condition to be about sixty percent inherited, the other forty is environmental.
How can migraineurs make sure their homes aren’t giving them headaches? Clear out known offenders, one at a time. Here are some things to look out for:
* Common household allergens, things like mold, mildew, and dust and dust mites. Check your ceiling fans, air cons, bedding, ceiling light, pillow..etc. Changing the air filter and switching to cotton sheets both help with these household horrors.
* Tobacco smoke. Whether itís a cigarette or a pipe, ask smokers to take it outside.
* Carbon monoxide. This odorless, colorless, and poisonous gas can come from poorly ventilated fireplaces, furnaces, gas appliances, or cars running in the garage. Installing carbon monoxide detectors near possible carbon monoxi

One particularly rare type of migraine is the hemiplegic migraine.Hemiplegic migraines are migraine headaches with very particular symptoms. By: Darrell MillerA new clinical trial published in the journal Headache stated that a proprietary extract of butterbur root, an herbal remedy from Europe, has been able to successfully lower the occurrence of migraines in children and adolescents. Three to seven percent of all children experience migraines. Since most migraine therapies are not effective when given to children, it is a necessity for further research on new promising therapies that can help to prevent migraines in children. Although there have been numerous studies testing therapies for adults with migraines, there have only been a few controlled trials investigating the prophylactic treatment of migraines in children and adolescents.Butterbur, which is a native European plant, has most successfully been used for its ability to relieve pain and spasms in conditions such as migraines, asthma, urinary tract spasms, and lower back pain. This trial, which took place in Germany, was an open-label study, as getting approval
An anticonvulsant drug used routinely for migraines and seizures may help alcoholics taper off their alcohol addictions without having to go through detoxification. A recent study published in Wednesday’s journal of the American Medical Association, has shown that the drug Topamax helped 15 percent of alcoholics at the height of their drinking binges stop drinking altogether for 7 weeks.
The rest of the group, given the anticonvulsant drug cut their drinking in roughly half of what it had been prior to the study. All participants were encouraged to stop drinking altogether. The 14-week trial is good news for some candidates with alcohol addictions as they may opt to be treated by their family doctor, while in their own community rather than leaving jobs and family for a trip to a rehab facility.
I can’t explain how much I hate migraines. I’ve suffered through them since I was a child and know pretty much how bad a migraine is going to be early on. Some just feel different. Yesterday was one of them. I made it through the workday - not sure how, but I did. When I made it home I thought I was going to die. Of course I wasn’t going to. It turned into one of those excruciating episodes where you wish you could go to emergency and tell them make me better - but again, its a migraine, the meds I have eventually work. I’ve been to emerg for migraines before and I knew this wasn’t going to be that bad.
And ranking right up there, with the extreme pain, sensitivity to light, sound, smells, nausea, mind bending pressure on the temples and rather bizarre light show is people who say

A little background.... I had my first migraine in 2000. I have no idea what triggered it but I do know that they have gotten progressively worse since that time. Mostly they come with my period but they also come with stress. What I plan to do with this blog is memorialize what I have been through, what I am trying and how it is working. I want to share some of the research I have done through the web and through books, because quite honestly a lot of it is redundant and completely useless. I will keep this one short and add my history later (with experiences, etc). This first one is only meant to be the appetizer. It was only within the last 2 years I have been seeking out what causes these devilish occurrences and how I can stop them. I have tried chiropractic treatment because the migrai

Studies have concluded that estrogen withdrawal is a key factor in migraines related to menstrual cycles. Twenty-five to thirty percent of all women in their 30s experience at least an occasional migraine. Menstrual migraines generally last longer than non-menstrual migraines and often are much more difficult to treat effectively. Sixty to seventy percent of women who suffer from migraines have menstrual-related migraine. Ten to fourteen percent of women with migraines have them only during menstruation. These types of headaches are known as ‘true menstrual migraine’. Premenstrual migraine may in fact be part premenstrual syndrome (PMS), the menstrual related mood disorder. Symptoms of PMS include fatigue, irritability or depression, bloating and, yes, headache.Two-thirds of women who suffered from pre-menopausal migraines find their condition improve with physiologic menopause. On the other hand, it has been found that surgical menopause worsens migraine conditions in two-th
A number of studies have been done on the relationship between magnesium deficiency and migraine. Some excerpts from Medline abstracts are listed below:Mauskop A, Altura BM; Role of magnesium in the pathogenesis and treatment of migrainesClin Neurosci 1998;5(1):24-7The importance of magnesium in the pathogenesis of migraine headaches is clearly established by a large number of clinical and experimental studies…However, the precise role of various effects of low magnesium levels in the development of migraines remains to be discovered. Magnesium concentration has an effect on serotonin receptors, nitric oxide synthesis and release, NMDA receptors, and a variety of other migraine related receptors and neurotransmitters. The available evidence suggests that up to 50% of patients during an acute migraine attack have lowered levels of ionized magnesium. Infusion of magnesium results in a rapid and sustained relief of an acute migraine in such patients. Two double-blind studies suggest tha
This information comes right from the NIH's (National Institute of Health) website. An increasing number of doctors believe that some of the most severe cases of migraines may actually be caused by an imbalance of key minerals such as magnesium and calcium. "Not all headaches are produced by this imbalance, but we now know that 50 to 60 percent of migraines are magnesium-linked. And that's probably why no prescription therapy on the market successfully treats headaches across the board. They're simply not treating the cause," says Dr. Altura. "Of the 17 people we've treated with magnesium, 13 have had complete improvement," says Herbert C. Mansmann, Jr., M.D., professor of pediatrics and associate professor of medicine at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. The magnesium-migraine link still is not commonly accepted by headache experts. In fact, Dr. Altura says that one of his magnesium studies was rejected by a prominent medical journal at the su

Fridays are usually, if not the most anticipated day of the week for students and working people. It's the last day of the week which means a halt from your books, from your computer, from the never ending meetings and away from your professors or your bosses. Friday nights can simply mean fun, fun, fun! For some, fun means going out with friends, eating out in a fancy restaurant, partying all night, and drowning ourselves with beer or hard liquors! And the next morning, what do we get from it? A big lump on our heads...headaches, and for others, it is a much more aggravated condition called migraine headaches. Migraine headache is a very painful type of headache. It is described as an intense pounding pain in one area of the head.According to a recent research, seventeen percent of women and six percent of men in the United States have experienced having migraine. Sweet Jesus please heal me of my thyroid growth which requires surgery and set me free from my migraines. Nothing is impossible in your hands Sweet Lord. Let Thy will be done Thy kingdom come.
I was on the way to my Jitterbug class this evening when I started to feel a headache come on. I didn't think too much about it, but by the time I walked into the dance studio I had started to see flashing lights out of the corner of my eye and started to feel very nauseous. Yep, a migraine. I get one about every 4 months or so. Anyway, Mrs. Pooches (the owner and boss) happened to be there today and told me to go lay down on the couch in her office. She gave me a nice comfy quilt for the chills that were starting to come on and even put a cold cloth on my head. She shut the blinds and the door to her office and left me to rest for an hour. I was awoken by something kneading my head ever so gently. I thought at first it was Gloria and mumbled 'thanks' but then I started to feel warm breath on my cheek and became alarmed. I opened my eyes and there was something furry about an inch from my face! A beautiful long haired kitten licked my cheek with it's little sandpaper t

Migraines can be incredibly painful and debilitating, but there are many natural treatment options out there. These should always be considered first, as drugs to treat migraines can actually make the problem worse. One tip is to stimulate your body to release endorphins that will naturally help to stop the pain. You can do this by compressing a nerve that’s near the top of your eye socket, or even by mixing some cayenne pepper in a glass of water and drinking it.Using the Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), a type of psychological acupressure, is also a remarkably effective tool to relieve the pain of migraines. Meanwhile, most migraines seem to have a food-based reaction relating to wheat, dairy, sugar, or artificial preservatives or chemicals. Eliminating these foods and incorporating the principles of my nutrition plan frequently improves migraines. One final, simple tip to free yourself from migraine pain? Start an exercise program. This will improve your response to stress along
Sometime in our lives, we experience headaches that come and go and are often so severe that our daily routines are affected. Oftentimes, when these headaches occur, we also experience some form of visual changes. Then we say, “It’s probably just a migraine.”
1. What is a migraine?
Migraine is a recurrent type of headache that is severely painful and usually occurs only on one side of the head. An aura occurs right before one of these attacks. An aura could be manifested as visual flashes or spots or even ringing in the ears which is opposite of the side where the headache is about to occur. The migraine attack may also come with symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, nausea and double vision.
2. What is an optical migraine?
As opposed to a real migraine, an optical migraine also involves an aura that comes before a migraine attack, but there is the absence of pain. This is rarer than the migraine that comes with severe pain. It is also know as acephalgic migraine or visual
Migraine prevention can become obsessive for migraine sufferers. Migraine affects nearly 20% of the population and can be painfully debilitating for those of us who suffer from these attacks. Finding a prevention or cure can massively improve a migraine sufferers quality of life. At the worst case scenario migraine attacks can hit on a weekly basis and last up to 72 hours a time. At other times migraine attacks may not occur for months on end. Mild attacks can be irritating but highly intense attacks can leave the sufferer bed ridden, vomiting, nauseous, lacking appetite, and in intense pain.
It can often take years to identify that you actually do suffer from migraine. It is not until you have suffered several attacks that the truth dawns that you do suffer from recurrent migraine headaches. Some people are unlucky enough to have inherited their condition as research has found that many migraine sufferers have a family history of migraine. In this case other family members may be able

Migraine is a throbbing headache that often has other accompanying symptoms. Some of these symptoms include light sensitivity, nausea and extreme pain on one side of the head. A migraine headache can be debilitating. Doctors often prescribe drug medications; however, these may not always work and can have side effects. Many migraine sufferers resort to home remedies and herbal remedies as natural ways to relieve migraine.
Here are some migraine home remedies that you can try.
Most sufferers experience repeated migraine attacks and recognize early signs of one that is starting. When you feel the first signs of a migraine, drink a caffeinated beverage. The caffeine helps open constricted blood vessels and can shorten the duration and severity of a migraine.
A bath or shower may ease the symptoms at the beginning of a migraine. Use aromatherapy bath gels or salts to aid relaxation. Try lavender, peppermint, Melissa, bay, eucalyptus or jasmine oils which all have properties that can minimi
How To Use Imitrex
A consultation with your doctor is essential. Use Imitrex exactly as prescribed. Take a tablet as soon as you feel a migraine coming on or after the migraine has started. There is no point in taking Imitrex before a headache to ward it off as it does not work this way.
Take one complete tablet with a full glass of water. Do not take another Imitrex until at least 2 hours has elapsed even if the headache remains or goes then comes back again. Presently the guidelines are that you must not take more than 200mg in any one day. If the headache remains then see your doctor before taking any more Imitrex.
Imitrex Nasal Spray
The spray has complete instructions on usage but if in any doubt check with your doctor or pharmacist for clarification. Blow your nose initially to clear the nasal passages then do not sneeze or blow your nose directly after applying the Imitrex spray.
Should the headache remain after using the spray seek medical advice before using it a second time.
Even though optical migraines do not have any specific definition, the general belief of an optical migraine is, one that includes a vision disturbance is known as an “aura”. The auras may come with the pain of severe headache, or may not have any pain.
The migraines that come with an aura are rarer than common migraines. The common migraines do not have any aura, and they may be enervating the victim of the migraine. Normally a patient suffers from the vision disturbances that persist for 5-20 min, and seldom cause any permanent impairment to the eye. The auras may vary evidently from patient to patient, and even from headache to headache.
The appearance of an aura
The aura consorted with an optical migraine usually presents before the beginning of migraine pain. It may appear in different forms, which include blind spots, flashing light or bright colours, zigzagging lines or other geometric patterns. It can also include “floaters”, which are very small objects

Massage, a common method of relieving migraine headaches, can be done by a professional – or you can do it yourself using this technique.
A light massage combined with migraine pressure points will give you the greatest relief. You need only a few simple points about how to massage a migraine headache.
Migraine Pressure Point Defined
It is important to learn the migraine pressure point or points that bring relief. A migraine pressure point is a point on your body that, when pressed, will lessen the pain in your head. Surprisingly, a migraine pressure point is not necessarily the point that hurts most.
A migraine pressure point may be pressed and released in slow, rhythmical fashion, and deliberately massaged to gain relief. This will release congested energy and blood from the head and ease your pain.
Migraine Pressure Point Technique
You will be treating each migraine pressure point with these simple steps.

Most people think of a migraine as excruciating pain, but pain is actually the third step of a migraine episode. Before the pain, a majority of migraine sufferers experience the pre-headache phase and the aura phase.
If you have ever heard of the aura phase, you’ve probably wondered, “What does a migraine aura look like?”
Although many people speak only of the aura’s affect on the eyes, the aura is much more than that. Migraineurs (those who have migraines) and their physicians know that some or all of the following may be part of an aura.
* auditory hallucinations – you hear sounds that aren’t there * confusion in thinking – things aren’t making sense* decrease in your hearing ability * difficult finding the words you want* dizziness* increased feel and touch – or reduced feel and touch * olfactory hallucinations – you smell odors that aren’t there * partial paralysis* sight loss – partial or blurry

Migraine headaches (sometimes called chronic headaches) are moderate to severe recurrent headaches, often occurring on one side of the head, which may last from a few hours to several days. It is estimated that about 6% of men and 18% of women sufferer from migraines in the U.S.
Characteristics of chronic headaches The pain of migraine headaches is throbbing or pounding in nature and usually occurs on one side of the head during a particular attack, though it usually changes sides with subsequent attacks. A headache that always occurs on the same side of the head suggests that there may be another cause for the headache other than migraine. Attacks may also involve both sides of the head and are usually worsened by day to day activities.
Other symptoms that may be associated with migraines include:
nausea
vomiting
diarrhea
cold hands and feet
pallor of the face
sensitivity to light and sound

Migraine is a common complaint affecting thousands of Americans, especially women. It presents as severe headache coupled with nausea and discomfort. The sufferer is quite unable to do any useful activity during a bout of migraine. Episodes come unannounced and for no apparent reason. Pain could subside on its own or by taking migraine medicine. Thus, it is not possible to predict onset of migraine and hence, migraine episodes interfere with his or her routine activities. Hence, those who suffer migraine usually follow certain remedies that include medication as well.
The exact cause or origin of migraine is not yet clear. Therefore, treatment strategies focus on relieving symptoms as and when they arise. Relief from migraine depends on the severity and duration of attack. For moderate intensity and short duration, one could rest lying down preferably in a dark room. If lucky to get sleep, the pain would pass on waking up. This is not however an ideal solution for
What Is The Basic Cause of a Migraine Headache? by Richard Romando
A migraine headache may attack anywhere, anytime. The headache has certain triggering causes. Many medical researches are of the opinion that Serotonin plays an important role in triggering migraines.
The Causes For a Migraine Headache Are Plenty - To Know For Sure, Check With Your Doctor
The chemical called Serotonin is responsible for migraine; besides this there are a numerous other causes for migraine headaches, such as stress, food allergies, working with bright lights, having a cold, pregnancy and many others.
Knowing the exact cause for a permanent relief from the migraine definitely takes time and numerous trials. However, temporary relief can be gained by over-the-counter medicines and/or a number of home remedies, which though simple, are often incredibly effective.
Knowing the exact cause for the migraine would definitely be beneficial for a permanent relief from this awful malady. The first step would be t
Migraine Diet
Stop Migraines With Diet Modifications by Harry B
The research is clear, food intolerance, allergies, and hypersensitivities are key triggers of headaches and migraines. Although each migraine sufferer may react to a different food or group of foods, there are a few which seem to pop up as frequent offenders: dairy, wheat, eggs, soy, corn, citrus, chocolate, coffee, beef, yeast, red wine, and processed foods with additives and preservatives.
To identify these top offenders physicians use a hypoallergenic “elimination” diet, consisting of a selection of foods that are presumably well tolerated. During their studies, patients are told to eat only the “safe” foods outlined on their version of the oligonantigenic diet in an effort to eliminate any symptoms. Once the symptoms have gone into remission, the “high risk” foods are re-introduced into the diet one at a time to assess their potential trigger effect on symptoms. This type of diet

Migraine Treatment by Harry B
Treatments for migraines range from medications to relaxation techniques, and from consuming healthy food to avoiding certain strenuous lifestyles. It remains a challenge for the medical fraternity, as doctors bounce between one treatment and another. This is largely because the intensity of migraines and their effects remains varied from one individual to another, and no single tailor-made course of action suits individual needs. Ample cases of misdiagnosis of migraine are there and individuals think it to be a psychological disorder. Those presumptions are dangerous since they may lead doctors to prescribe unnecessary, counterproductive, dangerous m
I was asked what Basilar Migraine is and here is the best explanation that I managed to find.
Basilar migraine was described by Bickerstaff in 1961 as a rare variant of migraine which frequently affects young women and girls and bears a strong relationship with menses. The condition is also known as basilar artery migraine, Bickerstaff’s migraine, and syncopal migraine. Migraine literature also groups basilar migraine in with hemiplegic migraine and ophthalmoplegic migraine under the heading of “complicated migraines.” Basilar migraine has since been shown to affect all age groups and both sexes with the usual migraine female predominance. The basilar migraine has been described by the Headache Classification Committee of the International Headache Society as “a migraine with aura symptoms clearly originating from the brainstem or from both occipital lobes.”
The aura phase of the migraine is due to transient brainstem and cerebellar ischemia, which can be
